There was one of those Pentax rebates which ended not long ago. I would wait a bit if possible to see if another one comes up.

That way, the K100D kit ended up costing $400.

I see some K100D kits going for less than $400 in froogle, but I don't know those sellers, and the ratings I can see tell me not to go there.

Not necessarily. There is a big difference between image quality and image composition. One is the result of a good camera, the other is the result of a good photographer. They're not one and the same.

If your just getting your feet wet in photography you'll be hard pressed to get a good DSLR setup for $500 and definitely not new. How about a nice Canon G9 that can go either manual or full auto? Decent MP's, zoom and RAW capabilities.
