It doesnt matter who said what really ;) the X5680/X5690 had a surge in pricepoint since half a year to about 175-200%. I'm glad I could find a X5680 in june for €125,-/$140.- gheghe.

I think I would go with a X5677 if I had to choose now. But again, it totally depends on your use, if gaming is one of the uses then a X5677 would be a good option :)

h9826790, I understand now. I was misinformed before. By the way, does the 5,1 dual cpu tray have the lids for the cpus? Is that the difference between the 4,1 and 5,1 dual cpu tray?

barry.pearson, I am surprised there was confusion. haha I interpreted it the way you explained it above.

Ok, fired the eBay trigger on 2x x5677 CPUs at $85 each. If in the future I need 12 cores at 3.46ghz vs the 8 that the x5677 gives them I can do that down the road. The biggest difference for me at the moment will be the bump in clock speed.

Also, cutting off a lid on a $85 chip will give me practice for the more expensive ones later.

If I ever upgrade, I will probably get those same processors. Great buy donut!

Yes, the 5,1 2010 and 2012 Dual CPU Trays uses CPUs with lids while the 4,1 Dual CPU Trays uses De-lidded CPUs. For 4,1 CPU upgrades, best to you De-lidded for a straightforward upgrade. Here is a video courtesy from DNComputers on how to upgrade 2009 4,1 Dual CPU Mac Pro.

Welcome Beccas. On your thread topic inquiry, I am still using both a 4,1 dual CPU and a 5,1 dual CPU cMac Pros. The 4,1 Nehalem Mac Pro is just as fast as the 5,1 Westmere Mac Pro from my experience. How the software responds to hardware is also a factor and will also depends on your usage and type of tasks. Here is a Photoshop Blur test using various CPUs. The test was done on various machines, Mac and Windows OS. Though this is only one type of test, on listing no. 12, there is an 8 core Nehalem, 2.93Ghz on Snow Leopard 10.6, which is still adequate for today's tasks.

And what about a bit of gaming? Do you do any of that on either computer? If so, what has your experience been like?

Sorry I could not comment as I don't play games. Due to my workload I usually don't have available extra hours for games.

Hi everyone.

So I ended buying the Mac Pro. It does not have the wifi card installed. What is needed for airdrop to work (between macs only). Do I need to buy the more expensive bluetooth 4.0 card with wifi and bluetooth or can I just install the older wifi card (up to N band) and leave the existing bluetooth card inside? Please let me know. I want to make the purchase soon.

For AirDrop, between Macs only, you need an Airport Extreme Card (standard "N" is fine), and OS X Lion or newer. You do not need BT4 or AC (these are required for Mac/iOS transfers).

If you have a wired Ethernet network, you don't need Wi-Fi at all, just use File Sharing. Or if you really want to use AirDrop on a wired network, you can enable it at the command line.

There are many models of AirPort Extreme Card and most of them will work, but I don't know which one is the newest or "correct" one.

These would probably work, but the "Draft N" description makes it sound like an older model to me. I just don't know about these things.

Yeah, I thought so too. I will look into getting the right card. Thanks again.
