I'd be interested on hearing how well this will play (mac version) on either of these (preferrably the mini as it has steam and Civ4 on):

MBP3,1 (Nov'07) 2.4GHz C2D, 4GB DD2, 8600M GT 256MB, SSD at 1650x1050
Mini3,1 (Jan'10) 2.66GHz C2D, 4GB DDR3, 9400M, 5400rpm at 1920x1080

Probably a little low spec but I'm used to playing games without AA.. however I'm expecting "It won't.". So this may have to wait a year until my MBP upgrade...

I run it on a 2.53 c2d 4GB ram in boot camp xp sp3.

I'm on turn 500 (I think!) around 1100AD in a huge map, marathon speed. I'm about to build my first caravel to cross the ocean. The continent started out with around 6 civs and about 9 city states.

The game is really punishing the system - most details low (well it looks bad compared to high - I'll double check settings) - lots of tiles greyed out and moving across the map is lagged for sure.

But - its fun - great game - at least I enjoy it very much. However I'm looking into a 2.8 QC 27" Imac with the 5750. Trying to determine how that performs late game (trying to figure out in my mind if an iMac + iPad replaces an MBP - i really would like some vesa mount on an articulated arm that I can swing out in front of me while I'm on the couch - but I digress....)

What size of game? Have you played full through yet?

I've around 400 turns right now on a marathon game. The map size is med, defaults for everything else.

I have played full through on a Small map size. With the settings at a okay level for a 2006 laptop, it plays well and fps are in the high 20s.

I think Vista's slowing it down a little bit cause it has a random lag every so often then it goes away.

dayum! I'll have to double check my settings. that's awesome - so super duper smooth - any issues????

It'll only run under DX9 and for some reason, I cannot skip the loading video. I'm not sure if that's a bug with the game or just the computer's too slow. However, changing the configuration setting to not show any intro video fixed that.

Thanks. I kind of got a feeling that it might be that I'm not running Snow Leopard on it. I'm looking into upgrading the system very soon, but it'll be great if you can figure out why it's not running.

yeah.. it might be 10.5 drivers just aren't up to snuff...

I tried on my 10.5.8 machine with a Geforce 9600GT, and I tried tons of stuff to get it to work... but i cannot. It launches fine, but it crashes when starting a game. My machine I play on is running 10.6.4 with a geforce 320m, and it runs fine.

How To Install Civ5 On An Imac

I've been unable to install the game so far. I have an Intel-based Imac (the newest) with Windows 7 on it. Once the installation of Civ5 is done (whatever direct x version I use), the game does not respond, and then yes, and then no, and it looks like a forever-loading piece of .... I downloaded every possible updates I was missing (my Windows 7 is cracked I guess) and except freezing my keyboard and mouse, it seems Microsoft didn't help me into getting this game to work. I'm very disappointed and I want to play my favorite game. Anyone can help me before I return this masterpiece to the store??

Cracked or not doesn't matter. The game takes a while to load. Skipping the intro video seems to help.

How To Play Civilization 5 On iMac (windows 7)

Here is the final solution to play this great game on MAC after Windows 7 is already installed (using Boot Camp). Other versions of Windows are untested.

You cannot play the game if you don't install the drivers for Windows 7 that Apple provides you here (http://support.apple.com/kb/dl995). If you were like me and the game wouldn't start and looked like a forever-loading piece of ...., your anger at CIV5-PC exclusivity is now over.

So here it is. Reinstall Windows 7 with the drivers and the game should work. Make sure you follow the instructions Apple give you to install the drivers (these have to be installed at the same time as Windows and cannot be installed later!). Please read the readme file about the drivers when you'll download them. You will need a USB flash drive to store the drivers before the installation of Windows 7 is completed. Once the installation of Windows 7 is done with the drivers Apple gave you, the game works. Nothing more to do. Hope this helps and enjoy this masterpiece.

Hi, I'm very interested in being able to tweak my game, and yes, at times, cheat.

So I've done some online research on various forums and my question is if anyone has managed to edit their game in-game with what is already out there. First, I want to add that I have managed to get the game to work using the port discussed earlier by upgrading to Snow Leopard, but I haven't tried playing under Windows (boot camp or parallels), so I have another question - would it be possible to do this inside wineskin? Maybe this question should be asked elsewhere (porting forums) but I thought maybe some of you would know the answer.

Anyway, there is a debug panel in the game that can be turned on, but no one has been able to do much with it according to what I've read online- seems like it was mostly disactivated when the game released. I can build roads and farms, but that's about it. You can add units, but they just sit there. If anyone has been able to do more, please let me know.

The other option I've seen is something about a Fire Tuner, which is a download from Steam apparently - from something called Civ V STK? Does anyone know if this is something I could get on Mac and if it will work? I didn't get the game from Steam - I don't know what that is...

Oh, and there is a third option - a trainer discussed here http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=384409&fire+tuner - have any of you guys used this?

Thanks for your help.

Hi -

I've encountered the following problem running the port - the game has stopped saving. I was on turn 135 last night and I managed to play for maybe 30 more turns, but the autosave stopped working, as I discovered to my horror when I tried to play again today. Also, before going to war with a city state I proactively saved the game (in case it ended up being a disaster) and neither that game or the post war saved game shows up.

Has anyone encountered this?

Civ V Runs fine Under Bootcamp

You can see my setup in my signature.

The game ran "ok" using Parallels 6, but I had to keep the features turned down and it was slow.

Now that I switched to Bootcamp, I have almost everything turned all the way up and running it in 2560x1440 w/ the ATI Radeon HD 4850 video card. It looks and plays great w/o crashes. I wish I could get the video card updated, but no biggie.

strange... your not saving with any weird characters in the save name? Have you tried auto saves or quick saves?

I've played games well over 200 turns with no problems with saves.

Does your Civ5 folder in your home Documents/My Games folder still exist? did its permissions get changed somehow that you cannot write to it anymore or something? its where your saved games are.

Ha! I wish my brain was working better than it is - this way I could have made the connoection, Doh. In trying to fix my other problem (the one you know about, and that's getting worse, from that other forum) I DID go and fix permissions (whatever that means). I wonder why this would affect anything....

I also googled the matter, and found that this is a bug complained about by many PC peoples, and the stated solution was to go to the config file and actually write out the path to the saved games folder where indicsted. I did this to the best of my knowledge, but wasn't sure how to write a file path for macs, or how far back I needed to go. In any case I wrote all the way from the name of my hard drive to user name, etc., using "/". Haven't checkd yet if it worked.

***Update***

Ok, so I thught I fixed the problem because the game proceeded to save again for like a day. I played yesterday for several hours (many, many turns) and then I couldn't get it to save. I was able to open the last game it saved, which wasn't the last game I saved - that one disappeared - when I began playing, but then when I'd go to the main menu to either save or load a game, there were no games listed at all, not even autosaves. So I played for several hours unable to save. Guided by the PC forum I found regarding a bug like this, I did go into the config file and added:

Chicky/Users/monicasmith/Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/Saves

at the

; Save Path - relative to working (Civ5) folder
FileName =

line, and I thought this worked....but not so much. So, my question is, is this the right way to write out the file path? Chicky being the name of my hard drive, and the rest is pretty self-explanatory. If so, is anyone encounterng problems like this one?

Yea, I also have encountered the same problem here, & haven't tested further whether this'll solve the problem.
Moniquinin, how did ur test go?
I find that ur directory just missed one slash.

it should be:

; Save Path - relative to working (Civ5) folder
FileName = /Chicky/Users/monicasmith/Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/Saves/

Path Notations on Mac always begins with "/" for path directory.

Where else on Win, it begins with drive letter. For example C:\Users\monicasmith\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\Saves\

Hope this helps, let me know whether this will correct ur problem?

Hey guys,

Ive encountered the same problem as Moniquinin - im running a civ5 port, and just around 200 turns on one of my games it stops letting me save. Ive checked the save folder in my games, its all fine. for some reason restarting the game a few times will wake it up again (that is, the load and save screens are populated by my old saves and allow me to save again), it seems to be random. any suggestions?

I'm not happy!

Civ V looks to be exciting and visually better than IV with new gaming features, better finance, etc.

BUT, on last years iMac dual core 21", the whole game load runs painfully slow.

My guess is that with Steam running in the background, checking the 'Net continuously, even in Single Player mode (?) ... I'll experiment with lower rez, etc. BUT that will defeat any visual gains over IV.

Anyone got alt. config suggestions besides switching to WinPC / bootcamp, et al?

Also, anyone know a shortcut to the actual game load ... bypassing the full length intro would go a long way toward making this more appealing ... banging escape / return / space bar repeatedly just does not make that old man shut up

(BTW: watch out for "quick save" = mouse/keyboard hangup after restart from "quick save".)
