After I restored my Lion, I went to the Microsoft Office website and re-downloaded the Office suite. You will need the information emailed to you when you bought it (order number, login info). Takes time and, of course, you have to re-do the settings. But it works.

I deleted the email in December...can you get the info from Office itself. Like product info or such.

Honestly, I don't know. You might get it by calling Microsoft's customer service or the App Store (depending in where you purchased it) where you could provide enough information that they could trace your purchase.
However, it's a VERY good idea to print out ALL receipts for app purchases and save them in a folder or something. If you get it from the app store, it's easier, but sometimes the downloads are more complex. It's saved me numerous times and, at the cost of these apps, you can't be too careful. Good luck.

I actually got back the email with the receipt and everything. So Im good. What Im gonna do is safe the DMG file of Office 2011 in a Disk with a text file with the product for safe keeping. Cause if Apple keeps up with a new OS X release every year, I might need it next summer.

I'm going to do a clean install. I keep hearing that it's not really necessary, but the habits acquired during years of exposure to Windows are difficult to get rid of ;-)

Good times and memories. I used to reinstall Windows 2000 every 4 months.

It's really not necessary to do a clean install. Apple has this down.

I agree, and haven't performed a clean install in years. And even then, it probably wasn't necessary...just did it to do it. Kind of like waxing your car every weekend...not really necessary, but makes you feel better.

My computers have all run fast and clean with upgraded systems.

on my 2012 Air, I just upgraded since I've only had it about a week and everything on it was already backed up. The upgrade worked perfectly, just as I expected it would. My Hackintosh, on the other hand, has been having some issues with Bluetooth and Power Management, so I'll be backing up everything manually (no TM since I worry it may restore things I don't want or need) and do a clean install once MultiBeast for ML hits; I'll be doing the upgrade on my Hackintosh Server though, since its well backed up and the install is new and pristine enough for nothing funny to be going on.

1) Download ML from the MAS to your computer
2) Create a bootable ML installer on a USB drive
3) Perform a Time Machine backup
4) Boot to the ML installer on the USB drive
5) Erase your HD using Disk Utilities
6) Install ML

This is what I plan on doing.

Chimera is already ML compatible, I'm fairly certain in most cases you'll be perfectly fine taking note of which kexts are custom on your hack and putting them on the ML install.

I got about halfway into making the installer the decided to wait. There's something to be said for a simple install :)

This might sound like a dumb question, but how do I go about getting iLife again after doing a clean install? My MBPR came with iLife/Lion preinstalled, so if I do a clean install of ML, I would have to format first. And I'm pretty sure ML from app store won't have iLife preinstalled (or will it?) since the gold master I'm using right now doesn't have it.

not doubting this, just confused. I thought I had read somewhere that using time machine would negate it being a clean install. Don't really know why, just thought I saw that somewhere.

Do the steps suggested and then manually import the data. If there was an issue in the previous time machine backup it will be carried over and will render your clean install a waste of time. Those are the steps to do a clean install.
This is a *better* way to create the USB stick. It installs faster than just copying the DMG over.

What negates a clean install is migrating all the Time Machine data once the clean install has been done. You always want to do a Time Machine backup just before you do a clean install. If I need to restore a user account I just manually drag over individual items from the Time Machine backup, I never migrate the entrie Time Machine backup.

for what it's worth, i backed up and then upgraded.

It works fine, but my MBP shipped with lion originally.

If i see any issues i'll blow it away and clean install, but so far so good.

Agreed - that's what I plan on doing and manually backing up from Time Machine.

Once you have manually restored from your Time Machine drive, is it possible to continue backing to to Time Machine and retaining the history or do you need to start a new backup?

Always prefer a clean install myself. If anything goes wrong, I know it's not something left behind by the previous OS.

I think since Lion that is possible. It will ask do you want to inherit your backup drive (something along those lines). All previous backups will be retained.

a clean install from a bootable jump drive made all the difference with lion in my case. It was really buggy with an initial upgrade on top of SL.

hopefully its the same or similar process with ML
