After all that just thought screw it and did a clean install. Manually moved things back into place. Seems very smooth :)

I am doing upgrades all the years, since I switched to mac, from the 'tiger' osx age.
I always wanted to do a clean install, but never had the time to do it.
So, just upgrading, with no problems.
Can I do upgrading all the years to come? Is it a good practice?
Not only I am upgrading since 'tiger', I am also changed to a new mbp, so we talk about upgrading osx and upgrading to new mac!
No problems.

But I wonder if I could see something better in performance if I ever managed to do a clean install.

The most valuable asset for me, is all the customization and setting(system preferences, application settings, etc) I made.

I wonder...

When I upgrade my hard drive sometime later this year, I will then be doing a clean install. So I figure I might as well upgrade since I'm going to do a clean anyway with the new hard drive.

After I did the upgrade, I noticed that the operating system in opening and closing applications not to mention safari was a little laggy. So I did a clean install a few hours later, and immediately noticed things beginning to speed up. So I believe that doing a clean install does help, at least in my case it did.

Recently made a clean install on my rMBP that is 3 days old, although it has not made a enormous difference, it has surely made the so called "GUI lag" more tolerable :)

So simply put: if you find your user experience not as snappy as expected, consider doing a clean install!

Just upgraded from SL -> ML and it took 40 min, and after first restart, icloud is syncing, everything is faster, and safari has working extensions....excellent.

Everything works and is functioning, I'd even say slightly faster, but that is just me justifying the 20 dollar purchase lol.

But i love being able to type up lists and reminders from my laptop at home/work, and then open my phone and have them there, I know I am late to the party, but people told me to skip Lion and I listened, this seems polished.

is there any technical reason why a clean install would make a difference? or is everyone just eyeballing it and getting this in their heads

I would like to do a clean install of ML 10.8 but not sure how I keep my emails and bookmarks. The rest is OK. I have a current CarbonCopy on one external HDD and a Time Machine copy on another external HDD.

Can some one tell me please how I can keep all my existing emails and bookmarks please.

Thanks heaps

No, that wouldn't be a true fresh/clean install. Whatever unnecessary/buggy/glitchy/etc. files you had before will be brought back over via Time Machine.

A fresh install is when you back up only your files (music, documents, pictures, etc. -- not the settings files), then replace them manually after the install.
Not true. Sure a TM restore you can have prefs put back but that is all they are, prefs. A clean install insures that there are no remnants of the old OS anywhere on the drive.

I prefer a true clean install.

The reason I don't mind the extra time & effort is because I'm always seeking to streamline my work flow, increase speed and optimize my Mac.

Never at a loss for ideas & things I want to change or improve, a clean install provides me with the ideal opportunity to do it.

Once it's done, I have a good sense of accomplishment and a fresh new software configuration.

It just gets better :)
