Clicktoflash gone? Alternative?

I had clicktoflash extension installed on the MBA that i just sold... and it was working fine. It prevented flash from loading... but i could click a link on the middle of the window where the flash would have played, and allow it to load/play. Alternatively, i could right click there and choose to download the video file.
Now i am setting up an iMac i just bought, and i can't figure out how to get this set up again. Clicktoflash no longer appears in the Safari extensions. I've found and installed it from an external website, and no luck. I also tried the Clicktoplugin extension... and it's not behaving like i had setup either.
Weird, as i'm using the same OS and version of safari i had before... so should be doable.
Anyone know what i'm talking about, and how to set it up again?
 
You shouldn't have any problems if you download it directly from the developer's GitHub page—though it won't auto-update. Download it here.

I used to use it, but I've gone the route of simply uninstalling Flash completely. If a site still uses Flash, then I just live without whatever content it is.

Yea... i tried downloading it directly yesterday, and it didn't seem to be working. I just retried it again. But i noticed when i open a page in youtube that a a text message appears on a black backdrop very briefly, before it goes away and its just a black image. Ill attach here a screen shot. Before, on my MBA, there was a link that appeared there, which i could click to play the video. i could also right click to download the video. I cannot de either now.

But I'm curious... i don't currently even have flash installed (i just set up a clean install of El Capitan... so unless its installed by default, i didn't do it). Wonder if thats the difference. But from the second line of the that message that appeared, it seems like its HTML5 that its not handling....?

Did you change anything in the settings of Safari or ClickToFlash? Normally there should be no problem, if you just install the extension and leave the settings as they are. Is it happening to all YouTube videos?

Flash shouldn't be in El Capitan unless you install it or install Chrome.

You could also try ClickToPlugin from them same download source. I notice no difference with both of them. But I have no plugin installed.

HTML5 is the standard player on YouTube since about a year and is integrated in every current browser.

So if you just want to prevent Flash from loading and don't have Flash installed you don't need any Safari extension at all.

hmm... so yes, seems like i shouldn't need the extension. but that begs the question: how did i have it set up before on my MBA that it didn't auto play videos... and that i could click to play, or right click and download?
 
So i've got it working again...
1) find and install the clicktoflash extension for Safari (not available through Apple's extensions list, you have to download yourself)
2) open the settings, and click the Media Player tab
3) Initial Behavior: Preload
4) Instant Autoplay: unselect this

Then you get what you see in the image below: the video is loaded, and you can click where it says html5 if you wish to play. and now, if you right click that same spot, you have a menu option to download the video.

I'm trying to find a substitute for clicktoplugin since he isn't updating it anymore.
I mainly want to be able to download clips from youtube, etc

Hey, My ClickToFlash has suddenly turned black and I have no way of playing videos again like the screen shot you took. Any ideas? Which forum did you ask to have your problem solved? Thanks.
 
I was only using it for youtube to stop it loading

Going to move to Opera now as it has VPN built in
 
Damn, I use clicktofash to download videos from youtube and other places. Anything else that can be used for this?

I don't have a free solution for you—mostly because I found that all the free ones stop working with every update to the OS or the browser, or when Google updates something on YouTube.

I use Airy because it has always worked through any updates, it works flawlessly, and it allows me to only download the audio portion of a video if that's all I want. The link has a 30% off code for purchasing Airy.
 
I'll try it unless someone has a better option.
I'll wait until I update to sierra.
Too bad clicktoflash's developer stopped updating it, it was so easy to use and could download any html5 clip
 
The thing I loved most about clicktoflash is that you didn't have to copy and paste the url, you just right click on the video and download it
 
Seems like Safari 10 broke it. You can go back down to Safari 9 if you want to use it, but that requires reinstalling OS X. I don't now if I'm willing to do that.. LOL

it used to be so easy to use. Very bummed it'd broke. Sadly.... this is just one of the many steps backwards I'm experiencing with Apple.
 
I'm using clicktoplugin right now and it seems to be working.
I'd still rather use a program that will continue to be updated though

What Safari version are you on? I tried ClicktoPlugin and it doesn't work either.

I prefer ClickToPlugin. Are you using the latest version, 3.2.0? I could not get that one to work, either, on Sierra or El Capitan. Try 3.1.6. It works fine (for me). This is what I had on an older install before I upgraded everything. There is a link on the developer's site to download previous versions.
 
Do you really need Flash at all on your system? I deleted it and really don't miss it. If I do find a site that I just have to view that uses Flash, I just view it in Chrome.
 
Without flash, clicktoplugin doesn't work. I use it to download video clips. There are some other programs that do it but they charge for it and it isn't as easy as clicktoplugin.
I'm open to trying another program
