It's sort of obvious, but it was still wrong for the host to do that when Tim Cook has never publicly acknowledged his sexuality.

I don't think that's fair. Cook has never hidden the fact that he's gay, he just doesn't talk about it himself, and it's his right to not to do so. I'm pretty sure he's not offended by people knowing or talking about it, although he'll probably continue to refuse to talk about it, because he doesn't have to.

Cook isn't in the closet, so it's odd to talk about him being outed.

I can't wait until the world stops obsessing over gays. Why do we care if people are gay or not? Why do people have to come out? If Tim Cook wants to keep his private life private, that's his choice.

As a straight person, I don't care that he's gay. It doesn't bother me one bit, nor is it relevant to my purchasing decisions. However, to a gay youth, who is constantly being bullied, told by politicians, religious nuts and other bigots that make up almost half of this country that they're second class citizens not deserving of equal rights, and who might not feel that it will ever get any better, it's inspirational to see that a pro athlete or CEO is openly gay. It shows them that they can be something big when they grow up, and it might help them strive to be the next Tim Cook instead of just another gay teen suicide statistic.

Tim doesn't need to come out, you're right in that it's his private life and his choice to not publicly come out, but everyone knows he's gay and there's no point in trying to hide it, not talk about it, or pretend he's straight because it doesn't matter to anyone. It does matter to some, just not straight people.

Personally I've been very vocal in my support of Tim, and believe he's doing an exemplary job in the face of extreme pressure having stepped in after Steve's death.

Honestly, in line with other posters here, I thought that it was "common knowledge". I guess the entire world doesn't read MacRumors.

I am also sure that there are a bunch more CEOs who are gay. I guess the real question here is do journalists have the right to expect all those gay CEOs to talk about it openly? It is a tough question.

Common knowledge based on what? Not denying it? Has Cook ever been rumored to have a boyfriend or been spotted out with another male "friend"?

Tim Cook has never publicly said he was gay. Therefore he's not really out. As far as Aperture goes, I view this as Apple having some other big initiatives coming down the pike and Cook is shedding things he doesn't feel are important enough or Apple has the resources for.

And? Why should anyone care if he publicly states it or not?
Does Bill Gates hold a press conference to publicly state he is straight?

His marriage to Meldinda might be a tip off, there. Until we stop assuming people are straight, they will need to come out when they're not. It's as if the gay people want to maximize the chances of finding fulfilling relationships!

Who cares? Being black, white, green, purple , straight, gay, atheist, catholic, pagan, etc isn't an issue anymore. He's the CEO of one of the most influential companies on the planet. He could be the giant purple people eater for all anyone cares. It...DOESN'T...**********...MATTER ANYMORE!!!

Whoa... I draw the line at purple. Those people are messed up. The greens aren't much better...

Instagram has photos of Cook at the pride event today in San Francisco. I wonder if any other Apple executives will be there...

I guess the tech community and gay community knew about it, but apparently it's never been mentioned on mainstream media. Now everyone will know. I wonder how many bigots will come out of the woodwork to add Apple to their gay-friendly boycott list.

That's likely one reason why Cook has never come out publicly. The last thing Apple wants is for various groups to target them for protest. It's not just about sexual orientation either. It could be about anything. It doesn't matter what the topic is, corporations prefer to avoid conflict.

Personally, I care more about if he has a family or is around kids. We need someone like that to push multi-user kid friendly iPads, etc.

Executive, maybe not depending on their schedules. That said, I've heard for many years now that Apple employees tend to have a decent showing at such events (as private citizens, not representatives of Apple).

It could be hunting preferences, for example. It doesn't matter what the topic is, corporations like to avoid conflict.

Personally, I care more about if he has a family or is around kids. If he were, maybe we'd have had multi-user kid friendly iPads long ago.

Not sure about Federighi, but I know Ive, Schiller and Cue have kids. ;)

As far as corporations avoiding what could be considered controversial subjects I'd like to see a Cook be a little less political. A good example is Apple's most recent shareholders meeting where Cook got a question on only doing things where there is a clear return on investment. He got angry and told people who don't agree to get out of the stock. He easily could have explained why he believes the things Apple does are good for shareholders. I'm sure there are a lot of Apple customers (especially in the US) who don't share his political views. Getting too political could drive them away.

Haven't we gotten past sexuality as a criteria for judging people??? It's all about the content of a man's character, not some silly physical characteristic, or race, creed, religion, etc.

Surprised it hasn't been picked up by MR yet but the reports I've seen on the net this morning so far have Apple at Pride SF with about a 1000 staff behind the Apple banner.

Sorry Tim says it was 5000 staff, family and friends.

Apple is trying to establish itself outside the shadow of one man.
Maybe Tim Cook is trying to avoid making it about him.

Like others I really don't car if he asexual or anything lease in his private life. He does his job and helps bring Apple into the future is all I care about. I just hope his plans help bring the new Apple products.

I am just hoping he has Apple brings a new Mac Mini. :D
