Other Coming from 8 Plus. Xr or Xs Max?

Hi all,

I preordered a Xs Max yesterday, and the price just about killed me. I was reading a thread earlier today that said the Xr had the same viewable area as the Xs Max, which I didn't realize.

Coming from a phone with 401ppi, do you think going down to 326ppi would make a big difference?

I briefly considered the XR, but coming from the 401ppi in the 8+, I think I would have missed the extra sharpness and clarity. I also didn't want to wait two months and mess up my upgrade program, so I preordered the XS Max 256GB in Gold.

Have the feeling that once I go OLED, I won't want to go back. Happened with my TV, and I imagine it happening with my phone as well.

Normally I could see the difference when I was comparing between the iPhone 8 display and the 9 Plus display. Or 7 Plus vs 7. I would notice slight loss of detail when looking at Google maps images for example.

Honestly though if it were just the display compromise I wouldn’t think twice about it. It’s the difference in modems that I’m trying to figure out. They are different but I don’t know if they’re different in a way that would bother me. Currently I have an 8 Plus and I’m not happy with my call quality and signal retention on road trips.

I was hoping to get an improvement on that.

I don’t think it would be worth upgrading from the 8 Plus to the XR. Worse screen, no 3D touch, slightly better camera and and battery life. And unless you care about OLED, the XS Max isn’t worth it either.

Are you sure it’s not a carrier issue? Also there are 2 different modems in the 8 depending on if you have the GSM or CDMA model.

Ive got the Intel GSM version. I’ve had trouble going all the way back to iPhone 6S Plus at least. Possibly longer than that. Same as on my husband’s phones. I’m possibly spoiled by the performance of my Android phones.

I was going to go to the XR until I realized that through carrier subsidies and their new "leasing" program, I could pick up a Max for $230+. Otherwise I would have gone for the XR after my 8+. The OLED isn't super important to me, and the battery life on the XR will be amazing. Not to mention the colours. If I hadn't found out about the new lease program, I would be very happy with the XR.

No, the Max has a larger display area than XR. You're looking about 15.9 vs. 13.9 sq inches (inclusive of notch).

You'll be able to view the same amount of content on the XR compared to Max. The content will just be smaller.

401 vs 326 PPI is almost indistinguishable. Take a look at a friend's iPhone 6, 7 or 8 with 326 PPI for comparison.

I used 3D touch a lot when I first got my 7+ but forgot about it. It's very helpful for text messages, though.

But i didn't think this decision was about joy, i figured it was about spending your money appropriately.

If all you care about is the serotonin hit that you get from impulse purchasing thousand dollar devices sight-unseen, go buy both?

I decided to preorder the XS Max after seriously considering the XR. My main reasons for choosing the Max over the XR were:

1) Dual camera (I use 2X zoom a lot)
2) Lower PPI (I don’t think it’s a big deal, but it is a downgrade from the Plus)
3) OLED (I have observed the OLED screen on my friends’ X phones, it is a very good screen)

Also, I wanted to upgrade my storage (I actually preordered a 64G, cancelled that, and then preordered a 256G), which is one reason I upgraded at all. Last year, I wasn’t convinced I was going to use my 8+ for more than a year, so I didn’t buy the extra storage.

The big question is whether the Max is actually worth the extra $350 to $450 given the differences I described. In all honestly, it probably isn’t. The 8+ is still super capable today, and the XR will be super capable. Apple is increasingly charging much more of an Apple tax on these “premium” phones.

My girlfriends 6+ is driving her crazy. I’m thinking of getting the XR so I can give her my 8+.

I personally wouldn’t get the XS Max as I don’t feel it’s a big enough upgrade to be worth the $350 premium over the XR. I couldn’t care less about:

• 3D Touch
• 458 vs 326 PPI
• 2 camera lens vs 1 camera lens
• OLED vs LCD
• Stainless steel vs Aluminum band.

To me battery life is the most important aspect of a smartphone. The XR having 2 more hours of internet use than the XS Max (15 vs 13 hours) just seals the deal for me.

im sure ill get used to it, i got sick of the plus its just too big for me. I like something a little smaller with a good sized screen.

Went with the Max because it's essentially the same size as the 8 plus I have now. So everything was a bonus.

and yeah... while I was at the AT&T store I pulled up the keyboard on the X they had on demo right next to my 8 plus. Nope, not going back to a smaller keyboard.
My dad has a 6S, every time I have to change/fix something on his iPhone... the keyboard is the first thing I notice.

As i said, we have no idea how good your eyes are, how picky you are, etc.

They're both retina devices. GO LOOK AT THEM and evaluate with your own eyes? I haven't stated my opinion at all. I've merely stated that it is impossible for any of us to know, and give you an informed decision. The only way you can know is to evaluate them yourself.

But that means no pre-order.

You will find out that the "slightly bigger" screen is a diagonal measurement & font and images will actually look smaller on the XS (or X) than on a 8 Plus

Just go to this page, scroll down and select between the iPhones.
you can measure the difference between the screen Width of them all. The Max and 8 Plus are the exact same width. the X/XS is slimmer than the 8 Plus, it's why I did not like the X.. although it's between the normal 8 and 8 Plus screen width, it just made me feel I was using a much smaller iPhone.
