Think carefully about paying the extra for cellular. The cell radio failed on my iPad, and I learned I really did not need cellular. Today WiFi is available at many locations, and when it is not an iPhone works well as a hotspot.

This is the first time I've heard about failed cellular chip... as for hotspot, it's fine if you use it few times a year, but when traveling abroad or on-the-go, where I prefer not to use public WiFi, it's inconvenient and it kills the phone’s battery.

Agree. Plus, I want GPS.

I use the cellular connection a few times a month. I use T-Mobile’s cheap $10 5GB/5 month plan. Many times I would feel very limited without it for the limited number of times that I do use it. My phone plan throttles hotspot use (though of course I could get a different plan but everything else about the plan is perfect).

I have Apple Care+ to take care of any failures.

One day is all it lasted for me

Returning the Mini 7 this morning and I bought the nicest quality refurb Mini5 I could find

I find something about the Mini 7 uncomfortable .. I think the aspect ratio change is part of it maybe
It oddly feels more cramped than my Mini 5 to me -- I don't know

I also don't care for the in-hand feel and, yes, roast me all you want, I miss the side bezels when in landscape to have a place to comfortably grip and rest my hands/thumbs in particular while not obscuring the screen. Old habits die hard I guess.

I go with my gut on these things and it's just not worth a full boat upgrade price, to me, at this time

Will check out a future Mini some day again (assuming there *is* a new version again in 2-3 years)

I’m lost here.. what was you expecting?

If you didn’t upgrade to the Mini 6 when it was initially released… what were you hoping that would have been different with the Mini 7 (Apple Pencil modification aside… no internal external hardware changes were made)? I’m genuinely curious.

I've been on Mini 5 and my battery is toast so I had to do "something"

All the form factor changes and aspect ratio change with the Mini 6/7 were new to me -- Just didn't expect to dislike it as much as I did, instantly and all day yesterday. Despite testing in stores, sometimes you have to try in your normal usage patterns and with the Apps you use, etc

No stress - not looking to argue with folks - wonderful internal hardware speed with the new chip,
Just a preference of mine for now to stay on a Mini 5

👍

Not looking for an argument either, but I had a mini 5 for years before I got the mini 6. Kept it until I traded it in on the mini 7. To me the form factor seemed pretty much the same across all 3 devices. Like the previous poster, I'm genuinely curious as to what specific design elements you find so repulsive.

Not trying to convert you to my point of view, just trying to understand what you're saying--especially since I no longer have my mini 5 to compare its aspect ratio (and overall form factor) with that of my mini 6 and mini 7.

Maybe my inability to understand is dt the fact that I have very small hands, so the loss of bezel is not an issue for me? Any chance you can further clarify? In particular, I wasn't aware of a significant difference in aspect ratio but it's been 3+ years since I switched to the mini 6 as my primary mini. Please help me here... TIA

Nobody was asking you to DEFEND your post. I, at least, was genuinely interested in your experience.

If all I wanted to do was disagree with you, why would I spend the amount of time I spent thinking about the specifics of your post and trying to compare your experience with mine? You should be pleased that people are taking your post seriously rather than feeling like we are attacking you for your viewpoint. That was never my intention--and I said so several times in my post.

with folio and just the raw glass and sides, its easy for me to accidentally touch the display by holding it

but something like ESR TPU case (With kick stand) or anything with a lip, it's much easier to avoid this.

but ymmv on screen real estate aspect since it is a different aspect ratio than iPad mini 5 and predecessors.

What’s the difference in aspect ratio? I’ve forgotten the details and no longer have my mini 5 to compare with the mini 6 and mini 7 I currently have

I don’t mind the aspect ratio, but what I don’t like on the 6/7 is the scaling of home screen widgets. They’re way too small and sometimes difficult to read. They’re even smaller than on an iPhone. Definitely not a deal breaker but it is odd looking when you switch to it after using other devices. Not sure if this is an issue on older iPad minis.

Thanks. That helps me visualize the difference in a way I could not have done without still having my mini 5 to use for A:B comparison.

My hangup had been with the use of the term "aspect ratio." From this figure, it would appear that neither device is truly a 16:9 aspect ratio. It turns out that googling reveals that the mini 5 has an aspect ratio of 4:3. whereas the mini 6's aspect ratio is 4.6:3. But that still is relatively meaningless to me, without having the visual comparison

What this figure (and your comment) illustrates, however, is that it isn't just the aspect ratio of the (useable portion) of the screen that's the issue for some folks but also the height of the device and the width of the bezels.

Once again, thanks for taking the time to create this visual comparison and post it. It's finally clear to me.

4:3 of mini speaks a lot to me. Basically we are looking at shrinked down version of regular normal ipads (7-8-9-10 gen or ipad air). Those are clunky with 9.7 inch displays, so i could see the appeal of having the right proportioned mini version.
