I just got a replacement adapter sent out to me today from Apple because my old one crapped out. Do you think I'll get one of these replacements?

Considering they were just announced today...I'm gonna say probably not.

Compact MacBook Pro Power Adapter

For those yearning for Mac related news, per Engadget, Apple appears to have redesigned their 85W MagSafe Power Adapter for the MacBook Pro. The new design is smaller and similar to the current 60W MagSafe for the MacBook.

The adapter is listed with a 3-4 week ship time.

the new one looks far smaller...is it smaller than the mb power adapter or exactly the same size?

So it says it's only compatible with MBP. Wouldn't it also be compatible with MB like the previous MBP charger. It should be able to only take the wattage it needs.

Well, pretty cool, too bad I already have the big brick.

I find this hard to get excited about, and certainly won't be dropping $85 to reduce the bulk of my power adapter.

I wasn't aware this was possible. So it won't do any harm to the MB's? And can you use the MB's adaptor for the MBP?

No, it won't damage the MB, using the MB adapter on the MBP will work as well but it won't charge as well as using it. (maybe a little but not nearly as much as the proper charger)

You can use the higher powered 85W adapter with any computer that uses a lower wattage and the same connector (i.e. the 60W MagSafe for the MacBook) but not the other way around (it can cause the battery to lose its charge even if the lid is closed). Not that it will charge a MacBook faster or that its recommended by Apple but its helpful to know especially if you work in a situation with a mix of MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

i wash my car, and it rains. i buy a macbook pro, and the adapters get updated. oh well, what can i do? i think it's great apple updated the adapters; having a mobile computer means having lightweight accessories, and it's good to see that apple gets this. my current adapter suits me fine, so no new adapter for me.

Now that's the hardware update we all wanted

So after all this waiting, we finally get the ultimate hardware update, woohoo Apple, I guess the computers do still matter!

**please insert sarcasm where appropriate**

*yawn* I kinda liked the look of the bigger brick. Made the MBP look like it was more powerful than my Macbook and Powerbook.

Interesting! Just what kind of car are we talking about? :p

I really wish Apple would license the MagSafe technology to third party manufacturers.
Apple really have a patent on this 'technology'? I have various other consumer goods that have had magnetic power leads for donkey's. Surely you can't patent a common feature of one product on another.

A la mods:

While I'm in query mood...one thing that's occurred to me many times and now I'll finally ask: When someone posts some news they've picked up why does Admin post the same news lower down the page (or the next page even)? If you have to repeat it why not move it to the first post? It's like deja vu. :)

Bastards, I just spent 3K on an MBP, and I get the big brick! Not fair. Throws a tantrum... Kidding...

Though, my current adapter has this weird issue where the green light sometimes disappears. If I take it out, and put it back in, it lights up again. Anyone else see this?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MagSafe

"Apple has not licensed third-party products using MagSafe, however many manufacturers have devised a workaround: their MagSafe items use the actual connector from Apple's AC adapter, grafted on to their own product. Since this uses an actual Apple product, purchased legally, no licensing agreements are violated."
