Hello,

I just discovered this site and forum and decided to register. After two days reading opinions of users in my same situation, I am one more who can't downgrade from iOS 17.1 beta (beta 2 in my case) to the stable 17.0.X

I thought of making a compilation of users in this situation by opening a post in which we will inform about news. In my case I have a 256gb iPhone 15 Pro Max, but I don't know if it affects other models.

PS: If someone goes into recovery loop when trying to restore a stable, simply restore the beta version, either by iTunes, or 3uTools and then you can recover the terminal.

Same phone as you running iOS 17.1 beta 2. Still cannot restore.
Let's see if someone else is encouraged to post that also suffers this problem... so if Apple releases an update that fixes it, we can centralize the information here and not be scattered throughout the forums.

I would have expected to be able to roll back a iPhone 15 from 17.1 beta to 17.0.3.

What have you done to try to roll back?

You haven’t mentioned DFU mode which I used to roll back successfully a few months ago.

I have used the following methods

iTunes with recover mode, downloading the firmware from the program itself. It does not work with different cables or giving it to restore or update, always restarts the system by turning on the iPhone and gives error 4016. Also with iTunes with iPhone in DFU and using the ISPW file of 1.7.0.2 and 1.7.0.3. In this case the device restarts and stays in DFU loop and gives error 4013.

I have also tried with 3uTools and it stays at 18% in both ISPW.

However I tried to install the ISPW From 17.1 Beta 2 (the one I have) and both in ITunes and 3uTools works correctly, both if the system is OK and to recover the device from the DFU loop.

This I tell you have already gone through the same process other fellow forum members and the result is the same; we can not return to something that is less than 17.1

17.0.2 and higher is still being signed by Apple, so it seems there is something about iPhone 15s stopping the rollback. May be fixed an a future beta?

What is reason for wanting to rollback?

Try iMazing. It can optionally clear everything from the phone (more than Finder or iTunes) and then starts from a clean slate. I used it to get back to 17.0.

I'll have to kindly ask you to send me a DM explaining how to do that, cause I tried iMazing and couldn't make it work.

Curious: has anyone tried to downgrade to 17.1 beta 1 and THEN downgrade to 17.0.3? Maybe that is possible.

Currently running the new 17.1 B3 released today and I still can not downgrade using Restore/DFU mode to 17.0.2 or 17.0.3. But Beta 3 is an A ending build so I suppose next week the RC will be released so I guess I don't care about downgrading anymore.

17.1 B1 down to 17.0.2 = Fail
17.1 B2 down to 17.0.2 = Fail
17.1 B2 down to 17.0.3 = Fail
17.1 B3 down to 17.0.3 = Fail

I did read on another forums here that someone as able to successfully downgrade to 17.0.3 but it only worked on macOS 13.6. They couldn't get it to work on macOS 14 Sonoma.

I'm in restore mode then.

Ok we can work with that. So for dfu mode plug into your computer with your phone powered on. You’re gonna press volume up volume down then hold the side button. Don’t let go of the side button however when the screen turns black keep holding side button and hold the volume down button count to 5 and release side button while holding volume down until your Mac pops up saying it’s discovered a phone in recovery mode. If you see the apple logo pop up the timing was off and it didn’t work. Don’t sweat it just try again. Once successfully in dfu mode is when you hold option and click restore and select the ipsw file for 17.0.3

If you successfully get into dfu mode and receive error 1669 like I did leave your phone plugged in and press volume up volume down and hold side button till apple logo appears. Stay plugged in and check your Mac for a popup hiding behind finder stating you need to download something to communicate with iPhone. Let it download whatever it is and try the process again. That’s what made it go through for me
