In addition to the links posted, I recommend you take a look at the Missing Manual series by David Pogue.
Does that book have information about cut and paste in Finder that isn't found in the links posted? Or is this just a commercial break? :D

... except you can't cut and paste files in Finder.

Uh, yes you can. That's one of the advertised features in Lion. It's actually done better than in Windows.
You right-click (or 2-finger tap) on the file to bring up the contextual menu. Choose COPY xxx file. Go to the area in the Finder that you want to place the file. Right-click again and choose PASTE ITEM or if you hold down the OPTION key choose "Move File Here". You can choose to either Paste it or Move it entirely all in one sequence. You don't have that option in Windows. I thought of all people you'd be the one to know. :)

I'm not running Lion.

I think you're missing the point GGJ, the OP said he's new to Mac and he's running Lion. I gave him features that work in Lion. If you're not running Lion you're doing the thread a disservice by disputing a feature that I'm saying it has. Not trying to beat you up because I actually support a lot of your posts but if you're unaware you should verify rather than say someone's wrong. :)

I think you're missing the point. If you read the rest of the thread, you'll see that I welcomed correction and stated the corrected information, once it was brought to my attention.

Why the attitude? The OP asked for general advice as an OS X newbie, and I recommended a book which I bought when I first started using a Mac.

I am not in any way affiliated with O'Reilly Media or Pogue, other than I think his Missing Manual series for OS X is an excellent resource.

No attitude at all. I guess you missed this:

I didn't say you were.

I agree. It's been recommended many times in this forum.
