Are the screws for the 2nd HDD really necessary ? i dont even see from the pictures were you screw them in, im ordering my mac mini in a couple of days since i already got the cable.

also , wich hdd do you think is better to put into it ? Seagates momentus 750 Gb or a scorpion blue 1tb ?
I've been wondering about the screws too. Looking at parts for the server bracket it looks like the drive would normally screw into it. Do you basically just plop it into place without securing it to anything?

Seing as the 2011 Mac Mini supports SATA III, any of you guys who upgraded to SATA III SSD's, are you getting the drive's full speed using the stock cable that came with the Mac Mini ?
OWC has tested their SATA III SSDs with the new Minis and they work fine with the stock cable. See http://blog.macsales.com/11258-by-the-numbers-what-can-an-owc-6g-ssd-do-for-your-2011-mac-mini

I would expect other SSD brands would work fine as well.

If you were adding a 2nd drive to a single disk Mini, I guess you'd need to check that the additional cable you get supports SATA III.

Okay, you are crazy. It would be cheaper to just get the external DVD from Apple. How often do you need DVDs anyway? I think I'm the only one on the planet that loves that they dropped those stupid things. The day won't come soon enough when I never have to see another CD/DVD!

Not at all, this is the best what could happen to the new MM.

The possibility to get second HDD to the new MM so easy is worth much more than an internal DVD drive, especially when you can get an external for a few bucks :D

Did the first stage of my upgrade last night - now have 8GB RAM and a 120GB Corsair Series 3 SATA-III SSD fitted. Now, she flies!

Hardest part was getting the drive to sit in the mounting holes properly.

Will finish the upgrade when the 2nd drive cable arrives from VIS by reinstalling the stock drive in the spare slot.

For the cable needed for a second hard drive (Part # 922-9560), is it a SATA III cable? I plan on getting a SATA III SSD to put in mine.

I order my 922-9560 from partsquad on Monday, and they said they had them in stock on their website. Today (Friday), I got an email that the order has been canceled because the part is out of stock. I was really hoping to get my second HDD in the computer over the weekend.

I have a shiny new SSD sitting on my desk awaiting the cable I ordered 07/30. The status remains in "processing" purgatory... but at least I haven't been sent a cancelation email (yet). Silver lining??

I was just about to place an order with them and then saw the outrageous shipping prices which gave me pause. FWIW I called We Love Macs and they also have backorder, but said they are expecting a large shipment early next week and should have more than enough to handle the current backorder.

I was thnking of adding one of these two into my mini:

1. a !TB toshiba -> http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-MK105...5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1312551936&sr=1-5

or

2. 500GB Seagate hybrid -> http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Momen...1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1312552651&sr=1-1

Anyone have experience with either?

-Rippey

don't expect to much from the Seagate, if you want to go conventional, go for this: http://www.hardmac.com/news/2011/08/01/new-2-5-1-tb-western-digital-hd-it-is-a-beast anyway I would go with SATA 3 SSD + 1TB 5K RPM data HDD

Mac Parts Online shipped my bottom hard drive flex cable today. I should have it by Tuesday. They must have gotten there large order in.

I would bet some others that ordered them have likely shipped too.

By the way the web site is showing they are in stock now too, I just looked. The cable can be found here.

The shipping is a little tough, but compared to some other web site, the price for the part is about $10 to $15 cheaper, so I'll take it. Though it does appear that they raised the price from $32 to $39 now.

kinda sleazy to jack the price after getting lots of orders on a slow selling item plus the $14 shipping. you know they got a better price on the new bigger batch, even if not, it's jacking. I'm not in a rush for it so I'll wait and see who else starts selling these.

Had you priced them anywhere else? I did when Mac Parts was out of stock and most other vendors where charging anywhere from $45 to $50. You are making a lot of assumptions with absolutely no evidence to support it. They are still below price compared to the 3 other sites that had them. If you read through some other threads most of them only had 2 or 3 in stock either and show out of stock now, even some reporting their order was canceled. Mac Parts gave me that option (to cancel), but I told them no, I'd wait and now my cable is on the way. I paid the $32.40 price that I ordered it at and didn't change prices on me. They also didn't cancel any ones order without being instructed to do so. What is sleazy is folks starting threads about companies because they didn't get an immediate email reply or because they ran out of stock for an item they rarely sold to begin with.

Two sides to the pricing thing:

1. Looked up some history. Back in June AppleComponents.com had the bottom cable listed for $19 and showed 5 in stock.

2. Supply and demand.

my cable just shipped from macpartsonline...will be here by the 9th. I have my new WD 1TB drive here waiting to install to give me 2TB total. they are both 5400 rpm drives but they are not giving me too much issues. I work mainly from my MBA anyway and stream a ton of apple tv from the mini to my tv's....

i hope to just one day get the promise thunderbolt system where i don't have to worry about speed as much and load with some really fast drives at a reasonable price...

2. Supply and demand.

Absolutely the folks at Mac Parts said they generally sold no more than 2 a month of this cable and some months none.

But Supply and Demand is the name of the game for any commodity these days.

That stock 5400 RPM drive in the Mac Mini 2011 isn't a slouch at all. Not everyone needs there apps to pop up within a millisecond. Having that much space is more important in many cases.

Glad your cable shipped, yours and mine are due on the same date. :)

so gigaguy was right with his consideration... If you have time just wait, the price will go down for sure ... Supply and Demand ... :D

He might be waiting a long time if not forever for them to drop in price now. Nonetheless, I got mine at the lower price cause I ordered sooner rather than later. Sometimes the early bird really does get the worm. LOL I guess if a few bucks for someone is worth the wait, it would be worth considering, but not for me. If one waits long enough maybe a third party like OWC will make a cable for less. Then knowing Apple once they realize what folks are doing with these cables may double the price or quit making them all together, it's a crap shoot!

I think you missed the point here, but that's ok, nevertheless enjoy it all !

BTW apple is for sure not the manufacturer of this piece of cable, so their price decisions are relevant only for their trading partners.

OH I am not foolish enough to believe that Apple manufactures these cables, but certainly like everything else they outsource them. These cables according to Mac Part are ordered directly from Apple, so rather vendors can order these straight from the source is anyones guess.

Okay enough of that, just tracked my cable and it is now actually set to arrive on Monday, so I am looking forward to opening this bad boy up again and getting my second hard drive installed. I will be installing a Seagate 7200 RPM 750GB drive. It will be nice to actually have iTunes running on a native drive rather than an external drive again.

Does that adding-a-second-hdd-dilemma also apply to the MM server version. In other words, is there a preinstalled second SATA-connector, when you bought it only with one SSD?

Ok looking through these posts I am still not positive but here's my idea, I have 2 new Crucial C300 SSD I plan on doing Raid 0. So I was thinking I have a full backup via time machine, so I was thinking of installing the drives, then booting with the command R method then restore from time machine, can I set up raid 0 during that install method.

No because it comes with 2 hard drives and includes all the necessary cables. You are still able to switch the drive, you just don't have to worry about buying the extra cable since you already have it.
