Considering not waiting any longer and buying the top-of-the-line iMac 24"

So, basically the situation I am in, is that as the state of the GBP is pretty low, I will save around 800 EUR if I buy the 3.06 version of the 24" iMac from cancom (http://www.cancomuk.com), which will cost me around 1470 EUR instead around 2200, which is what it costs here in Slovenia. The thing is, that I will probably not be wasting this kind of money on a computer any time soon, so I am asking you whether you think the speed and overall performance of the new iMacs that are coming are worth the wait, even if it means waiting until June or so? Because I REALLY cannot wait that long.

I was in your shoes on Jan 20.

I got tired of waiting and figured for the games I play and the work I do, the current top of the line iMac was gonna be great for me so I just bought it. There are times that I feel like maybe I should have waited, but the more I see speculation with dates mid year and later, it bothers me less and less.

I love the machine. I turned off my (pretty decent) windows machine to make room for the imac and the windows box hasn't tasted power since. Overall I don't regret not waiting, I'm having a lot of fun learning the way around the machine and it's still gonna be pretty decent even after the new models are released I believe.

Suggestion, if you do pull the trigger and get the 3.06 iMac, head over to crucial.com and pick up 2x 2Gb sticks of ram for the box. It's the right thing to do, you're iMac will thank you.

Just my $0.02 (unsure of conversion rates).
 
Well to be honest I am in the same debate right now.

The 3.06 seems like a powerful machine, top of the line CPU, very good graphics card (the 8800 is a beast and will play all games currently out in preety decent graphics), big screen and you can get the RAM to 4gb which for me is enough.

However the new iMac will probably feature 2 graphics card (9400M and 9xxx depends on the model). I guess the high-end 24' will have something like 9800 which of course outpowers the current iMac's 8800. Plus Apple will probably do something useful with 2 graphic cards when Snow leopard comes. I assume it will not be just hybrid-SLI (no real usage on a desktop) but it will really use one of the two as a CPU.

Other than that I am not sure if Apple will go quad-core although I think Apple are trying to focus on mutlitasking more it really depends on the cost and the heat apparently. I guess a LED screen will come too.

So the main changes will probably be : Graphic cards and the LED screen. I don't really care for the quad core as the 3.06ghz duo is quite powerful but I do care about the graphics and the screen.

*As my current machine still manages well (thanks to overclocking) I will wait as I am not in the need for a new computer.
 
I think if you do go for a iMac 24" with that 8800GS, I'd recommend going for the refurbished or a used one.. That way you save the most you possibly can, and maybe then you wont have any regrets when the new ones come out. Im waiting.. I hate it, but imo its good cuz it means new LED screen, better gpu, faster and possibly more memory..
 
Im in exactly the same situation! The top spec imac now seems a pretty good machine but i hate the idea of spending that much on a mac only to see what i could have had for the same money a few months later. I could do with the better graphics and the quad core and the led screen will be so much better! Im rubbish at waiting but i think this time im going to wait as i know i will regret it. I hope it comes out in the next few weeks...Ive heard it might not be here till June which wouldn't be cool!

Do you think the updated version will be more expensive than the currrent ones?
 
so... your purchase question comes down to whether you think the GBP will be this weak in six months?

that might be a little out of our league here :cool:

Please don't take this as an insult, because it isn't, but...there must be 20 guys/gals here speculating as to what will be in the new iMac and when it will be available. This is great fun, of course...but...

No one really knows, as far as I can tell. :D

Still, taking into account that I will save 800 (!) EUR if buying this...Well...Do you think the difference between the new LEDs and the current iMac screens will make THAT big of a deal? Because I can understand what's the deal with laptops, because the LED takes 30% less power, but with desktop computer...I don't know.

Well the £ wont be gaining any of its strength for a while and the UK will not even consider switching to the euro in the near future/ combine that with the way apple usually price products in europe and chances are you will get a simmilar price cut on the new models.
 
New iMacs gonna have LED screens? I already think my current iMac (bought last Nov) is more than bright :p

Just bought a 20" iMac a week ago and have no regrets. I say go for it.

I just bought the high-end iMac. My guess is that it will remain competitive, in comparison to whatever constitutes the standard configuration in the next revision.

For instance, the high-end white iMac had the Geforce 7600 option. It performed as well or better than the HD2600 pro in the current generation:

I figure that I'm in good shape for a few years, and if it starts showing its age, I can just drop a copy of Vista or XP in and get a boost for gaming in bootcamp.
 
You should wait, definitely wait...

Quad Core imacs with led backlit screen with H-IPS panels like the current 24" LED ACD (which is absolutely freakin gorgeous) and the ability to put more than 4gb of RAM with a newer faster 9xxx Nvidia GPU for roughly the same price which the imacs will get updated within the next month or less...

Wait man, you will kick yourself to death if you dont! I promise you. ;)

No, I totally agree with you, everything I posted is pure speculation (well everything but the 9400M). I really doubt Apple will put in 9800, but as there is an 8800 model there can be an 9800. Led screens became standard for Apple now so I guess this is coming too..

Well it's like the stock market you can never be sure... I believe many things about the new iMac but you never know what's Apple going to do.

But I am going to wait as I don't need a new computer right now, if you need one go for the high-end iMac it's a powerful machine in my opinion.

Remember that most specifications of the upcoming iMacs are pure speculation. This includes LED displays, although it is quite logical to assume that top-of-the iMacs will have similar screens to the Apple Cinema.

Bottom line is: there is nothing that confirms the rumours surrounding the iMacs, except perhaps the use of nVidia's chipset. If you are waiting for LED you just *might* get very dissapointed when the machines come out.

I am waiting for the new iMacs because I have decided to do so. Price is not really an issue. If the new iMacs keep the attractive aesthetics and the hardware value is right I'll buy one, otherwise screw apple.

But I hate to lose the FW400 and aren't exactly a fan for the mini displayport which I think will be the features in the new iMac....

However, would love to have a LED backlit display and a quad core processor...

In the end, can't take the wait any longer and went for a CTO 2.8 upgraded with the 8800GS and a 500gb hard drive earlier today....

Anyway, do u guys have any experience on how long do the CTOs take to be delivered and any issues of dead pixel issues on the current crop of iMacs?
 
I couldnt help myself and bought one, 3.06Ghz 24'' 4Gb Memory and 750gb, i LOVE it, yet i do wish waiting till atleast March when everyone seems to believe its coming out
 
I've been waiting new models for over half year and now I've also made my decicion. I'm going for 24" 2.8GHz, 2GB RAM (buy that 4GB later) and 8800. I'm bored for waiting and that specific model will do my job more than nicely. I was thinking with myself that what do I get from new models? I can't afford quad-core or more than 2GB of DDR3. So there is nothing for me to wait. Okey LED will be nice and new GPUs but I think 8800 is enough for me.

Depends where you live. It usually takes 2-5 bussiness days if you confiqure it. My friend confiqured one and it took 4 days to ship it so it's quite fast
 
Well then. I have decided. I will put all my money into this beast, and hopefully it will serve me good. But after the new ones come out. The thing is, if the new ones come out, they will still be cheaper in the UK, so...And I already run a Mac OSX, so yeah. Thanks guys!

I guess if you "REALLY cannot wait", then you answered your own question. :confused:

Personally, though, I'm gonna wait. I'd love to have FW400 so I'm (vainly?) hoping they'll keep it in the new iMac. But the other possibilities surrounding a new iMac, although rumors, make it worth waiting for me.

Heck, even if Apple does a low-key refresh rather than a major redesign, they always keep the same price point but with the new tech...so I can't see any reason to buy the current model now unless as the OP said, you "REALLY cannot wait that long".
 
i know this is stupid optimistic but i'm waiting for the quad core, 30", 1tb(std), 4gb ram (std) and blu ray (at least as an option) i'm hoping for summer or maybe 2011 haha
