I'm on the cusp of buying a Santos De Cartier.

So, my Apple Watch (and 61 straps!) will be laid to rest.

I'm just not sure whether to do it or not?

I love the customisability of the Apple Watch, also little things like unlocking my Macs, Apple Pay etc, but I have always just loved the Santos.

What do you think?

Take care.

Keep the Apple Watch so you can ensure that the Santos De Cartier is showing the right time :D

If you have an analog watch already I would wear that for a week or two and see if you miss any Apple Watch features. Or buy a cheapie and try it.

You don't want to buy the Santos De Cartier and then find you go back to AW.

Asking Apple people if you should dump and/or not buy Apple stuff is going to get you overwhelming calls to "don't do it!" Step into a politically-biased forum and ask if you should switch parties... or Coca Cola drinker forum and ask if you should go Pepsi. Asking a very biased crowd about anything gets you very biased answers.

Do what YOU like. Who cares what strangers you'll probably never meet in person think?

If that's not an answer you are looking for: "Heavens no. Keep the precious. No other watch can compete in any way. Are there still other watches in the world at all? What if you are in <oddball situation> where Apple Watch might make a difference? Why would you want to go from cool kid to uncool kid? 99% would never quit Apple Watch once they've owned one." Etc. Etc.

I've made some good friends here on MacRumors, in the Apple Watch forum.

Hence my posting.

Thanks for your response.

Personally, I've never understood the attraction of super-expensive, high-end watches—particularly since all they do is tell you the time, and possibly day and date as well.

I've a nice... uhm... been so long I'm not sure... Citizen, I think? Gold-plated. Very sharp-looking wrist watch. Used to be my dress watch. It was fairly expensive, by my lights, anyway, when I bought it some 40+ years ago. Goodness knows what such a watch would cost today.

I believe I re-batteried it once. It has since died again. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My Apple Watch is far more useful to me. To me a wrist watch is a functional item, not a fashion statement.

But to each their own. If having a high-end watch on your wrist makes you happy and you're not putting you or your family into hopeless debt in acquiring one: By all means. It's your life. Your money.

I don't do that double wristing silliness, so my Apple Watch (and 61 straps!) will be laid to rest.

Got to say this, this is the 4th or 5th time you’ve posted about this over the past couple years.
Why does it have to be either or? Why not enjoy both? Wear one for some days and the other for other days.
Obviously you want that Cartier, so get it.
Just don’t post any pictures of it in this sub forum :)

I'd actually like to see a picture. There must be some way to work it in so it's not completely off topic here. ;)

To Tommy: I agree with posters who said if you want it you should get it. And I also like the idea of switching up between them, wearing one some days and the other on other days.

QOL will get you back to your AW if you‘re not careful.
Like you said, it’s the „little things“. I definitely wouldn’t want to switch.

Ironically, I learned from horological sources that the new Santos bracelet was inspired by the Apple Link Steel Bracelet. After learning that, I tried on a Santos the other day. It’s a very luxurious and beautiful watch. However, afterwards, I noted how both watches felt very similar on the wrist and felt happy with my Apple Watch Series 9 Stainless Steel with steel watch bracelet. You may find that an Apple Steel Link Bracelet or Nomad equivalent will give you the feel of the Santos with all the functionality of an Apple Watch. And that may save you $7000 dollars.

Different things: jewelry versus smartwatch. I own jewelry watches and an Apple Watch. One goes with me to the gym, the other I wear when I go out. So my advice: use both 🤓

Why do you compare consumer electronics gadget with a luxury mechanical watch?

It's like saying - "I'm going to ditch my smartphone and have personal secretary", good for you man, godspeed!

Sorry, never been able understand why someone would want to put a watch costing a minimum of US$7K on their wrist (I have enough resistance to doing so with an Apple Watch). Too easy to bash it or end up on the wrong end of a mugging and being robbed. But that’s just me.

I went from no watch, to Apple Watch from day 1 for years, to mechanical watch during the pandemic and haven’t looked back.

I miss the health tracking (oura ring sort of scratches the itch, but not really the same) and Apple Pay - but other than that zero desire to wear an Apple Watch. Have four mechanical watches now, they all get wear (but some more than others).

Highly recommend a good mechanical watch, and the Cartier is great. Join the dark side 🤣

Thanks. If you do get one, I'd love to see a picture of you wearing it. It's a beautiful watch.

I see someone below made a suggestion that a steel link bracelet on the Apple watch may give you the same feel. That may be, as far as how it feels against your wrist. But even just from these photos, I can tell that the Santos watch face is beautifully built, and no digital watch face can replicate that feel. As other people have said, it's jewelry, and if having a beautiful piece of jewelry brings you joy, and you can afford it, why not?

Still, I do suspect you might miss the smart watch functions of the Apple watch. If nothing else, every time Apple releases new watch bands, I can see you wanting to buy them, even though you are wearing the Santos! ;)

Why bother going back to a dumb watch. You can’t customize the watch faces , have apps or get notifications. The deep OLED black is simply beautiful.I believe it’s a step in the wrong direction. You buying a dumb watch

The Santos is an awesome watch with a storied history - Wear it in good health!

Nothing wrong with switching to a regular watch if it makes you happy, and the AW will always be there if you tire of the Santos.

I move away from smartwatches regularly, often find myself returning to them, is all part of the fun!
