i would just buy a 30inch cinema display and hook it on the mac pro and upgrade

the speed difference wont be really noticable, between the i 7 and your 2 xeon's , in real world usage ,
and with a desktop you always have the possibility to upgrade
with the iMac you pretty much stuck

and for quad core you could shove in 2 higher clocked xeons maybe 3.4 ghz harpertowns socket 771 , max out your ram to full 32gb , and fit a better graphic card
then the iMac with i 7 looks like a tortoise on the back in comparison

There is nothing new in this answer and it has absolutely nothing to do with my question... and BTW: Harpertowns are incompatible with the 2006 Mac Pro.

I was asking for real-world experience concerning the number and throughput capability of the USB controller(s) of the iMac.

Your Mac Pro is so much better than the new imac's it would be a downgrade and you'll be kicking yourself later. Of all the current Apple computers only the Mac pro has my respect. It's a powerfull workstation at an honest price that you can upgrade when the time comes. Just buy that badass 30" display that puts the imac's display to shame and you'll have the best of both worlds.

*sigh* OK, once again: I'm perfectly aware of the fact that this would be a downgrade. The point is that I just don't need all the power my Mac Pro provides and its power consumption is thus not justifiable.

My question from my previous posts remains unanswered...

sorry as you can upgrade from clovertoewn to harpertown on the macpro 2,1 , did not read exact your signature yours only the 1.1
, but you could upgrade to 3.0ghz clovertowns which gives you a speed increase
and for usb ,
if your macpro cant handle 3 dvb-t usb sticks then i guess there is something wrong as i have 2 usb tv sticks ,one pctv nano stick dvb-t and one eye-tv plus 250 also dvb-t on my emac G4 1.42
here and they both work perfectly fine i can watch one program while recording 2 others , cant use a third one as i need one usb port for my keyboard
using elgato eyetv on both

Now my actual concern: How many controllers are there behind the new iMac's 4 USB ports? And will they suffice my described needs?

No real world experience you want, but I do have an i7 iMac and will attempt to answer your first question.

There are two controllers.

One goes to the iSight, IR Receiver, and at least one (possibly two) USB ports.
The other goes to the Bluetooth, memory chard reader and at least one and possibly two USB ports.

I expect there are two ports on the back of the iMac for each of the two controllers.

Thanks, talmy.

I think I'll wait until the teething troubles of the new iMac generation are over and then go for one, trading in my Mac Pro.

The only bad thing about this switch is that I also will have to switch from eSATA to FW800 for my external drives.
Maybe I'll wait until iMacs are equipped with eSATA... we'll see... ;)

thats the other point of keeping your macpro
you can use firewire 400/800 externals , esata externals or usb 2.0 externals ,
and you can have many of them , just fit another extension card in your pci slots , i think you got 3 free ones as standard and if you need a better graphic card just fit it in or you fancy 2 graphic cards no problem , if you run out of harddrive space you can just fit in another 2 tb harddrive or 2 or 3 , so you wont run out that quickly with 8 tb available

on the iMac you are limited in what is at the back

but then again , i sold my powermac g5 quads as they had been overkill for what is use a computer for , bit photoshop , bit video, rendering ,word processing ,nothing the eMac or the iMac g3 cant handle

MacHamster68, thank you for pointing out the obvious. I am aware of the restraints an iMac brings with it, I owned two of them (Core Duo, Core 2 Duo), before that, a PowerMac G5 2.5 Dual, before that several PowerMac G4s, before that several eMacs and iMacs, before that several Performas, before that a Macintosh Classic II, Macintosh SE/30, Macintosh SE...

In short, I know the benefits of both sides and asked one or two specific questions concerning only the iMac i7.
And as I stated above, the only point I don't like about the iMac i7 is the lack of an (or a few) eSATA-port(s). With that I will deal either by switching back to FireWire or by waiting for an iMac that sports eSATA ports.

So what's the point of your post(s)? Or are you trying to amass enough posts to allow for an avatar?

from how i read it, he's just posting his opinion??????

some people may overlook the obvious so whats the harm in pointing it out???

sorry if i annoyed you with the obvious , but i think you cant point things out often enough , there are still people out there who never had a mac before and they might read these forums to decide waht they should buy
