(CNN) -- A month after being released to mostly positive reviews, Samsung's flagship phone is getting some validation from Consumer Reports. The publication has run all its tests, kicked the phone's tires, and named the Android-powered Galaxy S4 its top rated smartphone.
The previous list-topper was the Optimus G, a solid $100 4.7-inch phone from LG that held Consumer Reports' No. 1 spot for several months. The Optimus G is now ranked as the No. 2 smartphone, followed by the HTC One, the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Apple iPhone 5.

<Not knocking Samsung but these reports...>

In fairness does anyone 'ever' read these consumer reports things. I have never met anyone in my life who has or hasn't bought a product based on anything they have ever said or say; simply because they are oblivious the organisation actually exists or frankly care it does either.

Nice to see them rank the Optimus G so high considering I just bought one on ebay. Although I am surprised that I got the phone for so little considering how well it's been received by those who reviewed it.

As much as I like the S4, Consumer Reports has been lost my trust for their reviews. I wouldn't be surprised if a favor is being fulfilled.

I wish that they should stop trying to name 'the best". We are in a period where one's choice and needs are the overriding factors, and lucky that there is a wealth of superb phones out at the moment from HTC, Apple, Samsung, LG and Sony just to mention some, and each one could easily be classed as "the best" for differing reasons and users needs. :)

Consider how slow Sony and others update their phones. We have to give SS, Apple,... credit. 6 months back when I visit a Sony store in the mall, their Xperia phones were still on 2.2.

I agree, but the latest flagship Sony Xperia Z comes with JB 4.1, and for the outdoors person is the nearest yet to a waterproof phone, tis a stunner. :)

I checked them once when I was looking for a decent vacuum cleaner. I wasn't sure where to look, and I needed one that would help with allergens. I think they cater to old people, which would explain their comments about large screens. Here is their page on the S4.

It looks like you need a subscription to get the full info, or maybe that's all of it. They also have a writeup type review here.

As much as I like the S4, Consumer Reports has been lost my trust for their reviews. I wouldn't be surprised if a favor is being fulfilled.

That is quite a passive accusation based on nothing:p.

I use them but not really for smartphones but they're at least good for appliance and car ratings. Like any other review sites I would never use them as my sole source of information especially for larger purchases.

You can say what you want about their reviews, but accusing them of doing favors is pretty far out there.

Their whole decades-long rep is based on not taking ads or being involved in payback of any kind.

That is quite a passive accusation based on nothing:p.

I guess you never heard about the Consumer Reports roll test scandal on Suzuki, Jeeps and SUVs, Baby seat scandal, and etc.

I used to trust in Consumer Reports back in the days, but now they just seem biased and bandwagon hoppers.

Most(probably all) of their tests have never been scientific(for lack of better word). It's always been subjective.

Also Consumer Reports has been pulling the hard to cancel subscription tactics amongst users. That speaks volumes about their trust worthiness IMO.

Well...i see all the posts knocking the S4....saying that Consumer Reports can't be trusted or they had some kind of ulterior motive.....I wonder if it would be different if the magazine article was for say the HTC One....or well pick a phone....probably not the same people would be disagreeing with the report.....JMHO....Some consistently say they are not knocking the S4 but then consistently do so......

I think it is the accolades that count. I bet Samsung will no doubt paste "Consumer Report Best Phone", "Editor's Choice", "Mobile of the Year" etc etc on the advertisement posters/banners.

Just like people do take notice those "ISO", "Greenmark" etc, I bet these awards can give a nudge to those fence sitters to buy the S4.

I think the S4 is an excellent phone, potentially, in many eyes, the best phone of the year. However, I trust Consumer Reports for toaster reviews and the like.

I am a car afficianado, and I do, silly me, being a fellow South African, feel somewhat chuffed at the achievements of Elon Musk and his Tesla S, although I have zero reason to take any pride in his individual, very personal, achievements.

However, 99 out of 100 for the car, the highest ever for any car ever tested? (CS seem to forget the Lexus).

A bit of a joke I believe. Great car? Yes. Ground-breaking? In many ways.

But 1 point short of a perfect score? Ridiculous.

I quite agree with you on the Tesla.....they dropped the ball on that report!
Just to kinda reenforce what CR was saying....Forbes also reports on Samsung and they sales and profits they are experiencing....

Actually you see what you want to see.. and your coming across very defensive about the S4.

Other than Livefromnyc, no-one here has posted that the s4 is bad or doesn't deserve credit or is a bad phone, we were knocking 'consumer reports' and the merit they have deciding what's the best and what relevance that has to people in the real world.

No one has suggested any other phone either, you are the one bringing other handsets (HTC one) into the equation, so one could equally make the argument thats an issue playing on your mind not the posters here.. ;)

You got that wrong. I never said the S4 didn't deserve credit or is a bad phone. I started my post with "As much as I like the S4".

Not defensive at all or at least no more than you are about the HTC One.....but i have seen too many posts from you that always start with " i am not knocking the S4" Then proceed to do just that. It is ok that you chose the One over the S4. I too had both phones and did the side by side comparison as you did. But I chose the S4 but until last night i never felt the need to always point out the One's shortcomings......i don't need validation for my choice. They are both great phones and it is a great time to be an Android phone user! :)

No I meant as in suggesting consumer reports had an ulterior motive.

I'm not defensive about the HTC one, I'll happily point out the flaws of both devices. Doesn't bother me one bit. And in this thread I wasn't knocking the S4, show me where I was.... The only thing on the S4 i've ever knocked about it is Touchwiz - the route & cause of all the S4's glitchiness.

I've already made enquiries with Google Dublin here to buy a 'google edition' of the S4 when/if it comes available outside of the USA. So yeah accuse me of many things, but knocking the S4 on its hardware and you'd be miles wrong!!!

Agreed. Everyone has different needs and no one phone meets them all.

Its ironic that if CR was praising the One, people wouldnt be trashing CR and be completely OK with them.

I respect CR for one thing only, car reviews. They actually spend THEIR own money buying cars, unlike the normal press.

Nope. I would still have no faith in their best list either way regardless. Remember the One is actually third on their list and it means nothing to me.

So yes they are indeed praising the One, but is it ironic? Nope because their 'top list' still means nothing...
