What are you using? Calibre? I was going to wait till there was an update to Calibre for the iPad. I remember when I used it to convert some books to MOBI for my Kindle that there was a section for the output file and they had a list of formats and both the Kindle and Kindle DX were on there. I think this was so the file is properly formatted to the size of the device (i could be wrong) and figured they will be adding the iPad to this eventually.
Yes I used Calibre to do the conversion from the kindle format to epub. I found that only about 1/3 of my books actually were drm'd, but using some python scripts found on the net and your kindle id that the books are bound to, you can strip out the drm.
Although Calibre does not yet support the ipad as a hardware device, it does create epub files, I also am keeping the books in the Calibre library, so if I find that some changes are needed I can do a bulk change really easy.

Yes, and if you have non-DRM epub books in your library you can load them on to the ibook library and see them on the bookself. Calibre lets you add covers
so everything can look nice and neat.of course we 'd all love for you to share the drm stripping method.

I did some test strips the other day. It isn't the most intuitive but it does work; but all I could find was for Windows.
A google search for "Remove Kindle DRM" or something of that nature would lead you to the final solution.
As everyone else, I have no intention to steal, upload, distribute, give away, or anything else any book I have purchased, I just want to be able to use it on any app on my iPhone, import it into iBookstore or put it on my iPad when / if I get one.

I do like that the process to remove the drm requires you to have your kindle sn# so its not like you can use it on other peoples files. So my moral/immoral meter on this stays equal. I bought them, I still own them and am not giving my books to anyone else. I do image that the publishers that offer kindle versions will also be offering epub versions, after all apple does not restrict the epub books from being drm'd.
After converting you might find that you need to "clean up" some of the files, you can use Sigil for this ( edits epub files).
Hopefully Baen will offer epub along with its other ebook formats. Any bets on how long the Nook will last?, if B&N would support the iPad that would be a major help.

A Mac Python version exists that runs through Terminal.
For people who are searching, the person who devised the method was named Igor to remove DRM from Kindle AZW books. That should provide a torrent of places to look.
How is this going to work? When will we see eBook ability within iTunes? I dont have an iPad yet and I dont see any eBook availability in iTunes.....
You don't break any laws by converting a file from one format to another for your own use. If that were the case it would be illegal to photocopy a few pages of a book you own for your own personal use. It's not.
I'm pretty sure several comic book reader apps have already announced ipad versions. (I understand this isn't answering your question, but personally I think I'd rather use a CBR-specific app for graphic novels.)
Actually, it is. Because there's DRM it violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. DMCA doesn't provide provisions for Fair Use or personal copies. To be able to convert from one format to another means you have to break the encryption on the first version. Paper isn't DRM'ed. That's why any US-manufactured DVD copying software with CSS decryption incorporated got sued out of existence years ago. Anything you can get now comes from off-shore out of the reach of US law.
The Kindle Python scripts used to be available on many of the Kindle discussion boards until they started getting cease and desist letters and then the actual scripts were banned from the sites. There's still a fair amount of discussion on places like MobileRead but it's up to the end user to find the scripts for themselves.
calibre to epub
I recently tried converting from a PDF to epub and only the table of contents converted but the PDF which is the bulk of the contents outputs to another pdf.
SO input was PDF
output was epub + PDF... go figure?
It is nicer to read via ibooks than good reader but maybe that is the only option then...
