I'd give it away to someone. If you need to save money, using this discount is only going to spend it, not save it.

exactly... great way for them to tempt you to spend your hard earn cash. If you can do something with it (use it/ebay it/give it out), then by all means buy it but if you're buying for the sake of the discount then isn't it just a bit of a false economy?

well thats my point, if it turns out that i could put it to something useful then it would be worthwhile:)

Any ideas as to whether it would serve as a machine for testing websites under bootcamp?

thanks for the reply,

Well I am aiming to start 9-5 web site creation when I move (working from home), and know that testing the sites with windows browsers is important.

On top of this, my girlfriend has said that she wouldn't mind having a machine to write on (im talking 100,000 words per document)

Would the 2.26 mac mini be any good for this? I would be keeping the HD and RAM stock, as upgrades in the uk cost as much as those from apple for the mini.

In this case, I think that I would partition the drive right down the middle with 80gb for osx and 80gb for windows.

Would this be enough space for each boot partition?

Wirelessly posted (nokia e63: Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.2; U; Series60/3.1 NokiaE63-1/100.21.110; Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 ) AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413)

wow. To be honest I could not think of a better match! The mini will fit both those roles perfectly! Will be amazingly good.

I say go for it....

Agreed - those are perfect uses for the Mini.

writing documents: i guess Word? not very demanding at all..

running windows: in bootcamp? still not demanding..

running windows: in parallels/vmware? getting a tiny bit demanding, 4GB RAM can handle it perfectly fine though!

even with some flash development WRT websites, the MacMini will handle it really well :)

Buy it, It's always good to have an extra computer, and if you connect it to your TV, you'll love it with the Apple Wireless Bluetooth keyboard!

That's exactly how I've originally connected it up, however, from the couch, the text are too small for someone without 20/20 vision.

pages actually, but i would like to ask, would it be ok with VERY long documents (around 100,000 words)?

Yeah, it wold be nice to have my mac pro running osx on one side and the mini in bootcamp on the other for on the fly checking etc

If I were to go this route, would it be possible with 2GB RAM?

Again, is this for the low end machine or the high end? I am probably just going to go for the stock low end machine.

Also, is thee even that much of a difference between 2.26 with 2GB ram Vs 2.53 with 4GB ram?

never worked with documents of that size (only 25,000 words in MSWord). if pages handled the same as word, it will be perfectly fine :)

oh yea def - why havent you gone the virtual machine route with your macpro? it would easily handle it.

If I were to go this route, would it be possible with 2GB RAM?
very possible!! even on my CoreDuo MBP (specs in sig) i give xp 512mb RAM and the rest to OSX. it runs perfectly fine!

i was refrring to the machine that you were looking at purchasing ;) (low end)

the CPU speeds are negligible. maybe a 15% increase overall with the higher specced.

there would be a significant difference if using a virtual machine at the same time as using OSX, otherwise it will work perfectly :D
