Cooling in the new 2020 27" iMac?

Where did I attest this? Oh, I didn't. But let me tell you, the idle fan speed of 1200 RPM is very annoying on the iMac 2019 and 2020. If you can't hear the fan noise I've already explained why.

I've had 27" 2009, 2012, 2015 and they have all been quiet at idle in comparison to later iMacs. From what I know it's because Apple changed fan model in 2019 and 2020 iMacs. 2017 I believe is using the older, quieter fan.

I'm using Mac Fan Control and SMC Fan Control to lower the idle fan speed to 1000 RPM on my 2019 iMac, so my iMac is actually quiet at idle.

On my desk I have the 2020 iMac right beside my old 2014 iMac and there is no difference in noise.

If you’d be in a silent room you would notice the difference. Unless something is wrong with your old iMac of course.

Older iMacs tend to have more dust clogging the vent intakes at the bottom, hence less air flow hence less air noise.
After I vacuumed the intake vents of my 2014 iMac it sounded the same as my 2020 iMac.

I regulary vaccum the intake vents of my iMacs (and the screens, which accumulate a lot of dust).
