Ah yes! That did the job. Thank you. :)

It's a matter of having a 'light' touch, I guess. I'd tapped all over the page earlier, but only succeeded in either making the page larger or in arriving at a new one.

If you want to open a .pdf in Dropbox you can but you can access all of your Dropbox files via Goodreader.

In addition, if you find a .PDf you can open it in Goodreader and then upload it into Dropbox from there.

I have a large DropBox folder with all my research literature synced to GoodReader. Works very well for me.

With GoodReader, you can copy PDF files over right in iTunes. just plug in your iPad, go to the sync screen, click the apps tab at the top, click on GoodReader, then at the bottom you can drag and drop in your PDF files.

Piece of cake :)

Uh, you do realize you're replying (snarkily) to a post from 2010, right? From the very first few days of the iPad's existence? Do you really have to search that far into the past to find something to complain about? Thread necromancy is a dark art, it'll get you funny looks from the villagers and they might start gathering their torches and pitchforks.

For what it's worth, you can now store PDFs in iBooks, and have Apple sync them via iCloud to all devices, though I still have several GB of PDFs (mostly programming books) in Dropbox, and I've enabled Dropbox as a location in PDF Expert, so it syncs the books automatically,

I realize this thread is old. I mean no disrespect, I'm disappointed & frustrated that this is still an issue on the most current iPad generations. I'm frustrated that there isn't an easy way to consolidate all pdfs & share them. There's a lot the iPad can do but handling pdfs easily & for free is next to impossible. Dropbox isn't free & sharing from Google Drive had its errors with iPad. Storing in iBooks works but there is no way to store multiple at once. It's a slow process of moving one at a time. Then when you want to share pdfs from iBook is even more difficult. I'm even more upset that I had to go all the way back to a thread in 2010 to find anything half decent on this topic.

What problems are you having?

Of course Dropbox is free. Or do you have 1TB of PDFs to sync? Are you aware that iBooks now supports automatic sync via iCloud?

Just use AirDrop. It's painless and easy. Your use case seems to require something very specific. Describe your workflow for PDFs.

I'm sorry, but objectively you're wrong. Handlin PDFs has become TONS easier.

Go download Adobe's Acrobat app. You can store and read as many PDFs as you want and share them.

Dropbox isn't free? In what universe? I have never paid for Dropbox, and my account has had over 20GB of storage for many years. You're railing against not everything being free, but your iPad wasn't free - you've picked the direction where sometimes good things cost money.

I use the app Documents by Readdle to download my PDFs from my Google Drive free accounts.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/documents-5-fast-pdf-reader/id364901807?mt=8

I also use the app GDrive when I need to search for a filename, from these accounts.

https://itunes.apple.com/br/app/gdrive-for-google-drive/id531569865?mt=8

The only issue is that you have to open each PDF manually and then copy to the desired ebook reader, in my case, MarginNote. After that, you need to delete the copy you just downloaded to Documents by Readdle.

This isn't the ideal way to store things in the iPad, but I have been doing for a while. And I have multiple 15 GB free accounts, which can store other stuff, too (for the record, Google does not care if you create more than one account, and you may sometimes be able to create without the SMS verification code).

Heh Google Drive or Dropbox = NO PRIVACY. Do you think Tesla, BMW, etc. would trust putting their next car construction plans on Google Drive or iCloud. They don't trust each other, and I and many other people don't trust cloud storages, too. Cloud for all should be just an option, not an requirement.

So encrypt it with e.g. AES256 before uploading it. This is not a difficult problem, you're just making it sound like it is.

You'd better be encrypting your stuff before using any kind of transfer medium if you're going to deal with top-secret data.

If you have sensitive data, leave it offline, since there is no privacy in the internet, and assuming that a password-protected file or encrypted one is 100% secure is dangerous.

Assuming that an offline file is 100% secure is also dangerous. If your data must absolutely not be exposed e.g. nuclear launch codes, always encrypt it. Just because it is only available in a physical form doesn't mean someone can't just break in and take it.

Problem is that Apple does not support offline storage like an external hard disk. They force iOS users to use iCloud for everything. Somehow they don't get what users want. I'm already looking forward to the next Surface Pro (5). Then my 100% pure Apple ecosystem (client side) will become mixed.

Sure they do. It's called a MacBook. Your arguments aren't really very coherent are they?

The external storage argument for iOS is seriously overdone beyond belief. I'm not defending Apple, but people care too much about it. Just get a MacBook or a Windows hybrid device, but for heavens sake stop whining about it.

Yeah that's what me and other professionals are slowly doing, jumping on an other horse, sad but true. If they continue going this path, soon they will have to beg for money again, or massively reduce costs. I give em 10-20 years, till the reality catch-up.

It seems like it would have been much simpler if Apple had just made a simple Disk Mode where you can store all your various files and then certain applications could detect them and open them.

Is it really that hard Apple?
I know this is a whole different fix. But I have a USB with built wifi. Airstash. I use it for all my work files including pdf's. I connect the iPad to the Airstash and I can transfer files back and forth. When I pick the doc, the iPad gives me options for which program to open with. This way I have all my files at my fingertips all the time, even when I don't any cellular or wifi as the Airstash has its own wifi.

I had to travel and do some training this past week and it was awesome to do everything from the iPad. I plugged into the big screen via HDMI. I had saved my PowerPoint to Notability and was able to highlight, underline and circle as I presented - no need for a pointer. I also used a blank Notability instead of a flip chart. And then I also had my videos and the workbook on the iPad.

What in the world are you talking about? I use a wifi sdcard reader daily with my iPad. There are tons of wireless storage options available for iOS from sandisk, wd, ravpower, etc.
Wifi storages are just bad workarounds. Try to browse over wifi with a connected wifi storage, at the same time. See the problem? Then compare the wifi storage speed agains usb3 storage. See the second problem? Thats all just treating the problem rather than the symptoms.

You said "Apple does not support external storage". Now that you've been proven wrong, you're trying to move the goalposts, a common tactic.

If you don't want wifi, there are flash drives with lightning connectors.
