if they are your dvds and it is for your use it's totally legal.

i can recommend MacTheRipper to extract the dvd content, then Handbrake to extract the content to an MPG or similar file.

remember, only use your own discs...

It's legal for you to back them up.. but where I get hazy is for 'backing them up' onto an SD card for use in another type of media player, e.g., not a DVD player.

Not true. I cannot copy it and sell it. I don't think you quite meant "you can do what you want with it."

you can go straight to handbrake, no need for MacTheRipper. I have done this before, and just put them directly on to my ibook using handbrake

i think many are a little too sensitive about pirating on this forum. How bout we just help the person with his/her problem by answering their question and leave copying/pirating laws to the government

How about we just stick to the rules and don't? It's not like we haven't done anything wrong ever in our lives but geez, just accept the fact that it is a crime and we don't want to talk about it here.
If you cannot figure it out by yourself you probably shouldn't be doing it in the first place.

OK, I know you people are sick of hearing about pirating, but I have to say something...
I'll keep it simple; any time you break an encryption on a DVD Movie, it is against the law. By copying a DVD (either to another DVD or a HDD) you are breaking that encryption.

It's one thing when you say "I don't care that I'm breaking the law," then I'll keep quiet, (because really what am I going to say?) but when you try and make excuses just to make yourself feel better, that I have to say something.

Time and time again....

MacRumors not only doesn't condone the discussion or promotion of piracy in any way shape or form, but we also suspect that those who engage in piracy have poor personal hygiene... <sniff>

In the US and a few other countries the doctrine of "Fair Use" is in play.

This DOES NOT mean you can do what you like with copyright material, you certainly can't legally edit or alter the material, and you cannot distribute the material in any way beyond personal use (or for educational purposes etc.).

The OP has a legitimate question provided he owns the discs, but as the same process is obviously used to pirate discs, it's a grey area.

MR is tolerant to a degree of the discussions of the technology and the social implications, but too many threads are simply a call for info on how to steal other peoples work.

The Fair Use doctrine does not apply to The UK currently (although changes in the law are afoot). It is currently illegal to make ANY copies of copyright material, and that includes transferring songs to your iPod.

I think this falls under "Unenforcable Legislation".

I use the following procedure to rip, compress, and copy files from DVD onto my ibook so that I can watch compressed videos of DVDs I own on my ibook, and have multiple movies with me for trips.

Yes the quality is reduced, but I can also watch more movies on one battery charge, then I can while using the built in DVD drive.

There are also some great programs linked from this site!

Playback, I havent got round to playing games, music or video yet, I bought it purely for the sat nav. I was unaware that is was sold as a games console, I'm not into portable games console, it was the cheapest satnav around, with extras, I love it!!!!!!. It has a lot of potential, just that TT were very bad in its marketing?????.

Give it to Jobes and he'll sell millions. But heavy competition with PSP etc.

Didnt know a simple question of me wanting to see my own DVD which I purchased legally from shops on to another device is such a problem, I aint someone that knows the in's and outs of computors and dont profess to be an expert. All I want is some guidance which is what a forum is for. Who mentioned anything about piracy and re-sale????.

So is transferring my dvd from my Ipod/imac to my brothers Ipod legal or not. If it is whats the difference transfering itunes/dvd to my Gizmondo.

This has yet to be contested in court, for what it's worth.

The DMCA supercedes fair use in many instances and, until the DMCA is upheld in court and declared to render those fair use rights null and void, I'll continue to transcode and backup media that I purchased however I see fit.

It's only a problem when people fail to stand up for their rights as a consumer.

It's your disc. If you want to play it, play it. If that means transcoding it to play on a different device or in a different codec, then god damnit, transcode it. Stand up and insist on your rights, as a consumer, and don't let a bunch of legislators pass a law (which none of them read or understood) and rip those rights away from you.

My comment towards piracy wasn't directed at you but rather at the people that see nothing wrong with it. There is on the other hand the argument of fair use, which I fully support. If you own a DVD you should be able to watch it where you want (almost everywhere) and make security copies. For those times you can use handbrake, as mentioned. The links and a link to a guide of making security copies of DVDs is in the Mac Beginner's Guide of which the link is in my sig.
