To use FaceID on table...set Alternate Face ID. When doing this, put phone down at your belly (touching your belly) and look down on it and do the FaceID setup.

Done. Now you can unlock your phone easily while on table.

I had to laugh at that one. Optical and ultrasonic in-display readers are widely available. Yet, LG chose to implement something that requires 2 hands to unlock.

But to be fair, Samsung ultrasonic fingerprint reader is far from perfect....actually quite bad! Even TheVerge conclusion for Samsung was to...copy FaceID! LOL

Optical reader can leave a mark on the display! FAIL.

Hmmm, it sure looks like Apple did the right thing with FaceID.

The problem with options is that your phone is only as secure as the weakest link. If Apple adds another bio-metric security option, and if it's less secure than FaceID, your phone is now less secure period. I'm truly sorry that FaceID isn't for everyone, but making our phones less secure isn't a viable option either. At least it doesn't seem to be for Apple, and for that I'm thankful.

Being able to hover my hand over the screen while the phone is laid flat on the table would be mush easier than having to lean over the phone or pick up the phone for Face ID.

I dislike having to enter the passcode when Face ID fails, which happens a few times a day.

If your waiting for Apple to implement what you're suggesting you'll be waiting for a long time. Faceid is the biometric security Apple will use for years, if you want Handid I suggest you purchase the device that has it as a feature not ask why Apple doesn't use it..

I don’t assume either way. I just don’t see why it wouldn’t be.

I’m pretty sure they will have Touch ID build into the screen soon anyway. 2 forms if security is better than one. More options is always good.

Let's see. LG is the ONLY one doing this "HandID". No one else...no one else seem to care. And LG has a very strong history of gimmicks that lead to no where. Remember LG G5?!

IF HandID cannot do purchases, then it is NOT as secure. Period. That's the litmus test for consumer biometrics.

TouchID under screen...like the optical? Ultrasonic? Well, as i mentioned above, those two options are not very good on other devices. And as far as i know, those are the ONLY two options for fingerprint under display.

It is not that people are sniffy...it is because Apple has shown time after time that occasionally, they do know what they are doing.

Did you see the link above? You put your hand over device...and then move your hand up in a slow deliberate motion and then wait a little.....THEN the phone unlocks. And that is assuming that it does so every time you do it, which i have my doubts.

Sorry, leaning over a tiny bit and swiping to unlock my XS is far quicker and easier to do.

I agree partially with your statement. Yes we as humans like to interact with our hands, but, with that being said more often than not we will have our phone in our hands. That being the case it is far easier to simply look at the phone(which you do any way)and have it unlock than to have to hold a hand up to it.

Sure there is an inconvenience in having to lean over your phone to unlock when it’s on a desk but those occasions don’t require a new biometric technology.

As has been pointed out by myself and a few others Face ID is the future for Apple, they have said so themselves. In their opinion it is more secure.

Why would they then reintroduce Touch ID, an inferior security technology? Putting it under the screen changes nothing.

Don’t forget that with LG way, i think that the scanner is ALWAYS on....to detect the hand. FaceID only turns on when you lift your phone or tap on it. Apple will NEVER go that route where the scanner is constantly on.

Yes, I like innovations and I like it when Apple take something and refine it.

They have done it before and they will do it again.

Normal finger print readers on android phones where awful until Apple came along and made Touch ID.

They WILL remove the notch one day and I'll be interested to see how they achieve that.

Face ID wasn't a solution it was evolution!

Apple could have easily saved themselves millions in R&D and put a form of Touch ID on the back of the iPhone - or on the power button to get an edge to edge screen but they didn't. What they did was release an as of yet unequalled form of bio-metric security in Face ID.

You can think or hope all you want but an under screen fingerprint scanner isn't going to happen. They're not that good any way, I've used the optical variant on a few of the top end androids and while they work, sometimes well, they lack consistency because of the incredibly small target press area.
