Can’t a long press do the overwhelming majority of what 3D Touch does?

It seems like 3D Touch is being deprecated already.
Are you sure? That would be tough on users like me who have adapted to the faster way. I believe XS and XS Max both have 3D Touch. Touchid has been deprecated not 3D Touch.

Other than upgraditis, I don’t know why someone with a perfectly good working iPhone X would want to upgrade to the Xs. The Max will be the bigger seller of the two, and I bet the Xr will outsell both.

I agree. I’m actually thinking about it. That Max is awesome.

But I’m just talking about the Xs

Unless you have money to burn, or damage your X, I don't see the real benefit for most people to upgrade an X to an Xs. Caveats, you buy yourself an Xs, then give the X to someone in the family to upgrade an older phone. Or you have use case of 2 phone numbers for 1 phone.

Which is probably why there are rumors about the Xs underperforming at start of pre-orders. The X from last year supplied a lot of demand for this form factor.

I, personally, like the form factor of the Xs. Maybe in a year or so I'll compare it to something similar in size, like that year's Xr. But after using a 7+ for over a year I didn't like the size.

Interestingly enough, gold colour and the 512GB capacity are apparently compelling enough features to upgrade from X to XS. I’ve been monitoring how fast the models sell out for the launch day pickup on the Apple Japan. Sure enough, gold models sold out quicker, followed by black, then silver. The first capacity to sell out was the 512GB one.

I know I’m a niche case, but my 256GB iPhone X is nearly full due to all the photos I’ve taken over the past several years. The photos have been backed up elsewhere, but I want to see them on the phone and I’m not going to use iCloud to do that. I was anticipating that a 512GB version would be available this year since Apple increases the capacity around every two years. And sure enough, there it was. XS was an instant buy for me.

Apple knows the Xs isn't a real upgrade. That's why it's not for sale anymore and has been removed from the store.

It's like when a music artist releases an entirely new greatest hits compilation with 1-2 new songs...the record label takes the original greatest hits album off the market because they want you to buy only the new one.

Worth upgrade ( 10 things )

1/ 6.5 oled
2/ A12 chip
3/ new shine gold
4/ camera improve
5/strereo speaker
6/ 2 sim ( travel )
7/ stainless steel frame ( better than chrome
8/ compatible ios 12
9/ new look
10/ $999 on hand ( act like rich :) )
I'll give you props from #1 - #7, then it falls flat. Still, 7 great reasons.

Hear me out,

I like to update my iPhone when the form factor changes.

I feel like with the iPhone X I get at least 2 years for that, now that we know the iPhone Xs is the same form factor.

BUT!

I usually miss a feature or 2 that I badly wish I had. For example, if I remember right the iPhone 6s had a 5MP selfie camera while the iPhone 6 was just a VGA(?).

BUT!

This year, there really isn’t anything remarkably better, those 1 or 2 amazing features that I would miss. I’ve heard others saying similar.

So spending fresh dollars on an iPhone Xs not only gets you potentially only ONE year of that form factor, but not a whole lot of better features either.

Hence, the lost year.
It’s an S year

The bigger screen from max is main reason I’m upgrading

If I wasn’t on annual upgrade then I wouldn’t upgrade from x to Xs if it was one size

For me, the technical jumps from last year's iPhones to the new iPhone models are not significant enough to upgrade. The smartphone industry is maturing and it's showing this year. Most non-technical users aren't impressed with technical specs; they are more concerned what can the phone do for me.
