Hmmm...if I were you, I'd ask for the giftcard money back, run put it in the bank and then use my debit card to buy it. Not sure about all states, but in some states they must give you the value of the giftcard back if you ask. Another idea is to use the giftcard online and see if that works for you.

Although, considering that all the stores seem to be out of stock with a waiting list, is this even an issue? By the time you get your hands on an iPad, this policy probably won't be in effect any longer!

I bought my iPad 3G 64GB with an Apple Gift Card from the online store. Didn’t have a problem at all.

See if the Apple Store will allow you to use the gift card for say 99% of the transaction and your debit/credit card for the other half.

I just ordered this from the Apple Store online with my gift card, and the order seemed to go through and get processed. But when I called to check my Apple gift card amount, it seems to have only subtracted the money for the accessories I ordered. I can't figure out what is going on.

This policy is beyond offensive. A month or so ago, I had asked for nothing but Apple gift cards for my birthday, precisely so I could buy an iPad. I fortunately found about about this restriction in time, but it's awful for those who didn't.

Because of this, I will never buy an Apple gift card again, for any reason. It's simply not worth it if the company disallows its use for certain popular products.

If you order with a credit card, apple only charges when the iPad has shipped. Chances are it works the same way for a gift card.

Not to worry.

They don’t charge the gift card until the iPad is prepared for shipment. They treat it the same as credit and debit cards.
