Google might have superior search results, but Yahoo has a superior homepage, especially if you love photography. Unlike Bing (which only refreshes the homepage image every day), Yahoo changes the homepage image every time you refresh the website. If you click on the watermark at the bottom right, it'll take you to the origins of the Flickr image and allow you to download it from there. It pulls all these images (5,289 as of now) from the "Yahoo Search Distribution" Flickr group. In fact, Yahoo used to actually own Flickr for many years. :)

I thought this might interest some people who weren't aware. Feel free to share any thoughts and opinions. Thank you for your attention.

one can only hope that yahoo has permission from all the photographers whose photos show up.

Yahoo ran flickr, then sold that or something, so they do have ownership of alot of photos, some are mine.

It’s a nice effect for sure but how good are the search results at the end of the day?

Yahoo really hit rock bottom when their servers were breached several years ago and they waited something like 2 years to notify users. For some reason Verizon bought them and then wanted to sell them.

I guess it wasn’t the entire division, though I thought I recall reading somewhere that the original purchase was on the overvalued side.

Was the point of this thread just that I should use yahoo for a search engine because they show me a different photo every time I visit??

I’m not really seeing what makes yahoo the perfect search engine

Oh, I guess that went nowhere.

I thought that some people here might have a taste for the nice images shown by other photography aficionados on Flickr. They're in fairly high resolution too. No watermark and very easy to download... :)
As Molly brought up, and I reiterate, it would be interesting to know if they do have the agreement and consent of each and every photographer whose image(s) appear on that page.......
I would assume so if the photos are in a specific group meant for Yahoo's search page.

Most people here wouldn’t download images by someone else without explicit permission.

there is also plenty of talent here sharing nice photos.

Long time ago I closed my Flickr account because they were not getting permission from photogs before using images elsewhere. No reason to believe their ethical behaviour has improved since then.

It might just be part of the terms and conditions, where no one else can use your content without consent, but Flickr and it’s parent company has no such limitation, being the content host. The downside to all these agreements is that they can change the terms over time, and what you have for rights might change along with these changes in parent ownership. You either get to blindly click okay when new terms are introduced, or you get your account suspended until you agree to terms (speaking in generalities here). It almost feels like if you are really concerned with rights to your own content online, you need to have a lawyer review the terms. As we find in other platforms (Google, Facebook, etc), use of your information beyond what you might think is quite common.

I used to have a Flickr account until someone was able to download one of my images and then pass it off as his own. A couple of people here knew who he was and they supported me when I confronted him. I don't make money from my images and I am flattered if someone wants a copy. I'm proud of my work and it is mine only. I'm not going to give anyone else rights to it either willingly or not. After that, I took everything offline. This is the only public forum where I post because I know I can trust the group.

I never liked Flickr, even when it was free and very popular.....I just had a bad feeling about it. These days I'm horrified at times to see people posting what are sometimes really outstanding images on FB / Instagram without any apparent concern that those images could easily be snagged and retained and later (mis)used either by FB itself or some dishonest member.
