Fair enough, the glass may have been defective but I am sure Apple is going to do their best to pin this on you. If it truly was/is defective I wouldn't even offer for the Applecare option. They should replace it for free and I wouldn't settle for less.

sometimes things happen that are out of your control and even though you're not at fault, it can be less of a headache to "split the difference" so-to-speak. If I were the OP, I would probably offer the same resolution as a catalyst.

It would just put a bad taste in my mouth if I spent that much money on a device like that only to have it be defective and I have to pay to get it fix. If it were several months later, I could see splitting the difference.

I vaguely remember hearing some stories about certain types of expensive glass randomly shattering for no reason. I think there were some news reports about peoples' glass deck tables for examples simply randomly shattering to bits. Not sure if that's related though.

Depends on where the thumb is. If my thumb was pointed up and more towards the edge of the device, then yes you are right. But it wasn't. It was held like you were trying to type in portrait mode. You can tell by the print on the picture. Also, since I was slightly reclined, the iPad was more in a vertical position, not horizontal to the ground.

Try it yourself on your iPad if you have one (and if you dare!) and you can see where the stress point is.

You look like a strong guy, one who could quite possible hold the ipad in one hand between your thumb and index finger only.

This would explain the stress point and if the glass is not tempered well or micro-cracked as mentioned above, I can see how it might have cracked.

I believe you; my only recommendation for the future is whenever something happens that is a-typical, dont give up your evidence. Take it to corporate first.

Maybe you have some coverage via Discover.

The other approach, which I will get flamed for, would have been to just call Apple and but the AppleCare+. Then gone to the store. It was very likely you would get pushback at the store level. They are predisposed to blame the customer in these cases.

Hindsight is 20/20...so keep pressing corporate (in the nicest way).

So I'm on my recliner reading with my new iPad, reading it in book form with the smart cover on and folded around back.

I'm about to turn in for the night and take my left hand off the iPad to bring the smart cover around and I hear the crack of glass.

The screen literally shattered in my hand, below my right thumb. You can still seem my thumb print.

I did not apply any crazy pressure to this thing, it's never been dropped or even looked at cross eyed. I just made an appointment for the Genius Bar tomorrow. Hopefully they don't expect me to pay for a defective piece of glass. I'm a bit sick to my stomach actually.

Everyone can act like it’s a made up story or beyond their belief but I swear mine just did exactly the same thing. Right where my right thumb was on the side of the screen as I held it in portrait mode. Mine is basically new like yours and doesn’t have the first scratch on it and you can tell it’s never been dropped or out of its case. I just happen to google to see if it had happen to anyone else because I was like in shell shock. It’s a new iPad Air 2021. I’m eager to see if they replaced or fixed yours though. I imagine I just keep following the thread and I’ll answer my own question. At first it’s shocking then it’s upsetting because these baby’s aren’t so cheap. Anyway, that for your post. I don’t feel so alone now and like none is gonna believe I did nothing to it….but maybe they will see.

it's because you're using a case that was released as "for new ipad" but was really a guess or just lucky fit. that type of case puts quite a bit of stress on small areas of the corners of the glass, causing a fracture. what brand of case is is, because that is your culprit... greedy case makers rushing to market before product is ready, NOT APPLE
I like that theory. If it is pressed into a too small case, there could be stress on the glass, and just a little movement in the right area could shatter it. Not saying that this happened in the OP's case, but nice theory, anyway.

I've had a tempered glass screen protector spider before my eyes on a overseas flight (10+ hours). I was reading a book on my iPhone 8+ (I believe) and BAM, the thing just spidered. It wasn't in a stressful case, I wasn't touching it, for some reason it just cracked like I had hit it with a rock - I even heard it pop. Figured it was the air pressure changing or something? I imagine a thin cheap tempered glass screen protector isn't anything like an iPad screen but... having owned iPads since the iPad 3, I've never, ever, ever had an iPad screen crack and I've sat on my iPads before accidentally (I'm 230 pounds, not a small guy).

Wow, a nine year old thread resiurrected :)
Crackingate is back when you least expected it. IMO iPad 3 has some solid glass, not a single scratch without ever putting a protector on it. I still keep it because it looks good, nostalgia and children visits.
