It is out of warranty and I do not have AppleCare. Worse yet, I do not have $649 to have it replaced.

Does anyone know of good 3rd party repair places that will be less expensive to replace it?

Thanks

I realize how this is going to sound BUT.... you could probably google it and find a 3rd party repair shop. Those places are a dime a dozen for iPhone repair.

I don’t know a shop that would replace it with a similar panel.

OP good luck and let us know what you ended up doing with the iPad please!

How bad is it cracked? You could always sell it to someone who is willing to pay 649$ to get it replaced... I wouldn't recommend going to a third party... imo.

Even 3rd party that's all going to set you back ~$400.00.

Not quite as bad as Apple's $649.00, but painful none the less.

I'd ask myself if it's worth it or should I look at alternatives.

I just replaced a screen for a gen 6 that my son laid on top of a pile of Legos and then a kid jumped on it. It is actually not that difficult. I used guitar picks and hot air soldering station. It took minutes to get the old glass off, and then a bit of time to remove the old glue with an Exacto knife and some rubbing alcohol. The new glass is installed within minutes, check your connectors BEFORE gluing it back together - I had to do it twice. And I pressed for a day under books. You buy the new glue strip. Looks like new. Cost was $40. The larger glass may be more expensive. (The iFixit iOpener did not work for me, but a fine nozzle on the hot air soldering gun with fast movements worked wonder.)

Holy crap! I’m surprised that iPad survived.

WTF were they thinking?!?

You can probably get the screen repaired by apple instead of getting the whole device replaced.

Personally wouldn’t recommended 3rd party repairers

Apple doesn’t repair nor replace iPad Pro screens. If someone doesn’t have Apple Care they have to pay for a Replacement device. Apple Care is worth the money for iPad pros. I made the mistake of not buying it on my first pro. Learned the hard way that Apple doesn’t replace pro screens.

You might try:

Bought the latest 12.9 IPP back in December, 2018. Was at home doing dialysis. Turned to pick up my phone and the IPP (in a protective cover case, opened and flipped back for use) caught the edge of my elbow. It made one full axis rotation and landed flat down on a hardwood floor. height about 3 1/2 feet. Caused a thin hairline crack running diagonally. You have to rotate it ‘just so’ in direct light to see the crack or you can feel it by running the pencil across the screen.

Didn’t have AppleCare since I rarely leave my house. Apple quoted me $849 to replace the screen. Everything still works 100% and since I don’t intend on selling it, I used that $ and bought a 9.7” iPad/pencil as a backup just in case.

I’ll buy the new 12.9 IPP whenever it comes out and give the damaged one to my sister, even though she doesn’t use the Surface Go/pencil I gave her a year ago.

If my IPP had been rendered non useable, well that would have been a pickle (repair or buy a new one to replace).

why would they when they can pay 649 and get one without crack screen.

Why would they sell it? Well.. apparently 649$ is too steep of a price to repair it. I was just making a suggestion.

OP could sell it and later down the line, they can wait for Spring to get the 4th generation.

no, i meant why would someone spend say 200 buck on buying it, then spend another 650 to repair it, its cheaper just buying a used one from swappa or ebay.

I asked the OP first.. how bad is it? Reason being... perhaps, a potential buyer would find the crack not that big of deal.

Some people are fine with cracked displays.. as long as it functions. I know for me, it would bother me. I have a friend of mine who has a cracked phone and they use it without any concern.

They might not have thought about it much but then that’s part of childhood. Always look to the parent who leaves something delicate out there to be destroyed.

I don’t believe there are actual screens from Apple available in the wild. I just had my iPad Pro 12.9 Gen3 screen replaced. $439 + tax.

It took 3 screens to get a good one. First one had a dead spot I found the day after repair. The 2nd one had a distortion on the screen. The 3rd one so far seems OK. They just did not clean up some of the glue.

I had 2 quotes via Yelp. The other place said they could do it but they would need 3-4 days to get parts.

Based on what I have seen on their YouTube vids and Louis Rossmann’s vid I would try iPad Rehab.

Where in this thread has the OP even indicated it fell?
