So im selling my iPhone 3G
Im getting a bunch of scams. I was just wondering if this is one as everything seems legit until he sends this "I'm supposed to be back yesterday but unfortunately i didn't make it again cos a meeting that was supposed to be held on Monday was postponed to Monday next week. however, i desperately do you need the phone.Actually it's for my daughter, she really need one cos her birthday is coming up on Tuesday. but she's currently outside the states with some evangelists for an evangelism in the West Africa.maybe since i can't meet up again to continue this transaction in person, i was wondering if you can please help me ship it to her since her birthday is on Tuesday and i won't be back till after the meeting on Monday to ship it to her myself, i will really appreciate the help. a payment of $490 will be made available for you soon for both the phone and shipping expenses.Let me know."
and i reply saying that after i receive payment i will ship and he replys " ok then which means of monetary transfer would you prefer (paypal or a money order) if paypal then send me a paypal money request for $490 to bergen.skift@hotmail.com but if a money order then send me your name and an address for the payment to be made available for you before you ship.you will get the complete mailing address once payment had been made.let me know.thanks"

I noticed the bad grammar and he cant meet up in person. Just how does a money order work? I know you have to go to a post office to pick it up or something.

It's a scam. DO NOT fall for it. The "I can't meet in person and the one I'm buying it for is out of country" is the red flag. They want you to ship it out of the states so any insurance you might have is voided.

I'm selling a new pair of V-Moda Vibe Duos on Craigslist.

A potential buyer wants to buy them from me, and he is willing to mail me cash for them. Once I receive the cash, he told me to ship the headphones. Once he receives them, he told me he would then send me the cash for the shipping (I would imagine it would only cost $3-4 to mail across LA). Obviously, I would have to provide my address in order for him to mail the cash first.

Am I missing something here? Should I agree to this, or should I be suspicious?

/Sorry to threadjack, but I didn't see the need to start another similar thread

If he pays with paypal whats the difference between this person and any other?

I would suggest that you photograph the phone while on and make copies of the s/n and IMEI codes from the box.

Send fedex with insurance and a signature required.

If his story seems to much...skip and sell the phone on ebay.

You're getting $490...that seems high but if you can get it more power to you.

Just tell him to send $4 additional to cover shipping...Dont see the need to do 2 transactions.

to OP

it's a Scam just trust me on this. if you need it broken down I will do it but I promise you 100% it's a scam

Surely if you have and they have Paypal I go that route I don't like giving my address to strangers. and possibility of counterfeit! or the money getting lost  or your headphones.

Yeah, I was thinking about all of those possibilities. I can check to see if the cash is counterfeit before I ship the headphones.

But what if:
  • I can provide an old address, and the mail will then forward to my new address (I moved recently, and signed up for mail forwarding)
  • My old property manager can hold it for me and call me when he gets it
  • Both the cash and the headphones could be mailed with tracking

I don't trust Paypal. I've read too many stories from sellers of buyers calling Paypal and pretending that they were scammed. Paypal ends up putting a hold on the money or reversing the transaction. Then, I'd be out the money and the headphones.

anything that involves not meeting up in real life and shipping on craigslist.... just dont do it.

always meet at a safe place near your/their house. (starbucks, etc)

if you are buying something from someone, ask to see it and mess with it real quick, make sure it checks out okay (not a fake iphone, broken, etc.), before you hand over the money (if hes a lil wary just tell him "look it, I'm GOING to buy this from you if this is the real thing"... and yes you are honest, so you will give him the money, even if you have to open the box when its never been opened)

I've had nothing but success (no scams whatsoever) on craigslist, following common sense guidelines.

Yeah, that's how I would normally do it too. I think I'm going to pass on this sale. I'm sure someone else will make an offer eventually.

Yeah thanks guys, 4 out 5 people reply to me saying "is your item still available." Which is a obvious scam. :(

It's a scam!!!! Don't do it. Take cash only. Even with PayPal they can do a chargeback from a stolen credit card which you will have to cover.

Money orders can also be faked.

Yea definite scam, I have been through it before and on ebay. Some guy wanted to buy my old ATT Fuze for his sons bday, he offered me 600 bucks and I was only asking 300 buy it now lol. Sent him a paypal money request like why not I'll see what happens. So I get a really official looking email from paypal saying the money is on hold or something until I send the tracking #....long story short I sent the guy a dildo covered in dog crap.

+1!

Fake money orders and cashiers' checks are a huge problem nowadays.

Because you had a dildo just sitting around huh? I am sure you went out of your way to do ALL that.

Anyways - Craigslist is abound with scammers. It is increasing too. If you have to ask here if it's a scam, 99% of the time - it is. Don't deal with ANYONE wanting you to remove, hold, cash checks, send the item first or whatever.

Not sure why people don't use common sense on these things. It would save quite a few people from problems. Then again, if you get taken - I really don't feel bad for you for lack of common sense.

My Craigslist Rules:

Local only. Meet in person at a neutral public location (if item is small enough) Cash only.

Just sell it on ebay....

Only accept bidding from users with positive feedback....

Only accept bidders from inside your state/country....

Only post (insured of course) when payment has cleared...

you can't really go wrong

Run Forrest, Run!!!

I had some concert tickets on Craigslist, and I got the same response: "Is your item still available? I replied yes, and they asked me to ship them to their daughter in Africa. Yeah, right.

Actually when I was google'n to find out if it was a scam I found a huuuuge thread somewhere about it and a lot of people were sending dildo's, I went the extra mile getting my neighbour's dog's crap. Want a few pics? I put them on the forum where it was being discussed. And yes I went through the trouble of getting one, but it wasn't much trouble cuz the sex shop is like 2 miles from my office.

I was selling my current phone also and just got this email
"Thanks for your mail,i am buying the item for my son who school in oversea.i will add $40 for shipping,i will have do it local transaction but i am out of town presently...so you can get me back with your paypal email account so i can pay now.hope to hear from you soon
best regard "

I would never ship it in the first place before I got the money. But if your buying one they would expect you to pay first. SCAM
