crap, I broke something

So in a half-drunken stupor I dropped/threw my MBA on a mattress. The problem was that it was 'open', with the screen at its normal up position of maybe 135-degrees-or-so from the keyboard. Upon landing on the mattress, something in the hinge literally snapped (it sounded like a plasticky snap) and the screen went all the way backwards until it was flat - think 180 degree angle between keyboard and screen.

Nothing seems to be malfunctioning yet. It's working just as before, except now there's a bigger tilt-back angle for the screen... I can tilt it back literally as much as I want.

My question to you guys, assuming someone else has done this, is whether in the long run it's going to bite me in the ass. Because something definitely broke, I'm not sure whether what broke was 'important'.

And yeah I feel kinda dumb right now.

well it certainly can lead to issues with the connection of the display to the video card, which is what you'll have to be careful to avoid any extra strain on that.

Seriously, there have been others who have posted about either receiving Airs w. 180º screen tilt and some demos in stores with the anomaly. They all seem to work fine so if it still works and you don't hear anything rattle inside, you may be okay.

Nearly every time I read this forum I am astonished at how easy it seems for some people to BRAZENLY and out-right LIE in order to get something done for nothing.

He broke it--- go in, admit it and PAY the rightful amount to fix it.

I must agree with HotAir.

This is not just a question of morals. By returning the MBA claiming a manufacturing defect is only driving up the cost of Apple Care for the rest of us. Macs are expensive enough as it is, let's not give Apple more statistical rationale to raise prices further.

Exactly the same happened to me just few minutes ago!!! Not being drunk or whatever, just my MBA landed on the bed and cracked and i got a tiny finger-like plastic particle next to the wide-open MBA, as if this particle was the only thing that made the screen 135 degree and not 180.

So, if you're gonna bring it to Apple, please, tell, if they say it's (un)important, because i just don't know what i want - on one hand i like it open 180 degrees!, but on the other somewhat afraid if it will loose with the time, or some other way 'bite in the ass' as you say .

Also it may be not really convenient, as the screen on Air is quite heavy and every time you put it too hard on a surface, it now opens wide.

...Then don't be so rough with your Mac..... (thinking about Mac abuse makes me cry)....

And I do agree that if you broke it, you should pay for it. Aside from morals though; explain it to your local Mac bods and you never know they may take pity on you and be able to fix it gratis (never hurts to ask?)

Morality certainly does NOT come from stupidy, it comes from the ability to be courageous and do the right thing even if you can't comprehend how in the long run it is actually in your best interests.

You are the type of person who would knowingly buy stolen goods and rationalize it by saying 'they should have protected it better'.

Because shared ethics is one of the building blocks of society. 'Pushing' ethics is one of the core reasons societies exist; without them, the social contract falls apart and humans end up acting like animals... which sadly, some of us already do.

I just want to say that your sig quote and being a stock holder is quite ironic

If it weren't for having to please stock holders with absolute profitability, we would probably have dedicated graphics in the Mac mini and MacBook.
