So in a half-drunken stupor I dropped/threw my MBA on a mattress. The problem was that it was 'open', with the screen at its normal up position of maybe 135-degrees-or-so from the keyboard. Upon landing on the mattress, something in the hinge literally snapped (it sounded like a plasticky snap) and the screen went all the way backwards until it was flat - think 180 degree angle between keyboard and screen.

Nothing seems to be malfunctioning yet. It's working just as before, except now there's a bigger tilt-back angle for the screen... I can tilt it back literally as much as I want.

My question to you guys, assuming someone else has done this, is whether in the long run it's going to bite me in the ass. Because something definitely broke, I'm not sure whether what broke was 'important'.

And yeah I feel kinda dumb right now.

well it certainly can lead to issues with the connection of the display to the video card, which is what you'll have to be careful to avoid any extra strain on that.

The good side of the grass.
I like this mod. I'll have a cocktail and give it a try!;)

Seriously, there have been others who have posted about either receiving Airs w. 180º screen tilt and some demos in stores with the anomaly. They all seem to work fine so if it still works and you don't hear anything rattle inside, you may be okay.

Just get it fixed. You can claim it's a manufacturing defect and they'll fix it for free. There are some tiny wires that run through the..... I believe right hinge, so why risk accidentally cutting those?

Nearly every time I read this forum I am astonished at how easy it seems for some people to BRAZENLY and out-right LIE in order to get something done for nothing.

He broke it--- go in, admit it and PAY the rightful amount to fix it.

Is that so hard? Sheeeeesh.

Why do people like yourself insist on pushing their morals on others? I'm not interested in what you have to regurgitate on the subject.

I suppose you also believe in intelligent design, right?

I must agree with HotAir.

This is not just a question of morals. By returning the MBA claiming a manufacturing defect is only driving up the cost of Apple Care for the rest of us. Macs are expensive enough as it is, let's not give Apple more statistical rationale to raise prices further.

Seconded ! If you break it, you pay for it.

Exactly the same happened to me just few minutes ago!!! Not being drunk or whatever, just my MBA landed on the bed and cracked and i got a tiny finger-like plastic particle next to the wide-open MBA, as if this particle was the only thing that made the screen 135 degree and not 180.

So, if you're gonna bring it to Apple, please, tell, if they say it's (un)important, because i just don't know what i want - on one hand i like it open 180 degrees!, but on the other somewhat afraid if it will loose with the time, or some other way 'bite in the ass' as you say :) .

Also it may be not really convenient, as the screen on Air is quite heavy and every time you put it too hard on a surface, it now opens wide.

...Then don't be so rough with your Mac..... (thinking about Mac abuse makes me cry)....

And I do agree that if you broke it, you should pay for it. Aside from morals though; explain it to your local Mac bods and you never know they may take pity on you and be able to fix it gratis :) (never hurts to ask?)

:)

Because these people screwing over companies make the products cost more for me.

Because the people screwing over companies make customer service worse for me.

Because the people screwing over companies make companies more apt to reject a valid claim assuming I'm lying.

Because the people screwing over companies impact their profitability and I am a stock holder and thus owner and thus they are screwing ME over.

Did your Momma ever teach you right from wrong? Is it OK to steal from YOU?

/edit Oh Geez. I just read your intelligent design tag. Morality does not have to come from religion. I am not religious and I still know right from wrong. Without it our whole society collapses. Morality certainly does NOT come from stupidy, it comes from the ability to be courageous and do the right thing even if you can't comprehend how in the long run it is actually in your best interests.

You are the type of person who would knowingly buy stolen goods and rationalize it by saying 'they should have protected it better'.

You disgust me.

/edit #2: This is the problem with kids born after 1983 (the year the last Star Wars film released); they don't understand the difference between good and evil.

Because shared ethics is one of the building blocks of society. 'Pushing' ethics is one of the core reasons societies exist; without them, the social contract falls apart and humans end up acting like animals... which sadly, some of us already do.

Has nothing to do with "greater than" or a sense of superiority.

I resent it when I have to pay more for my AppleCare because you lied to get Apple (and by extension the rest of its customers) to pay for damage that is your own fault.

Next time you leave your window open, I'll just stroll in and take your Mac. After all, you think it's OK to steal from me, so I should think it's OK to steal from you.

^^^^ Nail on head. So is it George Lucas's fault for not getting the next movies out in time to teach the kids right from wrong.

I just want to say that your sig quote and being a stock holder is quite ironic ;)

If it weren't for having to please stock holders with absolute profitability, we would probably have dedicated graphics in the Mac mini and MacBook.
