My Mac (2014 5K iMac, well-specced, all SSD storage) is really acting up since updating to 10.15.1. Tough to say exactly what's happening, but whenever my screen goes dark (I guess the Mac is going to sleep) I have trouble Waking it. Keyboard taps, trackpad taps, etc. don't have any effect. Sometimes the next thing I'll see is a multi-language error message saying something like 'your Mac restarted because of an issue, press any key to continue to start up or wait a few moments' or some such.

Every maybe 1 of 5 times the Mac will wake, or continue to boot up (a pain as I have all sorts of multiple desktop spaces with apps and documents in each kept open at all times, so I have to set that stuff up each time).

Some times I have to hold down the power button to break the cycle. And some times I've even had to resort to physically unplugging it.

I just ran disk utility and it says everything is fine. But obviously something's not right.

Anyone else?

For now I've set the Eco preferences to just leave everything on all the time, screen included.

Yesterday evening I have updated to 10.15.1. After wake my nMP got a black screen with the Kernel Panic (what you call th multi-language error is a Kernel Panic).

So we are two. Never got a Kernel Panic before (10.15 or High Sierra).

Well, misery loves company. Thanks for posting. I guess I could try to repair permissions from recovery mode (was surprised not to see it in disk utility...) and see if that helps. Any other suggestions?

I don't have at the moment. With mine I will try to wake it up some other times and see what happen.

Maybe if it will be more frequent an SMC reset. But sure in the case it's a software caused problem.

Lots of people have luck with this sort of problem when they re-install the update with a standalone installer, which you can do by downloading from here.

I have already installed it from a standalone installer. I never install any update from the panel inside the OS.

I always do the update via the 'offline' installer.

Back from the office my Mac has done a kp during my absence and restarted... Now I've tried to re-install 10.15.1 update.

I run it from a samsung 960evo nvme driver that didn't show any problem with 10.15.

Another Kernel Panic two minutes ago, just 30sec. after re-installing 10.15.1.

‘Wow. Saw the other thread too. Sorry didn’t know what a KP was when I started this thread. Maybe the mods can merge the two threads?

Havent had any issues since preventing my Mac from going to sleep or the screen turning off. I don’t prefer this as a long term solution however.

Mine had KP also in use... not only in sleep or after a sleep... And that's sure a 10.15.1 problem because I didn't have any problem with 10.15 I'm using now.

Mine may have been "in use" though I was always away from my desk so I assumed it was tied to going to sleep or the screen turning off.

Still, no KPs since changing all the Eco settings to 'never go to sleep or dark."

Mmm... I use sleep all the time with my machine... I never shutdown it but I'm not always in front of it so I can't have it on all the time.

Mine continues to be okay since turning off all Eco settings. I don't want this to be my long term solution though.

I'm back to Mojave at the moment. I own two ssd disk, the original shipped and 1tb nvme. I'm on Mojave with the nvme with no problems at all at the moment. I can't live with a non stable machine during my work and also without the sleep working.

When they'll release .2 I will give it a try.

Hmm. You may be onto something. My iMac came with a 2TB Fusion drive, but when the HDD died I replaced it with a 2TB SSD, specifically a 2TB OWC Mercury EXTREME Pro 6G SSD. I wonder if something in Catalina doesn't like something about some SSDs...

Memories of SCSI firmware and drivers, compatibility of disk drive firmware were behind us ... was premature

With 3rd party SSD PCIe were OWC and others caught off guard?

Your SCSI firmware/drivers comment gives me shivers! ??

Maybe I'll reach out to OWC...

It crashed both with the original Apple ssd and with the nvme.

maybe the external thunderbolt disks but I’m not able to read the kernel panic log.

Well I called OWC and predictably they blame Apple. Suggested some very basic things e.g. start in Safe Mode and see how it goes. But mostly suggested contacting Apple and hoping for 10.15.2 to fix it...

Yeah I also think it's a 10.15.1 problem. Because no problem at all with 10.15.

Have a look:

Interesting that you only have the issue with external monitors attached. I assume the SSD in your laptop is OEM...yes?

Having the same issue on my 2015 rMBP 15". Intermittent lockups and occasional kernel panics with issues at wake. A glance at the crashlog indicates that "com_apple_driver_AppleUSBCardReaderInterfaceNub::setPowerState" is the line which caused the panic. I'm disabling the AppleUSBCardReader kext for now

There are some reports around where 10.15.2 beta solve the problem.
You can see them in Apple support forum.
