Hi.. first time poster on MacRumors..
Like Fedge, I received my crucial ram in the giant crates too.
I ordered the 2x512 for $207.99 last week on friday.
My MP came with Crucial ram and not Nanya. The ram i bought from crucial is identical. even the model numbers on the stickers are identical to apple's stock ram.
As of this writing, central time 1210am Sept 7, the prices for the Crucial 2x512mb kit is $308.99.
Thats more than Apple's prices! looks like apple may have the best deal now... good thing I didn't hesitate.

Fedge, I'm betting that the trays we received, the last pair was then sold as retail (like to us) and the other pieces were installed into MP's that other people bought.

Big Trays

I received a 512 pair from crucial today. (~200 pricing, thankfully.)

Exactly the same packaging as reported above, including the helpful "EMPTY TRAY" sticker on the empty tray.

I'd guess: they don't have proper singleton plastic packs for these big heat sinky things yet, and someone decided it would be too cheesy to send them out wrapped in newspaper, so they're reusing the bulk packs from the supplier until they get the right plastic bits to repackage them.

Maybe that's why the price went up... they have to underwrite a new form factor of little plastic packages :)

I'm beating myself over the fact I didn't buy from crucial before my Mac Pro came. The price back then was just under $200 but now it's even more expensive than memory from the Apple store!

Holy $#!%. What's up with that price increase? I literally just booted up from installing my 512MBx2 kit from Crucial. I paid $199 for it. That was a nice price break from Apple's. I'm glad I ordered when I did! I hope it comes down soon, though. I can live with 2GB for as long as it takes.

BTW, I got the same packaging. Most unusual.

Don't Buy From Crucial!

People, Crucial are a bunch of crooks. They use a practice known as "dynamic pricing," where they will charge you more for an item based on them tracking your movements throughout their website. It's a dishonest practice, and anyone who pays Crucial is supporting not only dishonest people, but also the despicable practice. Read more here: Dynamic Pricing on Crucial

That's an interesting theory but that $300 price appears even when it's linked (ie, no cookies involved). I think it's that Apple is asking Crucial to price-fix.

datamem.com sticks show even less heat dissipation potential than the various Kingston/etc. RAM.

looks might be a bit deceiving.
i just went down and bought 4 gigs.
with that i got a great price, and a 10 year warranty.
also, datamem has been providing awesome aftermarket ram for
apple machines for quite some time. google them and you'll read nothing but positive reviews. i too was skeptical as it seemed like a thin wafer but
these guys know what they're doing. plus a 10 year no questions asked guarantee. i dont think any other ram manufacturer could touch that with a 10foot pole.

Videographer,

Could you please tell me how I can obtain/download and run MemtestOSX? I'm new to the OS-X OS as I'm coming from the PC world. I've got 2x512MB FBDIMMS from Crucial coming in tomorrow.

So I waited too long while waiting for my Mac Pro and RAM prices went nuts.

I sold my Power Mac G5 now and REALLY want some RAM, 1GB isn't enough. So I'm gonna bite the bullet and buy some.

I normally buy Crucial RAM for my MACs but price wise are more expensive. Was looking to hear opionions of the RAM if anyone has any of these, or if anyone knows of a cheaper place for quality Mac Pro Memory.

http://www.crucial.com/store/partre...+Pro&partno=CT579442&ipartno=CT2KIT12872AP667
2 x 1GB $538.74 with tax and shipping

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/53FB1GD2GBK/
2 x 1GB $477.94 with tax and shipping

http://www.transintl.com/store/category.cfm?Category=2648&RequestTimeOut=500
2x 1GB $458 not including tax and shipping

http://www.smalldog.com/product/41151
2 x 1GB $401.00 with tax and shipping (questionable heat sink)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820134085
2 x 1GB $386.08 with tax and shipping (questionable heat sink)

Opionions from anyone using any of this RAM would be great. Any other options would also be great.

Sell thiere 2x1gb ram for $400 with proper heatsink
althought i dunno if there any good
anyone have any experince with them?

They look like they have the right kind of heat sinks but still pricey. They don't say how much the shipping is, and they are in CA so I'd have to deal with tax. Good find though, at least the heatsinks look good.

That crucial ram is 489.99 on my screen....what a load of crooks they are.

I ended up getting a 2x1gig kit from microcenter for 450(if my memory serves me correctly). They have a special Apple center located inside of microcenter.

Crucial shows 499.99 when I look it up, and then my prices included + tax and shipping.

So far for me anyways the OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other...g/53FB1GD2GBK/ memory looks like the cheapest since its the only one I can afford sales tax and have minimal shipping. The heatsinks are a different style than Apples but I assume are still effective. Anyone have any errors with this memory?

I've had flawless results with 2GB of the OWC. Ran the full monty mem test for a day- ZERO errors or corrections.

Heatsink design seems intelligent to me...

Thank you for the heads up. I think I'll go ahead and order them, best deal I could find after looking at RAM all day :)

They use the same Samsung FB-DIMMs that is also used on some of the memory Apple sells. The heatsinks are actually the beefiest compared to the rest including the Apple ones. Barefeats tested them and found it to run a bit cooler than the other memory. They said it also looks like it has the most surface area which probably helps in the cooling.

Based on that, I bought a 2GB kit. It works well and is currently the best memory deal for ones with the proper heatsink.
