Well got the crucial ram an hour ago and put it in the mac pro. Works no problem. I put some ram heatsinks on it and its good to go. Still testing it though. Will report if there is a problem.

any problems yet? and is your machine still "silent" or have the fans kicked up to cool the Crucial RAM?

any luck with Nanya?

No not yet. Probably won't hear anything back til Monday since it is the weekend. I will keep you posted.

I also asked if there is anywhere to buy there modules here in the states. If anyone else form the UK or Austrailia wants to know, let me know and I will ask them.

In the meantime I am going to try and find some heatsinks that are similar. And try to find a reseller of Nanya chips.

I really think those big heatsinks are necessary which the other manufactuers are figuring out. I don't think Nanya would throw those on for no reason.

Also, I really don't have a way to verfiy that the heatsinks are a Nanya thing and not an Apple thing. Considering the placement of the sticker in the PowerMax image, it looks as if it is a Nanya thing.

i purchased this ram from newegg. the ram is here but i am waiting on my machine (tuesday delivery).i bought four of them to insure i am not limiting the bandwidth as anandtech states might be the case if four dimm's aren't filled. i will remove the stock 512 dimm's and replace with these. i have a couple of thoughts about the heat discipation those being the current sinks will work fine, or i will cool them activley with a quiet fan powered by the optical drive molex's, or i should certialy be able to make - fabricate a sink in my shop using the stock sinks as a guide. is see that on the pdf from intel that these chips are supported on the chipset so if i have any problems it should simply be a matter of cooling them properly. if in the end i am thwarted then i will run the stock 512 dimm's until a suitable sink hits the market which i will the attach to the kingston ram. should be an interseting week.

I've put these on the spreader itself. It is working OK so far.

It would acutally work better if you had a copper heat spreader and aluminum heatsinks. As copper conducts heat faster than aluminum but dissipates slower. While Aluminum does the opposite.

so get copper spreaders and take of the aluminum ones that come on the crucial ram, and then put the copper spreader on them and then some aluminum sinks? like these

Yeah that set actually includes the copper heatspreader as well as the aluminum heatsinks. Only thing is the FBDIMMS are a little different. So that heatspeader may not fit properly.

From the manufactuers I have found so far that are selling FBDIMMS which include: Apacer, Nanya, Kingston, AData, Smart, Crucial, ATP. Only Nanya is using such large heatsinks.
OWC also added heatsinks, but they are a bit pricey.

Expect others to follow, or use OWCs heatsink supplier.

---

Remember, it isn't life extension of the DIMMs ... but the DIMMs really do run slower if they get too hot.

But I don't know how much I would trust stick on heatsinks here, since tape tends to fail in AZ. Clip ons are best in this area.

can you please let us know if those kingston 2gbs fom newegg work?? i need to find a cheaper place to buy 12gb than apple's ridiculous prices.

well i suppose i could pull the heat sinks off of the apple ram and just put them on the two gig set until someone can find aftermarket heat sinks that work.

Has anyone actually seen the DMS Mac Pro RAM? Unlike Crucial they still have the FB-DIMMS that the Mac Pro use,up on there website, but yet no pictures. So does anyone know if they have the massive heat sinks that the stock Apple RAM has or something similar,as OWC does?

would you tape those to the heat spreader or on each of the modules on the DIMM?

I would assume you would be better off attaching them to the chips themselves but I dunno I'm certainly not an expert in this field. Hoping for off the shelf solution by the time my BTO Mac Pro arrives.

The heatsinks come equipped with thermal tape on them (most likely 3M). That is how they are attached.

18004MEMORY.com has said that they have recieved the Apple specifications for heatsinks and will start manufacturing RAM for them promptly. They're an inexpensive and high-quality supplier.
