Yeah, but for best usability 30s is the goal.
Also I hope other viewers can see this and able to make decision themselves.
It really depends on the audio file you're trying to use. Some sound fine within 20 seconds, some sound fine with 40. Really can't generalize.

+1 on others making the decision themselves. Another pro tip - if you're trying to use an audio file on a mac, you can use QuickTime to trim and export it.

A bit of a bump... I just wiped my phone yesterday and reinstalled everything. Now I cant drag and drop my m4r ringtone into iTunes. I also tried the copy and paste method some said works, but this doesn't work for me either.

I know I can use iTunes to trim music and convert the file formats, but one of the tones is not available as a song on iTunes and really do want this as a ring tone.

Is there any other method I can use to move these m4r's to the ring tones list?

Years ago I created a ring tone from the introductory music to Star Wars. Still use it. Get lots of stares when my phone rings in public.

I have used The Imperial March as my ring tone for several years. I get stares as well, but I never think my phone is ringing and it turns out to be someone else’s.

I created a m4r to use as an alert when I get a message. I did it by changing the 2 second clip to an AAC, finding the file and changing the suffix to m4r,
I opened music on my mac, plugged in the iPhone 13 with iOS 17, and the chose move to device. The file does not get moved to my iPhone.

Why?

Hmmm... I'm using iCloud Match for my Music, so that might be of some influence for me, but if I drag and drop a ringtone to Music with the iPhone selected in the sidebar, the ringtone automatically gets imported to the phone. Doesn't show in the Music window when done but does appear under Sounds on the phone.

OK - My message tone shows up in in ringtones folder with iMazing. I bought a alert tone (Minions)for $1.29 as a test, and selected it to be the default text tone. It did show up there. I then switched to an Apple stock tone. When I did that I could not see the one I purchased anymore. It was not in the stock tone list nor the purchased list.

How can I select it?

Just upgraded to iOS 17 and can see my custom tones (none purchased) under Ringtone, but none of them show up under Text Tone, but is still using the one I had under iOS 16 (just sent myself a text to make sure).

ADD: bug also reported in 17.0 RC thread.

Does it work my messages.app only or do you also get the custom sound instead of this ear piercing DING that defaults for apps such as instagram, telegram, etc ?

Or, you could have used iMazing and done it with drag-and-drop. Ringtone management is a free function.

thank you

I just did that, but it only shows up in ringnotes, but doesnt show up in notifications/sms sounds

are you able to set your own notification sounds ?

Might be a bug. Another thread with similar symptoms.

damn, just got that

I should have done it while I was still on ios 16....now there's no way to do it

and I feel like this isnt something apple will care much about, let alone provide an update with a fix for it

I hoped an update would solve that. It seems, however, that Apple is again not making it easy to step outside their domain.
