Any reason why you don't use iCloud for backup? I recently switched to that but is there some reason I should switch back?

Personal preference really. It's faster to backup and it actually backs up more settings than the iCloud, stuff most everyone wouldn't ever notice. Mainly just because it's faster, not sure what else to say.

I always have to use the cable - whenever I try to do wi-fi sync, the phone (which initially shows up in iTunes) disappears and a message comes up saying the phone couldn't be found... :(

I manually sync every month or two to move videos over. I haven't found a way to transfer those wirelessly since photo stream is obviously only photos.

When you use the iCloud as a backup, it effects how iTunes syncs with your iDevice. To fix your problem, just tell iTunes to backup to the computer. Then make the changes you want to make (for syncing purposes), then sync. After you disconnect, turn back up to the iCloud back on. It took me awhile to stumble across that solution.

I actually realized it was a solution after I went through what I did. Unfortunately, it is really inelegant. I'd prefer to have a nightly iCloud backup (which I do) and then have my phone sync to my computer whenever I plug it in. I feel like there are a handful of added steps here that are unnecessary. Frankly, there are a couple of ways iOS does this; I am thinking toggling things like bluetooth, wifi, etc. although that is for another thread! :)

I still use cables for transferring since it's faster and doesn't waste battery energy.

IMO, the next generation of iOS devices should have connectors for USB and TB (TB would make for very fast syncing).

I still sync and backup to my Mac with USB. Don't need my files in the cloud and it's easier to plugin to sync than hope the wifi works (which it sometimes doesn't)

Guess I'm still an old school holdout.

The iPhone can't keep up with the speeds that USB can provide, so Thunderbolt or any other technology would simply be wasted on the iPhone.

That and very few people have compatible hardware.

The demise of Firewire should show that Apple isn't going down that route again.

USB3 might be a good option - great backwards compatibility.

I switch off between the computer and wireless backups. There's been a couple of times that I restored my phone, and when I do that, I find it's much faster to sync the majority of my music through the computer, then will use iTunes match if I only need to download a few songs, but it's faster if I have a whole bunch to sync, just to use the computer. Plus, if I restore it through the computer and choose the most recent backup, I can get back all of my system settings and app settings (like my folderS). I don't know if restoring from iCloud lets me do that or not.

I still do to sync videos from my iPhone to iPhoto. photos are all done via photostream straight into iPhoto.

I really hope there'll be an easier way to keep photo albums in sync across all devices soon… I use events exclusively in iPhoto, so I would like to be able to create events on my iPhone and automatically sync the libraries on my iPad and iPhoto.

Agreed! I want an iCloud solution to sync events.

Cable only. Wifi sync to Windows 7 doesn't work well. I also manually copy my photos and videos to the PC because PhotoStream (photos) also doesn't work well to Windows 7. Not just me, lots of threads on it. :(

Curious, how many still use a wire to sync with a compute?

If you're an old school holdout, what keeps you tethered?

I haven't connected to a computer since movies became a previous purchased download on iOS.

If I'm restoring/wiping my iPhone then I'll use the cord because wifi syncing songs takes forever.

But if I'm just downloading a couple songs or if I'm doing my daily sync I'll use wifi only. Of course most of the time when I'm doing this I'm charging my phone anyways so my cord is already being used.
