I've been using my only 50mm lens with my D90 when I got it when it was first released. lol I do however rent lenses for gigs. I started doing that because I couldn't decide on which to purchase. Before shooting with my D90 I owned a sweet SLR for years which is why I want to go FX. If I got a D7100 it would feel like a newer camera but I really wouldn't have anything that would excite me. The 51 AF points I saw the advantages of using that on a D300. So for years I forced myself to use just the D90 and 50mm until I was ready to move to my next body. I don't like to do any stitching. I want to capture what I see.

I know the price of the D750 will drop (eventually). If someone is buying their first Nikon, they have lots to chose from. My reasoning for going to the D750 is the same as when I bought my D90. Size and pro-like features. I can easily shoot with the D810 but I like carrying a slightly smaller body.

The D90 with a 50mm 1.8 is a great combo. I use it a lot. I've also come to love the 35mm DX lens with the D90. At first I felt it overexposed a lot compared to the 50mm but once I got used to it and realized how to adjust I love it. I too have come to feel that I'm ready for more than the D7100 brings. It's a nice camera and I like the feel and build of it but I want more low light performance. Stitching does have it's advantages. It lets you get some wider shots from a closer position which can create some interesting perspectives. The widest lens I have at the moment is the 18-300 and it's not at it's best below 35 (maybe even 50). Maybe one day I'll get a true wide angle but nothing below 14mm or 16mm probably.

Before you guys go for the D750 you might want to consider the ligh leak/reflection issue that is now surfacing:

Looks like it's a free D760 a year from now. ;)

Ugh. OK, I guess I'll watch this one for a while. Good thing I have time. I'm sure it will go the route of most of these new device, new problem issues. Maybe some denial at first. Some extremely emotional internet arguments from both sides of the mine's broke / mine's fine camps and then hopefully a resolution.

I started about 5 years ago with not being a first adopter of new tech.

Tbh the last thing Nikon need right now is another quality issue. D600gate was not that long ago. There financial results of late have not been great. In the UK at least they are putting a big pre Christmas advertising campaign on.

I'm not looking to upgrade before March at the earliest, so plenty of time for this to get sorted for me. Just hope Nikon handle it better than thier last issue for their sake.

The D90 when it came out and still is a great camera, I spent some time looking at your zenfolio stuff, there are some great mountain/landscape and general all round shots in there, going FF is going to help you a lot, back in my Nikon days I had a D90 as a back up to a D300, great combo, I changed to Canon because I wanted FF and the lenses Canon offered for my travel and landscape work, and I have no regrets but miss the little old D90 it holds a place in my heart as a great little workhorse, your right to side step the D7100, the D90 can still give it a run for its money, going FF from a D90 in terms of image IQ you will notice a huge difference especially for your mountain/landscape type photography basically in all the type of stuff you shoot, just get a prime lens in the 24-35mm range and your good to go, if Nikon had a lens catalogue like Canons maybe I would still be shooting Nikon on FF, keep up the good work in zenfolio I look forward to checking your work once your shooting FF ;)

Thanks a lot for the encouraging words. It means a lot to hear you're making progress. The D90 is staying in the gear inventory for sure. It will be a good backup and probably be my primary climbing camera until I get the guts to take $3k+ worth of gear climbing. That probably won't take long. The D90 has been a workhorse since it came out the box with no issues at all to date. I can only hope I'm so lucky on my next purchase.

I tested the D750 a tiny bit against my D610 and I actually wanted to write about it on here, but never had the time to. The D750 is essentially the same camera as the D610, except for the AF. Here are some other differences I noticed, that can also be found in various reviews online:

  • the text in the viewfinder is white on the D750
  • the grip is deeper and more comfortable to my hands (I am 6'3 with large hands) The (clueless) storeclerk I took the camera from complained about the new grip. He prefered the D610s.
  • in-camera high iso seems marginally improved
[*]the D750 feels flimsy compared to the D610. A friend of mine commented on the D610 feeling much more rugged. I personally liked the feel of the D750
  • the one-push histogramm that I use on my D610 didn't work on the D750. I couldn't adjust it in the menu either and the clerk, again was clueless
  • the viewfinder on the D750 seemed clearer. This is probably due to my D610 viewfinder being horribly filthy
  • they changed the location of the iso button and not in a good way. I like it more on the D610
  • The tilty screen feels sturdy, but the screen protector is missing. I would not use a 2k dslr without a screenprotector. (The one on my D610 looks like I just came back from a warzone)
  • Overall I really liked the feel and features of the D750. If the extra features are worth 700€ is a truly tough call.

Flimsy? Because of the weight? The D610 has a plastic front whereas the D750 is supposed to be carbon fiber. Light, but sturdy.

I went Black Friday shopping and ordered the D750 kit and the 70-200 f/2.8 VR II since Nikon was doing Black Friday deals and offering $400 off the 70-200 with purchase of a camera. I’m going to sell the 24-120 that comes in the kit. My 5D MKII and Canon gear are all on e-bay and going for sale on some other sites. The 5D MKIII is not worth is for the extra $1,000 at two years old when the Nikon performs as well and offers better DR. Canon’s incremental improvements haven’t shown any innovation or value in their products and the thing I’ll miss most is the lenses. Otherwise, I’ve jumped ship and will have a D750 Tuesday. My first paid shoot is the next day. I’m going probably still have to use my Canon for that one though. :D

It's a not a wide spread issue and some of the people claiming a light leak are shooting in a way that would cause issues with any camera.

If it feels "pro" shouldn't make a difference anyway, but since a lot of folks want that I thought it was worth mentioning. Some youtube reviewers noticed it, too.
The D750 is of course lighter and thinner. The D610 is heavier and feels more sturdy and compact. Both are weather sealed. Nothing rational about this :)

I agree that this might be a non-issue. Still worth mentioning.

ditto on the "flimsy" reference. I wouldn't call any of these DSLR flimsy because its nothing wrong with a plastic body. I've shot with my D50 and D90 in the rain. Plastic repells water

A good insurance policy, and your climbing, I take my camera's everywhere, rain or shine, mountains or beach, your camera is just a tool to be used, and used hard, once your insured and know its covered then you will soon be climbing :D

I had a Minolta Dimage 7 back in the day. I took a lot of pics with it. It's all plastic of course but on one trip in the Alps the body cracked. I'm positive it was because of the wide temperature swings above 12k feet (freeze/thaw cycle). Because of that I wanted the D300 but went for the savings with the D90. The D90 has been exposed to more abuse but it has not failed like the Minolta. Modern plastics are much more advanced, I assume.

BTW, you can pick up a gently used D300s for under $500.

I got my D300 for a lot less than that! Cost me about the same as a camera bag. Less than 5000 shutter count.

They usually run sales around the holidays. I got my first Nikon around the holidays. I did see that they have a sweet lens bundle deal. If you get a new body you can get some of the fast glass for $300 less. Paring the D750 with a 24-70mm looks real sweet right now. So mad that my pockets are empty.

$400 off the 70-200 f/2.8 VRII. That's what I did. :D

There are some good deals and it's tempting. I saw the sales on the Nikon site and it sure is tempting to pull the trigger. Is there a medical term for upgrade anxiety? Now there is this....

http://nikonrumors.com/2014/12/12/new-nikon-d5500-dslr-camera-with-touch-screen-coming-in-early-2015.aspx/

I'm not interested in the D5500 but the article alludes that the D7100 replacement may be here by Feb. A top end DX that borrowed the AF of the D750 and had better ISO capability would be pretty tempting.

Honestly, I'm tired of hearing myself talk about it. It would be a relief to just make a decision and move on.

Would it still be considered GAS? Gear Acquisition Syndrome? :D

Probably picking up one of these today or tomorrow (body only). $500 off is a good deal.

I getting real close to getting the D610 or D750. I am leaning towards the D750 but is it really worth the extra $800. My photography nowadays is casual but I have always appreciated pro features in a camera. I had a F3 for 15 years and was one of the best investments I ever made. I be upgrading from a D90 and shoot landscapes in early mornings and twilight. Will I be happy with the D610 and the extra cash in my pocket? Thoughts are welcome.

You will be happy with either as an upgrade from the D90. I've had my D90 since it came out. I've used the D610 and now own a D750. I went with the D750 because it handles low light action a lot better than the D610. For early morning / late evening landscapes I don't think you could go wrong with either. The D750 focuses better in low light but that won't matter much for your landscapes. It does have less noise at higher ISO than the D610 and images seem to be "recoverable" to a greater degree which might be of interest to you. The D750 is a little lighter. Is worth another $800? It was to me. The D610 is a great camera. For my needs the D750 is better. Just make sure you budget for the glass to go with it.

For your stated purpose the D750 brings no advantages.
I fact the D610 should perform better, because it has less noise at base ISO.
