Great computer, with a cosmetic damaged edge out of the box.

Exchange? Not bother?

For this price range, I'd expect Apple to do proper QC.

I know many wouldn't care. Since I plan to use this machine for many years, an exchange takes about two weeks, but yes, the waste of resources, the carbon footprint, the tiny detail...

My M4 MBP arrives tomorrow, and I wouldn't return it for something like that. But we're all different in what bothers us, so if it does bother you (especially factoring in the price of MBPs) and will going forward, I would return it.

Its nothing major and personally I would just keep it, but if it bothers you, then yes return it. Otherwise it will keep bothering you until you get used to it.......

There is enough crud and flakes around the keys and on the metal to indicate this laptop has had some use. Whether that mark was there from the beginning, out of the box, is unknown or you just got around to taking a picture. With the amount of residue on the machine Apple may claim user damage. If you are within the 14 day return you are probably OK. Outside those boundaries, you can try but I would not expect much success. If that is the case, just try to ignore the problem.

I would not hesitate a microsecond before returning it. With the price of these machines they have to begin their lives with me in perfect condition. If I screw them up that's on me, but I'm not starting out with someone else's screw-up, be it Apple or UPS.

Not even 24 hours in use. How can you damage the machine at this edge? Would not have seen that ever. Dust is a reality of every macro photo.

I reckon that's from the soft cloth trying to wipe the eye catcher off.

Return it immediately..!!

Apple or others will point out this same when you try to do a trade-in and will try to lower the estimated value.

Also if for some reason there is some issue with the machine even when in warranty. They might refuse by telling that you dropped something which caused the malfunction instead of a manufacturing defect and the proof is this micro dent. It will be on you to prove that it isn't.

The only problem is that you could be returning one problem and getting back another. I returned my 2015 iMac Pro because it had a scratch OTB on the left side. I could only see it when I moved my head to the left. I ended up having it replaced and got back one of the dreaded pink screen tint iMacs, that had pink tint around the edges of the screen.

At the time Apple would not accept an exchange for that issue, and my original iMac had perfect screen uniformity around the edges and I basically kicked myself everyday for returning it.

I have lived by the mantra ever since, that unless it is something major or affects the performance of the device I just leave it be. As others have said it will likely develop more scratches and dings over time.

I don't believe in perfection, and I don't think the costs are that exorbitant to demand it. And honestly I am trying to figure out what the 'damage' actually is. Damage to me is something that is obvious and typically interferes with the expected function. When I look at the pics I see... not sure what, a .. ? well whatever it is, it is less that a mm, it seems to be only cosmetic and its not in a place I would typically be looking at. My eyes are on the screen and my hands block my viewpoint of that area. No I wouldn't even think of returning it.

But thats me. You gotta do you. Apple gives you the right to return no questions asked for the first two weeks so I dont think you need to ask us what you should do. You already know it's just cosmetic at most.

Those pictures does not look anything like "out of the box". What is all that stuff between the keys? Dandruff? Or did you open the box in an operating sawmill facility?

If this is how your brand new computer already looks there is no reason at all for you to return anything. Because in a couple of days the replacement is going to look worn and all dirty anyway.

By the way, are you sure that scuff really was there when you opened the box? Maybe you were trying to brush away some of that heavy dandruff and you scratched it with a ring, bracelet or watch? Just an idea.

That will in no way affect the performance or stability of the laptop, and it's so small that most people would never notice that to begin with. If you are outside of the return window, Apple won't make an exception for what is clearly a cosmetic issue.

Dandruff! :p

We don't have that here, sir.

As said, must be from the soft cloth trying to wipe that mark off.

Try a macro of your keys, you'll be surprised.

Wouldn't say anything if Apple wouldn't publish those close-up, zoom-in videos of finishing perfection.

This clearly is not finishing perfection. You can do better, Apple.

It’s called marketing…always to be taken with a grain of salt. Which, I guess you did looking at your pictures with white flecks. Plus, if they polished yours up and did a flyby without your arrows, I bet no one would see anything amiss. It’s a tool, not an engagement ring. So did you return it?
