Well I return it for other reasons as well. Apple let me try this baby for two weeks with no questions asked, and I am grateful.

Besides the mark, the good ole MBP M1 still is not too shabby in comparison and will perform for another year or so, who knows, maybe even until the arrival of OLED Pros.

Then the keyboard: The M1's keyboard is tighter, with less spaces between keys and body – in the longer run not such a dust trap.

Furthermore: Somehow, this M4 is not totally "even." When on a hard surface, there's this light rattling sound when working, like if something's loose. If I push down the left corner below the keyboard, everything seems properly aligned.

And: There's a distinct size and weight difference. The older Pro is lighter and thinner.

Overall the M4 is a great laptop offering smooth operation. The older horse still seems smooth enough.

So, initially never planned to just try it and never returned one in the past.

It's a first.

If one is OCD enough to be bothered by that, be sure never to buy anything other than silver. I just bought a Space Black and I know that over the years spots will have the silver color wear through. I bought the Space Black because its clearly an M4 to anyone who knows. I son’t care if in occasional places wear brings out the silver alu-min-ium.

Funnily enough, I'd say there is a distinct difference between normal use/wear-and-tear and then a brand new out-of-the box premium product marketed as pretty much perfect

One thinks of might be a somehow reassembled machine

Same with cars, I'd not accept a brand new car with marks

That's one perspective... another is given that normal wear and tear will ultimately make a machine's appearance 'not perfect' what real impact is a very hard to see scratch now? Pretty much perfect, is not perfect. Though I haven't heard Apple claim even that. You are right they are proud of the effort they put into the appearance, rightfully so, but perfect has to be in the eyes of the beholder. And I guarantee if you inspected each inch of a car you would find a lot of imperfections.

This could go on ad nauseam

Point is, I never intended to give back the machine and never did when I ordered an Apple product before

Not even a question, return return return. If I am paying 4k for a laptop it better be so perfect that a microscope won't see imperfections.

Great computer, with a cosmetic damaged edge out of the box.

Exchange? Not bother?

For this price range, I'd expect Apple to do proper QC.

I know many wouldn't care. Since I plan to use this machine for many years, an exchange takes about two weeks, but yes, the waste of resources, the carbon footprint, the tiny detail...
Return and replace. The simple fact that you are asking about it tells that you are bothered by the defect.

I am using Apple products for a long time now..and I never had a "perfect" unit in my life: Be it Mac or iPad or iPhone. Every unit had one or two small imperfections. And believe me: I inspected all of them with magnifier and flashlight. There is no such thing as perfection in man made things.

Aye.

Now, if (for ex.) the screen is blemished, or the keyboard won't work . . . that's an entirely different ballpark!

Your Mac is now unique. There's nothing worse than a perfect condition mac because they all look the same. Yours will stand out.

A magnifier! Not aiming to go there…
