I feel like the thread title will be every iPad Pro XDR buyer when they see the M1X based 14” MacBook Pro Vs. the M1 iPad XDR Pro they just bought.

Is anyone on team iPad Pro who prefers the iPad and iPadOS over MacOS ?

I feel like the M1X MacBook Pro 14” will have a similar MiniLED display. And for a fair price You could’ve bought if you waited a MacBook Pro M1X.

I feel like waiting is the move. What’s the cost delta ?

13” M1 MacBook Pro 512GB 8GB RAM = $1499
12.9” M1 XDR iPad Pro 512GB 8GB RAM = $1399 (plus Keyboard +$300) = $1699

14” M1X XDR Macbook Pro 512GB 8GB RAM = $1799 (my guess) +$200 for 16GB RAM

What do you guys think ? Personally I need to wait and see that M1X MacBook Pro.

Didnt the xdr make the ipad thicker? Id imagine the first few gens of mbp wont have it until they release a gen 3 mini led thin enough to fit the macbook screen. Of course they could end up just making the lid thicker. Who knows.

You could wait until the end of time, for something better in the NEXT version.

It won't get you anything NOW though.

If your delta is based on measuring the iPad against a MacBook, it's already faulty. Base your delta on comparing MacBooks to MacBooks. One's figuring on whether to buy an iPad should be based on what one could realistically do with an iPad. As it's been said over & over everyone's case use is different. What you need may require a MacBook, while for others the iPad is the best tool.

If I wanted a MacBook, I'd just buy a MacBook.

I have the M1 MBA and it's been collecting dust while I use older and less performant 2017 iPad Pros and Air 3. If I need to use a desktop OS, I'm more comfortable using one of the Windows desktops and laptops at my disposal.

If you are getting the new iPad mainly for the screen, that tells you that you really don't need the new iPad and are just chasing new tech.

Take a look at your actual needs for today, not 2 years in the ever-changing tech future. Can you rightfully perform your needs on a day to day basis with an IPad or a Mac? If you say yes to both, look at ports on the Mac and determine how often you will truly need them. If you don't need them, the iPad comes back into view. How mobile do you need to be on a day to day basis? How comfortable are you typing with an iPad? Can the current state of iPadOS meet your daily workflow needs? If not, you should wait to see what happens in June.

M1 is already the X version of the Apple Silicon, it was originally the A14X. So there is no M1X.
Apple played a master level marketing job here. First they put the iPad SoC in Macs, due to Intel chips sucked so much, the M1 Macs won universal acclaims.
And then they put back the M1 (i.e. iPad SoC) into the iPad and now we are all happy that we have a ‘Mac’ chip inside.
Really great job Apple! Haha.

Indeed, the M1 is simply the A14X iPad chip.

The iPad Pro is better for regular usage (e-mail, facebook, internet) because of the touch screen.

The MacBook Pro is better for productivity, mainly due to software.

For me, the M2X 16” MacBook Pro is prefered over the M1 iPad Pro, because software on iPad Pro sucks too much for me. I will get one of the cheaper iPad Pro models, because I cannot do much with it anyway.

Prefer the iPad over any MacBook. My needs are simple. iPads are my main device but I only do surfing, email, photos and a very little gaming. much prefer chilling on the sofa with the 12.9

I don’t see the problem, if you want a MacBook buy a MacBook. If you think you want an iPad now you can always change your mind when the 14” MBP comes if you want that, just sell the iPad and buy the MBP.

If your use case involve any video editing etc. I think the M1 MacBook Air still wins by a large margin - and cheaper.

Two different tools for different purposes. Depending on what you do, you may need both or just one. I prefer to read and draw on my iPad over my Mac. And I prefer to work in apps like Affinity, Keynote, and Sketch on my Mac. So in my case, I use both.

I had MBP 15" for a long time and aside from Aperture (later iPhotos) I didn't use any of the other "Pro" apps Apple was offering. Now when everything is on iCloud and rarely use my Sony Alpha I don't need to manage photos on Mac anymore. Figured I will only use the apps I already do on my desktop PC and iPhone, so the deciding between Macbook and iPad has been much easier for me.

iPad will replace both my Asus Ultrabook (which suffers from unpredictably glitchy flickering screen and is hard to depend on) and Galaxy Tab S5e (with already outdated Android version and AMOLED screen, suffering from all its display tech staple features such as jello scrolling/black smearing/dirty screen effects).
Both of these devices only provide me nothing but frustration. My iPhone 8 experience, on the other hand is completely stress free. Gimme more of that, please.

Both have different use cases not the same for me.

my M1 air is there for work and when i want a desktop feel and iPad Pro for everything else. I don’t tend to touch my MacBook Air at home as i just use the iPad Pro with MK.

I prefer my iPad to my MBP, for sure. For portability, ease of use, touchscreen, etc I use my iPad daily and my MBP sometimes.

The Magic Keyboard case really makes my MBP redundant to me.

iPadOS is limited relative to macOS for sure, but for my needs iPadOS is functional and fun to use.

I’m not one of those who says that iPads can serve as laptop replacements for everyone, but it has been great for me. I doubt I’ll buy another MB.

I have no doubt you, I mean many here are chasing tech. :p I would rather chase a great single lady and charm her than chase tech. :D I admit I am odd that way. lol

SOMEONE is gonna electron microscope this theory on YouTube and I feel you are right, where the A14 and M1 are identical except for maybe extra L1 and L3 Cache which is what AMD does to beat Intel just triples the Cache.

Also I’d love to see a funny SNL style sketch based on the meeting at Apple to put the A14X in MacBooks and MacBook Pros, and renamed it the M1, everyone loves it. And then all the iPad buyers love it cuz it’s NOT an A14X iPhone CPU it’s an M1 Mac CPU now in an iPad. All the while it’s just a beefed up Relabeled A14.

I run a Macbook + iPad Pro setup at home. My current machines are an early 2020 Intel MacBook Air + 2018 iPad Pro. So I had a number of things I could have upgraded or not.

1) I bought an M1 Macbook Air that is arriving this week. I love the form factor of the current MacBook Air and don’t think I will need a 14” MacBook Pro that will be a bit heavier and start at $1,999 or whatever. MacBook Air M1 with 16GB RAM will be great for several years

2) I also bought an iPad Pro 2021 with 8GB RAM. The upgrade in screen and RAM will be nice. Truth be told though it is more of a luxury purchase at this point.

Both machines will be able to power an external display, I should have enough storage between the two machines, iCloud, DropBox and iPhone, etc.

Congrats on the M1 arriving this week. I really like the tapered design of the Air which makes typing so much nicer than on a MBP, although the difference is subtle and may not be a quibble with everyone.

M1 + iPad Pro is a great setup. I like using the iPad Pro in Sidecar mode a lot.

Agree. They made the iPad half a millimetre thicker and the same would work there.

I’ve been using my 2018 iPad Pro 12.9” (2018) for my daily driver since iPadOS updated to include trackpad support, and for work travel a year before that, even though it was pretty clunky for work use with having to go back and forth between keyboard and screen touches.

I’m sure I’ll want to buy a 14” or 16” M1X MBP or even the potential iMac Pro update, because they’re likely going to be some fantastic improvements from the current line, but I’ve gotten so into the ease of using the iPad Pro for all my work and non-work computing, that it’s hard to see going back to a proper laptop or desktop form factor. The only thing I can see doing is adding a 24”-30” monitor for my work desk use (with the 2021 iPad Pro driving it), assuming that iPadOS will improve upon the multi-tasking that today is just sort of usable.

Ive been trying to decide on what devices to use and I am thinking of a similar setup. I do not see myself getting another macbook after my m1 air. It was my first mac and honestly I just do not see the hype and would rather use Windows.

I bought it for long battery life on the go but find myself preferring the ipad for on the go use.

So I am thinking of going back to desktop windows and mobile ipad once my air gets old.
