I think I just witnessed the fastest DVD rip in history. I just ripped 'Miss Potter' to put on my girlfriends iPod using Mac The Ripper.

It took 2 mins 43 secs to rip a 6.14GB protected DVD.

Done on a new iMac 20" 2.4Ghz.

Discuss.

EDIT: This is a stock 20" 2.4Ghz with 1GB Ram which was also running iTunes and Safari at the same time.

That is mighty quick, what super drives do they use in the new iMac, should tell you in system profiler under ATA. For example my old iMac has the "MATSHITADVD-R UJ-85J" and it takes about 30 minutes to do that (although i think there is something shonky with it as it makes very loud noises quite often).

Also you are using the latest (unreleased) Universal version compared to the older version I have which the general reports are that it is a lot quicker at the ripping process.

That's why :

1- The drive in the iMac is a slim drive, so performance will be no where as good as a fw or USB 2.0 external proper 5.25" drive.

2- Here's the biggest "ouch" :
6.14GB = 6'140MB
2 minutes and 43 seconds = 60+60+43 seconds = 163 seconds.

6140/163 : approx. 37,6 MB/s. Blue ray drives aside, no optical drive (to my knowledge) is capable of such transfer rates. With my 16X DVD-R drive, I usually top out at 20 MB/s.

But still, I'm sure the iMac is frigging fast.

So i also just ripped 24 Season 1, Disc 1 just for comparison sake and guess what? 3 Mins, 34 Secs? A 6.94GB Disc! WOW!

This is the latest Universal version, but I was also using this on the previous generation Intel iMac at my average rip times were about 20-25 mins.

The Superdrive is a MATSHITADVD-R UJ-85J.

During your next rip, could you open Activity Monitor and check out "Disk Activity" ?

How much are you compressing these videos?

If you notice, the OP mentioned they were being ripped to an iPod.

Would have thought compressing to iPod size vids would increase the time a lot! Mine was a straight rip, 7.49gb to 7.49gb.

I just fired up Handbrake to rip and encode to iPod and it estimates 2h:24m

straight conversion, that is a massive flyer!!! thats insane! i wonder if the new MTR has some kind of new ripping way, saves some to ram or something first. meh i donno.

with my MBP it takes me about 35mins. i think thats cauz the CPU's always undeer load though.

With MTR it is just a straight rip no converting, if he was converting it would be hell of a lot longer than 3 minutes.

MTR 2.66 is free MTR 3 is still in (somewhat) private beta and to gain access to it you have to contribute, so it would probably be considered to be illegal.

No, they are being ripped for an iPod.

I did mention the size of the files the DVD's were ripping to. I posted screenshots actually. With MTR, you can only rip a DVD one way. This is not conversion to h.264, just simple ripping of DVD.

I think you have your programs mixed up.

Ran my same Der Untergang test with MTR3r13, 30 mins 55 secs, shaved off 1 sec!

Me thinks the OP must have the 1.44 floppy disk version of Miss Potter....

I'm using mac the ripper for the matrix just to test (7.38gb). comp in my sig is what im using. It is gonna take at least 1/2 hour. The activity monitor pic is there, that was a few minutes into the process.

I have a feeling that the OP is not ripping the whole DVD, just part of it.

That would explain why it is so fast.
