Dark mode - what DON'T I get?

Every single time a new update, or even beta, of iOS is released people complain when it becomes clear there is no "dark mode" included.

Why? What am I missing?

For me, it's not a game changer, it's not on my Wishlist, it's just something I would never, ever use. I've had every iPhone since the 3GS launch day and have never once found myself in a situation when I've thought "I need dark mode right now".

Obviously it's always nice to have anything as an option even if you never use it, so of course I wouldn't complain if it WAS a feature - but why are people so desperate for it? People act as if Apple isn't including a Phone app or something.

So tell me - what is the big deal?

What is there not to understand? Darker interfaces lend themselves for dark surroundings and they tend to promote the content a bit better, particularly visual content. Apple used to recommend dark interfaces for media apps because of this. iPhones in particular are used throughout the day, why does it have to be so bright at every hour of the day?

I really like apps such as Netflix and Apple’s Trailers app. I find them very pleasant to use purely because of this.

The part you might find confusing is how that will interact with current apps that follow Apples current design continuity. Because what good is a dark mode if 95% of what you do isn't affected by it. Short answer is it won't, one app will be dark and another won't. This is surprisingly important, a stark contrast can naturally deter people. This is why app designs match the OS design with certain exceptions like mentioned above.

What could be done (I'm just rattling off ideas) is something implemented into the SDK that has a universal dark mode, so apps that offer it are all activated at a certain time or with a button or something.

If the next iPhone uses OLED (and it functions like current OLEDs being more power efficient when black aka off) then Apple will likely implement something. And devs will likely follow suit.

However currently black looks bad on LCD's since it highlights its major short coming of not being able to display it. Plus its contrary to Apples current design philosophy, and its just pretty ugly if not done extremely well. Think of Android with white text on a black background. Some people won't care it will make others cringe.

Still the case, at least for pro stuff. It's the reason why apps like FCPX, Motion, Compressor, Quick Time, and so forth are still dark interfaces. And why if you remove the UI in Photos, it becomes a dark background. It makes the eyes more capable of discerning colour.

Actually, that is exactly what Android was from Android 4.x up until 5.x and later. Android was dark by default. Now Android's UI is white as all heck, but I don't really mind it. Though, once I switch to iPhone 7 Plus on the 18th, it will be nice to get a dark mode in iOS 11 at least.

Well, I'm using iPhone since iPhone 4 and there wasn't a need for dark mode in iOS because it wasn't that bright with white backgrounds everywhere. Since iOS 7 it's very hard to look at, especially in the night. So they should either redesign it or add dark mode.

I'm with you. I have a dark wallpaper but other than that I really don't get all the fuss about "dark mode". Looking at the "light" apps such as Calendar isn't what I would call blinding, seems perfectly ok to me.

I don't get it either. Brightness adjustment from the Control Centre works fine for me if I'm wanting a dim screen.

You'll probably find that outside of a small subset of users the rest of the world isn't that bothered either. I'm like you, if it's there fine but otherwise no great loss.
