Actually, that is exactly what Android was from Android 4.x up until 5.x and later. Android was dark by default. Now Android's UI is white as all heck, but I don't really mind it. Though, once I switch to iPhone 7 Plus on the 18th, it will be nice to get a dark mode in iOS 11 at least.
More likely than not, dark mode will only be available for the OLED phone. This is because OLED does better battery wise with darker interfaces and IPS does better with lighter interfaces.

I highly doubt Apple would be THAT idiotic as to make a dark mode exclusive to the OLED phone. That would be ridiculously stupid, and Apple would receive an absolute crap ton of backlash.

On the contrary. They release it for IPS display iPhones and everyone's battery life drops. Bigger issue. Its actually been mentioned around here dozens of times by many people that it will probably only be an OLED feature, hence the reason why iOS 10 never got it.

Its not about being idiotic, its about selling devices. It would be very smart of Apple to do this. Apple couldn't care less about backlash, they will still sell more devices than they can make.

No it won't be smart of Apple to do that. It would be ridiculously stupid to limit a feature to ONE DEVICE. Let dark mode at least be an option on at least the 7 and 6s lines too. Because they can perfectly be supported, and I doubt battery life would be impacted much, if at all.

It is well known that IPS uses less power with lighter displays, because it displays light colors by turning off lights. OLED displays use less power when displaying dark colors, because it turns off the lights to display black.

It would not be stupid to limit the feature to the new phone only. Look at Apple's track record. They always limit one feature to the newest generation device. There was no reason why the iPhone 4 or iPad 2 could not support Siri. The iPad Mini had the same exact hardware as the iPad 2, yet it got Siri.

This is very Apple. We have literally no idea if the 6s/7 can support dark mode. We have no idea how its being implemented, and I will stand the ground that its OLED only.

To be fair the iPhone 4 didn't have the noise cancelling microphones the 4s has.

Apple limiting a dark mode to one device would be horrible. Most people don't care about slightly increased or decreased battery life. They just want colors that are easier on the eyes or a different color scheme they might prefer. And if battery really is an issue you can always turn it off.

And the iPad 2? Same exact hardware as the iPad Mini except for the screen size. Apple is no stranger of introducing new features for only one iOS device. I'm not sure why this is so shocking. This is very Apple-ish. We will find out in September, but I am still standing my ground on this. Otherwise we would have seen it in iOS 10, when tvOS got a dark mode.

I don't know if the iPad 2 and iPad mini mics were any different. The iPad mini didn't have Siri at launch either though, it was added in an update. They used Siri to try and push people to buy the latest iPhone. I'm not sure dark mode is big enough for that or if it would just end up angering customers.

If iOS 11 has a dark mode (that works on current devices) then we'll probably be seeing it in just under a month. If not it could go either way, there might not even be one. Honestly if they're doing it I want 3rd party support, not just the OS itself, and I'd rather developers be able to work with it over the beta period. If its unveiled in September, an 11.x update, or limited to the latest devices it'll be more of a struggle for everyone.

Mini had Siri from the start. Siri came with iOS 6 on the iPad 3, 4, and Mini. There were many people that ran iOS 6 beta that was pleased to know that Siri was now on the iPad. Being the company they are, Apple always wants people to upgrade, so as a new product, they gave the Mini the same love as the iPod, iPhone and bigger brother iPad 4, even though it was no different from the iPad 2 in specs.

Noctis for dark mode CC, NC and widgets; and Eclipse 4 for app dark mode (they work together) paired with horseshoe which unifies the CC to only one page.
Oh, I get it, Noctis, like the Final Fantasy XV character because he is all in black (or as Honest Trailers called him, "Dark Cloud") :p Thanks man!

That makes sense, strange if they updated other things like the camera but not the mic if it was really a problem.

I still don't know if dark mode is big enough. In iOS 10 they gave rich notifications to devices that don't even have 3D Touch. Apple doesn't restrict all new features.

The iPad 2 and iPad Mini are literally the same device. That's why I was extremely irritated my iPad 2 didn't get Siri.

The processor is the same but according to this page: http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Apple-iPad-mini,Apple-iPad-2-Wi-Fi/phones/7523,5264 they updated the speaker, cameras, wifi, Bluetooth, switched from 30-pin to Lightning and gave the screen an oleophobic coating. Says nothing about the microphone though, they may or may not have changed it. It would make sense since Siri already existed when it was released, maybe with the new camera in mind?

Apple:

  • Introduces Dark mode on Mac OS "to help you focus on your work".
  • Introduces Night Shift on iOS to to reduce stress on your eyes at night.
  • Introduces Dark mode on Apple TV for..well..no one wants to look at a blaring white screen when in between movies/TV shows.
So what purpose does Dark mode suite on iOS? It doesn't fit any of the use cases above. I'd have a hard time believing that Apple would devote resources to this for a "cool" factor. Unless they really are going to make it an OLED only model "feature".

The Space Black Apple watch for example., was the only model that did not come with a Sports band so if you wanted it you had to pay $1000.00 for it because it was packaged with a link bracelet.

macOS doesn't even have a 'dark mode', its merely called "dark menu bar and dock".

Whatever it's called they focused on it during the keynote briefly.
Yeah, my point was, there is only one device with true "dark mode" and thats tvOS. Thats another reason why I have never really believe dark mode is coming to iOS.

If they do introduce dark mode in iOS 11, they need to at least make it a control center toggle, and give it to the older models for the sake of nighttime use, or the movie theater. Night shift and Eclipse 4/Noctis at night is sooo easy on the eyes.
