As a long time Dark Sky user, it's a little sad to get this notification. Knew it was coming when it was acquired by Apple, but still ... Most recently in addition to my mobile devices, I've had the iOS version on my Mac too. I know the functionality, or at least some of it, will be integrated into the Apple Weather app. Long live Dark Sky!

Dark Sky has the better UI, more alerts & features, and has been more dependable. Although Dark Sky forecast info seems to have gotten worse in 2022, it’s rain alerts best Weather’s. Weather looks pretty and modern, but that’s not enough.

Under the hood, Weather is constantly checking your location, while Dark Sky only does so a handful of times, in a day. You can check this in App Tracking Transparency reports...

I have to say for my location Dark Sky hourly predictions were almost always spot on. I'm outdoors often and it was so helpful on those possible shower days.

My experimece has been good, but declined a bit this year, I’d say. For example in the past 2 months the app tells me rain excepted but it’s mostly clear. Or the opposite: mostly cloudy all morning but it’s raining steadily.

That said, the stupid Weather app location got stuck on a weekend road trip. Kept showing my “current location“ at a town I drove through, some 50 miles away. Force quit an reboot didnt help. Eventually I just deleted Weather.…

This upsets me, but I will deal with it I guess.

My biggest concern is I am now using Apple weather app and Dark Sky, and it seems like Dark Sky is in line with all the "big weather apps" and the apple weather app is almost 5 degrees higher?

First how is this the case? I thought Apple weather app used same data as Dark Sky?

Wow - Dark sky has THE BEST user interface of any weather app, and Apple had to 'fix' it. Like Maps, they screwed up heir weather app too. I love Dark Sky, but looked at the Apple Weather, hopefully - how sad - and they honestly think they can SELL that turd for $9.99 a month in an ecosystem of MANY free apps that look better and did not assassinate a beloved friend that was Dark Sky?! UGH - what an unimaginative solution from Apple. Hateful.

I saw this in the app today and it bums me out. Certainly my go to weather app. Guess I’m heading to apple weather. Too many ads on other apps.

What the best alternative to Dark Sky app that is a one time fee ?

No matter how much it is the one time fee.

Do not want subscription unless I have to :(
Does Apple really think a lot of people will pay $9.99 a month for this turd?? Talk about out of touch

I haven't seen any news about Apple Weather in Ventura being a subscription. Can someone provide a link to that info?

No, because it is not true. (FUD) Subscriptions are to the API for weather data (formerly Dark Sky API). You would pay that as a developer or as an individual using the API, not the Weather app.

<sigh> For now, Apple Weather. I gave up on most other apps because of their privacy (or lack of) policies. However, I tried Hello Weather, which is free, but has a subscription level for more data and Watch app. Wasn't impressed enough to keep it though. Also tried Open Weather (nice, free, no alerts), Weather Strip (nice, but not enough even w/subsc), and Carrot (many subscription levels). I will probably try Open Weather again too. Hello was good too, but even with subscription, not better than Dark Sky.)

I don't know where the $9.99 is coming from either. Developers themselves aren't paying for the API calls until they get to 500,000. The pricing seems like they are steering them away from making general weather apps and more into intergrations for like automation and scheduling apps.

Apple weather is $9.99 month? Where did I miss that? I don't see a charge any where.

I use Dark Sky on both my iPhone and iPad mini. If they are discontinuing it, the least they could do is add the Weather app on iPads.

Other weather apps. that I use are Wunderground and AccuWeather.
