Hi,

First Mac ever, only 3 days old. Have a very small dead pixel and have been reading in the forum that several people have had sucess in massaging a pixel back to life...I would like to know how exactly to go about this....Please let me know what has been sucessful for you in the past.

Thank you very much,

Aaron

Yeah seriously, don't muck around trying to get it to work, just get a new one before you run outta time!

Cheers

Does Apple replace things with just a single dead pixel?

In case you don't go that route- is it really dead, or just stuck? Dead pixels will appear black, whereas stuck pixels will be a certain color all the time. Dead pixels are generally unrepairable AFAIK, whereas stuck pixels can sometimes come back

Well if they don't, just take it back, say you want your money back, they can't refuse within 10-14days, and then go in the next day and buy a new one, simple

Cheers

Hmmm, its a bit of a sticky situation, maybe you could just plead your case with Apple then...

I know its no comparison, but I've got 2 v. small dead pixels on my PSP, you learn to ignore them really, unless they're really obvious...

Cheers

Smack it against a table and complain your MBP comes dented out of the box (oh and it also has a dead pixel), the 2 day delay might work against you though.

Actually as a matter of fact, I do have a stuck pixel on my MacBook Pro (it's red and is about 1.5" from the bottom of the screen.
When I first discovered it, it drove me absolutely crazy because I'd find myself constantly looking at it.

However, I now mostly use it with the Apple Bluetooth keyboard and hooked up to a Dell 24" display for a secondary screen, so I sit far enough back and am looking at 2 screens back and forth enough to where I had actually forgotten about it for a while... now it's back to haunt me since you brought it up :(

:p

this is EXACTLY where i have it. about 1.5 inches left of the macbook pro symbol (above the hinge) and 1.5 inches high. its annoying, and they wouldn't replace it. i also have dust in 3 places. annoying.

they won't replace it, but once its a year old i'm pretty sure there'll be enough dust that they'll have to replace it.

A dead pixel is a lot easier to live with than a stuck pixel. I've been lucky. 23" Cinema HD and a MacBook. The Cinema HD is perfect and the MacBook has one dead pixel at the very bottom under the Dock. It looks like a very small grey dot. Can't even see it unless you look for it. If I had a stuck green or red pixel staring at me though, I'd be figuring out how to take it back - actually, that's why I buy my Apple stuff at CompUSA

I don't know, a dead pixel would still be extremely irritating. The red one isn't *quite* as noticable as you might expect it to be. And while the main time it's visible is when I have a window over it that has a white background (which is actually pretty often, such as right now), it often ends up sitting over text, images, etc as well, which makes it blend in a little.
And like I said, when I'm sitting back from it typing away and looking higher up on the screen, I luckily never notice it.

One thing that worries me is when I end up getting 2 more 24" Dell displays... I've got a 2005FPW and a 2407WFP and neither have any dead or stuck pixels, and I *hope* that will remain true with my other 2 future screens. (I'm going to have three 24" displays on my Intel-based PowerMac when they come out and I order one in a few months  ... just have to stuff another video card in there)

I have one on my MacBook Pro, I learned to live with just like I learned to live with the slight whine no biggie, only problem is the intrnal mc picks up the whine but I barely use that mic. Don't worry about it, mine bothered me for a little while and then I got used to it.

That is a very cool widget, but I can't see how exactly it works, just by making the screen change colour very quickly?

Cheere

as the name "stuck pixel" implies, the pixel is stuck on a single color. by constantly making the "guns" fire new colors, something like this can generally jump start it and get it functioning again after a while. sometimes it can take hours

Thanks all

Thank you for the advice. I am currently trying the dead pixel widget, it is interesting to say the least.

Thanks!

you could try changing your desktop picture (darker) to make the dead pixel less obvious...btw, stuck pixels SUCK way more than dead ones. I had like 4 stuck red pixels on my DS, but only one dead one on my PSP.

You do realise that generally means "in most cases" which means your sentence should of read "Generally these colour changing apps don't do anything."?

Since we're making trivial corrections, "realise" means to "convert into cash." I believe the term you were looking for is "realize." Also, it's "should have," not "should of."

But you're right, in most cases they don't do anything... however I have personally seen them unstick pixels in more cases than one.
