Hi all,

On 3 February I purchased an iPad Air 4 to replace my old iPad 6th generation. It’s been performing beautifully until yesterday when I spotted two dead pixels in the middle of the screen.

I didn’t purchase the iPad directly from Apple, but rather from a UK retailer called John Lewis. The iPad came with two years’ warranty, but John Lewis states on its warranty webpage that it doesn’t cover dead pixels under the warranty.

I know Apple requires for there to be at least three dead pixels on an iPad before they’ll repair/exchange. Am I SOL here? Paid full price for this thing and for there to be dead pixels visible already is disappointing. This is the 4th iPad I’ve owned and I’ve never had the issue before.

I've heard nothing but bad things about John Lewis. I will always buy directly from Apple.

Make an appointment with the Apple Store and tell them you have dead pixels on the iPad. Hopefully, they will make an exception for you about the 2 pixels.

Have made an appointment for this coming Friday at my local Apple store. Hopefully they'll just exchange it, they're pretty good in my local store.

Will I get a refurb replacement or a new iPad, do you think?

You will get a white box refurb, unless the store is out of them. If that happens, you may get a new one.
Not happy with a refurb. I bought this thing brand new a little over a month ago, I'm not accepting a refurb as an alternative for a defective product.

Unfortunately that’s how it is. When you are replacing it under warranty, it is a warranty replacement and they just replace you in a white box. Was the dead pixel not there when you first got the device?

Never seen a dead pixel in all my Apple years. Used to see on CTR screens all the time. I guess I’ve been lucky. Didn’t know it was a thing.

I did have the white dot on the Gen 3. It came out of the back in a plain box, but all sealed like it was new.

I don’t think you’ll have a choice you was pass there 14 day return policy

I had a long run of bad luck with dead pixels back in around 2010/2011. My iPhone 4, iPad 2, and iPad 3 "with retina!" all had dead pixels out of the box and had to be replaced. After the iPad 3, I never had that issue with an Apple device again. I haven't seen a dead pixel on ANY of my devices, Apple or non-Apple, in a very long time. I wonder if the screen tech in general has just gotten so much better since then that it's not much of a problem anymore.

Not a big fan of refurbs myself, but if they'd offer one I'd accept it considering the circumstances. Under their dead pixel rules, as you mentioned, they're really not obligated to do anything here.

Never buy apple care plus for my iPads, waste of money.

I have the high-end 12.9" and pay AppleCare+ a low monthly amount for it. It covers my accessories expensive magic keyboard and the pencil. For me it's worth it for the express replacements, peace-of-mind, and not having to get into arguments about whether damage or faults were the result of an accident.

I've actually used the AppleCare+ on my iPads twice, but never on iPhones where it costs more. :D

My iPad never leaves the house, so it's not worth it for me.

It might’ve been there but I only spotted it a couple of weeks ago.

I‘ve never had this issue before on an iPad (hell, on any Apple device!) and I’ve owned 4. I’m not one to actively look for defects but these dead pixels really stand out and I’m not happy paying £550 for a one month old device that’s defective.

Had a call from Apple yesterday, they’ve ordered me a new device in to my local store as they don’t have the inventory. They’ll call me when it’s ready and I’ll be able to swap out my defective iPad.

Just got back swapping my defective iPad for a new one. They gave me a brand new retail unit, no refurb for me

Are you sure they just don’t cover dead pixels after 1 year?

Have you ever noticed any backlight bleed with the iPad Air? Some people say they see it when in a dark room, there are black bars on the side of screen (like watching YouTube video) and the brightness is up a bit.
