If El Cap without SIP is identical to Yosemite security-wise, why bother to implement SIP in the first place?

Because El Capitan removes the ability to mess with some key components of the OS. Before, clueless user Joe could inadvertently move/remove/delete/edit things that should not be touched. Now with SIP, he can't. Before, Joe could install some obscure "utility" that would in fact make more bad than good, now he can't. BUT, longtime and experienced users know what they're doing, as you do, I assume. So SIP is not that important to a user like you, or me for instance.

Apple put the copy-paste icon feature into get-info on purpose, years ago. That makes it a feature, not a hack, even if some people never figured out how to use it. Now they've taken that feature away. Technically, that's called "dumbing down the System". We've an Apple sanctioned way around that dumbing down, it's a PITA, but it's documented right there at Apple, so it's not a hack.

Sounds like a long lasting bug they've finally fixed.

Modifying icons for system apps shouldn't be allowed as you've a general expectation that those app icons are consistent across machines. Otherwise you get a situation where you can thoroughly confuse a user and prevent them from getting on Facebook.

Try that with Apple apps, such as Safari or TextEdit. It does not work anymore for me. For non-Apple apps, yes. For any default Apple apps, no. Please try it and tell me if it works for you to change Safari or TextEdit.
I just clicked the app and did 'Get Info' and dragged the png overtop of the old one. Worked no problem.

I'm beginning to believe you are trolling. What is there not to understand? You're being difficult for no reason. Turn it off if it bothers you and enjoy the same freedoms you had while running El Capitan. Fancy icon changes have no priority for Apple and if SIP prevents any changes to default applications, so be it.
