My iPhone 5 crashes or freezes all. the. time. To be fair, it is an iPhone 5 running iOS 10. It's remarkable that I'm still getting OS updates.

iOS 6 was rock solid on this thing. iOS 7 was very bad. iOS 8 was a little better. iOS 9 was pretty stable unless my memory fails me. But iOS 10 just sent it over the edge unfortunately. :( I can't speak for Android, though I'm happy to read how stable Android is from the other posters as I'm switching to Android soon.

The early versions of iOS 7 and 8 and perhaps even 9 weren't all that stable and had their share of issues, but the latter versions (and basically the final versions) of iOS 7, 8, and 9 were fairly good.

You're probably right. It's just when I read the name "iOS 7" my brain immediately remembers the first few months of iOS 7 and I can't get past it. Apple did iron out some issues, but on the whole I feel iOS 8 and 9 were more refined.

Hate to put on the rose-tinted glasses, but I'm serious--iOS 6 was the best stable operating system I've used even to this day.

If Apple ever implements a Theme Store, I would love to switch to a iOS6 or below theme.

I actually liked skeuromoph-whatever! That's what made iPhones and Macs special! They didn't feel like dead computational devices.

There's a heated debate about whether Android or iOS crashes less that deserves its own thread.

Best way to settle is to prove it by posting a screenshot of your device's ...

Settings - Privacy - Diagnostic

;-)

It is quite amazing how android can be so stable althought you can customize it as much as you want. Apps crash the same or less than in ios in the same time.

Games seems to crash quite often (air2) :/ but hard to say was it the game or the device causing it.

When I was using Android it crashed so much on me. One day apps crashed the second day Google services crashed third day OS crashed and I had to factory reset everything. On iPhone I hardly faced such issues only once or twice my Facebook app crashed but I guess it was the fault of app I was using or background apps.

I mostly use Android now, but I also have more app crashes on android then I had on iPhone. But nothing too major to make me use only iOS again. I think that both platforms are stabile enough that deciding which is more stable is of no significance :)

If your last Android experience was from 2010 or prior then a lot has changed since Gingerbread 2.3. Badly written apps on any platform are unavoidable but the OS should be sandboxed so it doesn't crash like on iOS as frequent as 3 times in 1 hour. That's why no one has volunteered to post a screenshot of iOS uptime.

On Android it's a non-issue even on sub $50 devices let alone premium devices. Approaching half a year uptime. Also, battery % remaining is predictable since even at 6% it'll consistently make to the next morning with 24/7 VOIP, five email accounts, Reddit/YouTube/Google Now notifications, etc. without issue so no implosion and shutting down at 40% like on iOS with background refresh disabled.

There really is no iOS uptime metric(save for an app which I'm not downloading). And posting a link to a forum where out of tens of millions some may be having issues doesn't answer the question if there really is one to be asked.

You can find forum complaint posts about any product. Any phone, any car, any camera, any operating system, any toaster. So?

I've never had an iPhone crash or freeze. Ever. Since 2010. Apps, yes occasionally, but never the phone itself.

I don't think either OS really crashes these days, but apps might or might not be a different story.

I was on Android 4.0 that time and it mostly crashed on me and battery timings weren't so great. But I heard Android 4.0 isn't good for battery timings. Battery on VOIP didn't work pretty well. That might be a good experience for you but I have a frequent use of device even today. When I moved to iPhone 4s and onwards, I never had such an issue except memory eating apps.

With no allegiance either way, here's my experience:

iPad Pro (jailbroken 9.3.3) - occasional random reset. Probably because of the JB.

iPhone 6s (10.x.x) - rock steady. Don't recall any crashes.

Galaxy S6 edge (6.0.1) - rock steady. Don't recall any crashes.

Pixel XL (7.1.1) - far too frequently (once/twice a week) will an app FC. Could be Google's own or third party.

I've owned: 4, 4s, 5s, 6s+ (current). Skipped the 5.
Didnt have any freezes with my iPhone 6 but got some annoying ones on my 7 Plus. When I got the phone at some very rare intervals the phone would freeze but the touch screen stopped responding. The power button was working but since the touch screen wasnt working I couldnt turn it off and it resolved itself after 5 minutes or so.Havent experienced any more since 10.1

iPhone 6+ - sporadic crashes of apps and OS. Suspect it was the device and lackarAM.
iPhone 6S+ - Haven't had an OS flat out crash ... I think. Apps? Yes. The crashes ... once in a while I will wake my device up in the morning and it displays and behaves as if the device had been through a reboot. Saw this with the 6+ also. Not sure what the issue or cause really is.
Note 5 - No OS crashes since receiving the device. If I discover a problem app, I replace it. I have turned off all the AT&T apps and majority of the Samsung apps. Device is running mostly Google apps ... except for stylus support.

Crashes on both iOS and Android are so infrequent right now that it doesn't matter which happens more. It's more of an app issue. I have a couple of very old games that haven't been updated in years. They now constantly crash. It's more of an app issue than anything. Sometimes, an app update is unstable and crashes, but then a new update fixes it.
