I had no problem with Face ID but because of my concerns with using it (no need to get into that discussion here) I turned it off and use a 4 digit passcode. After raising to wake and swiping up which is necessary for both, I find it just as fast to enter the passcode as waiting for Face ID to open the phone.
Mine takes just as long. Isn’t that sad they have Touch ID that was prety much unlocked by the time you took it out your pocket. Now they have Face ID and they call it an upgrade when it reality it was a major downgrade.

I have to decide today IF I want to make the leap to the X. I have the iPhone 8 (non plus) and today it's day 14 with AT&T.

I like the 8 well enough but the X keeps causing me to reconsider. I do dig the larger screen in what's basically the same sized phone but my concern is the lack of the home button and touchID. I am not sure if I'd like faceID. My phone sits flat on a desk for half the day. With touchID on the 8 I just tap and go to unlock and can then use the phone without ever picking it up.

With the X I do not think this is possible and the phone will need to be picked up to unlock it every single time. Considering I unlock it numerous times a day this is a concern. But, I also think this is where Apple is going and that the iPhone 8 will be the last iPhone with a home button. Getting the X now could get me use to it going forward so if I upgrade to the 9 (or whatever) later this year I'd already be adjusted to gestures and the lack of touchID.

I am seriously conflicted and go back and forth daily on the decision.

I really wish Apple would go the route of Android and allow trusted places and devices. For instance if it knows it's connected to a Mac, give me the option to turn off faceID. Or if I am connected to a trusted network give the option to turn off faceID ect. Connected to an Apple Watch? Same. Trusted places works great on Android and I don't know why Apple did not include something similar.

Anyways, today is the day. Anyone using an X that perviously used an iPhone in the same manner as I do? If so your thoughts are appreciated.

Yes, the phone has to be picked up off the desk to unlock. I have to do it at work a lot. I do however have a wireless charging stand that if it's in it, which holds it at a angle that works for it to unlock for me when I tap the screen and then slide it up without me picking up the phone. It does irritate me sometimes that FaceID doesn't work a lot while in bed, but it works most of the time elsewhere.

Can a software update help FaceiD work while in bed? Or in different situations? Or would this be hardware issue that cannot be changed in current X?

The sensors/camera have to be able read your face to authenticate, it's partly due to the position and how your face is altered when you're laying down that can be problematic. It also uses a machine learning process, where it continues to Learn your face by entering your passcode when it fails.

I can only speak to my experience, but over time, FaceID has started to work for me laying in bed. It has even learned to recognize my 'just woke up with one eye blindly gazing at the screen' look. You just have to enter the passcode when it fails. That has been successful for me, at least.

As much as I like my iPhone X, you are totally right. In no way FaceID is an upgrade over TouchID when it comes to unlocking the device.... and unlocking is maybe the most used action of an iPhone.

With FaceID you must ''work'' for the iPhone, where TouchID is ''working'' for you.
What I am trying to say is that you will always need to adapt to the FaceID of the iPhone, not really with TouchID (minus wet fingers ofcourse, then it could be a struggle sometimes, but TouchID on my iPhone 7 was most of the times still working fine with sweaty/not-to-wet fingers)

Yeah I also see where people say well with Touch ID you can’t unlock the phone with wet fingers or gloves. But there point is invalid imo because you can’t even use the phone after you unlock with gloves or wet fingers. With either Face ID or Touch ID. I’m just not a fan of Face ID.

Wrong, the phone does not “have”to be picked up off the desk.
When I’m sitting on my sofa watching tv with my X flat on the table in front of the sofa all I have to do is lean over slightly so I can reach the phone and FaceID unlocks for me.
I have no problems with FaceID at all. Some do and a rescan has been suggested for them.
Mine works so well at times it seems it isn’t actually locked.
Works while I’m still in bed. Works day or night, bright or dark, with my contacts, without my contacts, with glasses and without, with sunglasses and without.
It simply works for me.

Ha you must have a rare device then, cause all the rest of us can’t get it to work when laying down or when the phone is on the table.

I’m not the only one. If you look a few post above this to Itsjustcole, you’ll see he said: “

LOL! Love it when people come in here that have no clue. Sorry man, unless the camera is facing you, it will not unlock. Ask anyone else that owns one here, like someone already replied, it must be facing you. Sitting on the desk flat, it will not unlock. I deal with it daily.

These damn people. I hate fanboys and that’s exactly what most of these guys are on here. When Apple fails at something they find excuses and say there’s works no matter what. Apple could come out with a brick with an Apple on it and these fanboys would buy it. Face ID blows. And is definitely a failure.

I am no fanboy and have been accused of being anti apple by numerous posters here on the forum.

faceID works for me. If in your mind my telling the truth makes me a fanboy then so be it I suppose. Trust me if it didn't work my X would go back in a second and without a 2nd thought.

Now I do agree that it does not work while flat on a desk. Yup thats' correct-a-mundo.

Speaking of someone with no clue. I stated how mine works and it works flawless for me. If you read my post about it being flat on the table you’ll note that I said I have to lean over (to reach the phone and tap it to wake), but the fact is that my phone does not have to be directly in front of my face to work. It will work for me at even a pretty acute angle, maybe because it was at an angle when I set it up.
I had a 7 Plus (which was my first iPhone) since July (2017) until December when i bought the X and sold the 7 Plus. FaceID, for me, works much better than TouchID did on the 7 Plus and also FaceID works better for me than TouchID does on the 6S which now I also have.
And brandonjr36, I am not a fanboy by any stretch, even a iPhone hater since the original iPhone until I got the 7 Plus. So maybe lay off the caffeine for a while and take a chill pill dude. You guys simply feed my need to come here rather than watching Saturday Night Live. LOL.

I agree with this. I can do the same with mine. It unlocks if I lean over or if I slightly raise it or a combo of both.

This place is odd.. Say something bad about Apple and you are a hater (which I've been dubbed more than once - LOL) but then say something positive or in this case, tell the truth about faceID working and you are dubbed a koolaid drinking fanboy. Meh, its the internet I suppose..

I am now officially, according to past and recent forum posts, a koolaid drinking fanboy who hates Apple... Haha

Just consider the source. He has been throwing a tantrum for a while.

Wasn’t talking about you bro. I was saying most people on this site. Your not the only person that has mentioned Face ID.

Prove it. Because it is a fact it can not work while laying flat on a desk with you unlocking it without you picking it up. Post up a video of someone showing you doing it. The phone doesn't work at an angle either, it has to be facing you directly most of the time except maybe a ever so slight angle.

Maybe I’ll take a little video in a while showing mine working like I said, flat on my table in front of the sofa, bent over just slightly so I can reach the phone.

It is not “a fact” that it can not work laying flat on a desk with you unlocking it without picking it up. And it will work at around a 45 degree angle if setup as shon above.

Damn man I want your phone if you can unlock it on the table. I can’t even get mine to unlock looking at my Face most of the time.

You have special problems that don't affect most of us. I still think your setup was done incorrectly or your phone has a hardware issue. If you took it to the Apple store you could get the hardware checked. Yeah, I know about the drive to Tulsa. Heck, take the girlfriend and a picnic basket for a nice afternoon drive.

I just went ahead and turned it off. Now I don’t have to deal with it. Might still take the gf somewhere for valentines tho lol. That and my birthday coming up.

Wow, with it turned off how does the affect things like logging into banking apps., prefilling web passwords in safari, etc.?

It didn’t do any of that when it was activated. Had to put my username and password in for my banking app every time. And other passwords had them manually put them in.

What a strange X you have. FID authenticates me on all of my banking apps, apple pay and unlocks the keychain to prefill the user and password on the websites that require it.
