That’s all that matters at the end of the day, whether or not you enjoy the product. I know you were hesitant to upgrade from the 6S due to pricing and lack of an enticing upgrade at the price points. But good that you got a phone you can enjoy. It’s all subjective and choice is good.
I really wanted the XR to be good enough as my upgrade and I waited for the launch before upgrading to see what it offered. Unfortunately for me the XR had too many compromises and the bits that are better than the 8+ were just not enough to compensate for me.

I never really wanted a huge phone but this upgrade I wanted something different to my 6S so figured I had to go bigger to get a bigger jump in features. The telephoto lens, 1080p screen, and keeping 3DTouch was a must. Those three features alone were more important than the look of the phone or how I unlock it. You’re right it’s all about choice and I know for me I made the right choice. I would have bought the 8+ even if both iPhones were the same price to be honest.

Pre-order time is upon us! Which is better? Assume both 64 GB storage models. To me, here are the pro's for each:

iPhone 8 Plus
  • 1080p Display
  • Higer DPI (401 vs 326)
  • Touch ID
  • 3D Touch (I do actually use for some apps)
  • Dual Rear Cameras
  • $50 less ($699 vs $749)
iPhone XR
  • Narrower form so easier to 1-handed text
  • 1.5 hour longer battery life
  • Faster Processor
  • Better camera capabilities
  • Slightly lighter weight

Between those two iPhone XR I’d say easily.

I'm going to make this easy for those that can't seem to grasp that this isn't a 720p screen :)

720p = 921,600 pixels
Xr = 1,483,776 pixels
8+ = 2,073,600 pixels

I can't imagine that 1.5 million pixels is going to look bad on a 6.1 inch screen.

Yes. The display will indeed be inferior on the Xr vs the 8+. Pretty easy decision

iPhone 8 Plus is a no brainer as it has a better screen and camera.

I don’t think you can say that the 8+ has a better camera. It’s not a simple answer. The 8+ has a telephoto camera and the XR doesn’t. That’s clearly an advantage. However, if you compare the main (wide angle) cameras on the two phones, the XR’s is obviously superior. Much larger sensor, plus the Smart HDR features (which are made possible by the A12 processor).

The 8+ will do a better job with any photo requiring zoom, and also portrait mode shots (which you can still do on the XR, but they’re put together via software and generally won’t look as good). But the XR should beat the pants off the 8+ in other scenarios, particularly those with sub-optimal lighting. That’s where Smart HDR shines.

Another person stuck on specs... Display is lower resolution that doesn't make it inferior. The one lens Camera in and of itself has been reviewed to actually be better. It will stills support portrait mode thru software, but is absent the telephoto lens. The good news is most buy the XR aren't stuck on specs alone, but the actual user experience.

Well, both are Apple phones with some of the best quality LCDs on the market. Therefore, with all things being equal I’ll take the higher res display any day of the week.

I Just can’t fathom how people who spend more money for a inferior screen resolution as well as a inferior camera

There you have it, so there really is no point coming in a thread knocking the XR, you picked the one you preferred! Making generalities about this model being inferior is just silly because everyone has different needs, preferences and most don't care about specs. They just buy and happily use their phones.

Of course you don't, because your are blinded by specs only, you can't see the trees for the forest!

XR is better in every category that matters to me, so I pre-ordered one.

Some people think more expensive = better. Those people can't be helped.

Yup specs are meaningless. You must be a very well educated consumer. Smh

Curious why you believe the XR’s camera is inferior. Check out my post above, from about an hour ago. I explained my thoughts on the cameras. Would you mind sharing your thoughts? I’d honestly like to hear them.

You can actually make a case that the single lens camera on the XR is better because it doesn’t ‘mix’ image data between the two lenses. Also, the improvement in HDR.

But the screen is the most important part of the phone (since modern smartphones are pretty much all screen) so why would you pay more for a lower res screen? Does not compute...

Because pixel density isn't everything. Different customers have different priorities. That's pretty clear from reading this thread.

Different strokes for different folks.

Why would anyone pay hundreds more for higher resolution...on a tiny screen. It's insane. It's hilarious that when only Samsung was offering high resolution screens, they didn't matter, but now all of a sudden they do. And on those high resolution screen phones, Samsung shipped them at lower resolution because putting them at max destroyed battery life. You claim the screen is the most important part, but good luck using that screen if the battery dies. And oddly enough no one that has used the XR so far has commented that the screen is bad. In fact the opposite has been stated.

Unless the user is one of those that has deluded themselves into thinking that they can see the difference between 1.5 and 2 million pixels on a 6 inch screen, I think they'd prefer the Xr.;)

It seems Apple agrees with you on screen over the iPhone actually making/receiving calls and texts.

I am going to be critical of the PPI on the XR but in all honesty I am using an IPP 10.5 right now and the text looks fine. I have some tolerance for slightly lower resolution versus a screen that turns three different colors (not a joke.. my wife has the X) from in-hand to reading on a table/surface.

Lolz .... upgrading ... lmaooooo

Upgrade from OLED to LCD ? Lolz

Yes , it has faster chip but you will know there are nothing different much ...

Camera , doesnt matter how good camera is , the important thing you will see the pic with LCD screen . Lolz

It's not 60" tv we are talking about here. I know LCD is less superior to OLED but not sure how big of a difference on a 6" screen, even though it has less PPI, it's not something our naked eyes can notice per Phil interview earlier today.

I will be getting the iPhone from Hong Kong this time when i am gong back later, because of the actual dual sim functionality, it will come in handy when i am travelling.
