The coating is a gimmick.
I haven't noticed any difference in it's ability to repel fingerprints any better than my 1st gen iPhone's screen.

I find the oleophobic screen much easier to keep clean. With a wipe of my t-shirt, it's clean and umsmeared.

I am still not convinced that you didn't some how cause this to happen (though not intentially). The wear on your screen extends outside of the normal center area.

Either you cleaned it with something that reacted with the coating, or you have something in your pocket that caused the damage.

The fact that you have no pictures of the damage as it progressed is also suspect. I would have chronicaled the wear.

Regardless, there have only been 2 reports (that I have seen) of this damage since July so this is not a systemic problem (and I am not referring to scratching).

I couldn't really care less about convincing YOU, but just for the hell of it, I thought I'd provide you with a little more detail on one of my original photos. Maybe you will have an "Ohhhhh" moment. See below.

And, if you look at post #41, you will find this:
I did not use any cleaning products on the screen. I am not an idiot.
The wear isn't around the edges. The wear is in the middle, in the clean area. That is the area where the coating is missing.

Again, for the sake of repetition, I will repeat yet again: I did not clean the screen with anything besides a microfiber cloth or my t shirt. I NEVER had anything else in my pocket when my iPhone was in there.

I wasn't aware that I was required by anyone to take pictures of my iPhone to chronicle the damage. I just decided to take photos before I exchanged it at the Apple Store for the sake of providing more detail to my thread.

The genesis of it is as follows:
The first time I noticed it (4 or 6 weeks ago? Not really sure), it was about 6 mm in length and 2 mm in height. It seemed to stay that size for a while. The next thing I knew, I was dealing with a larger area of wear the size of a quarter. The soonest I could get to the Apple Store was yesterday, and you can see for yourself what size it is.

I never said that it was a wide-spread issue. Ever. But we may start seeing more and more reports of this as the next few months go by.

Yeah, you would be out of your mind to say it doesn't have any effect. After being used to wet cleaning my iPod Touch every damn day, and after taking the screen protector off my 3GS it's a godsend. Just the slight rub on my pants pocket taking the phone out results in a squeaky clean screen. Love it.

Looks hazy all over the front of the phone. Even the black areas. Perhaps its the lighting but that just looks odd.

^^^^ Some people just can't let things go, eh anjinhamarota?
You're right, it does look normal (except for the worn-away area of course).

Yes, that is because, as I mentioned before (you really should try reading earlier posts), I ran my finger across the entire glass area of the iPhone, including the black areas to cause the smudging.

I angled my camera so that it would show the smudging and the clear, worn-away area.

Why are you so suspicious of this anyway? What motivation could I possibly have to lie about this here?

Lay off the deep fried chicken if your finger did that to your screen. Lol.

Haha..... but I don't eat fried food. And even if I did, I certainly wouldn't touch my iPhone with greasy hands.

My hands were clean when I did that. Rubbing a clean finger across a piece of glass will still smudge the glass.

The problem is OP skin could be more acidic than the normal population and as such eats away at the covering faster than it should normally. For example my girlfriend has very acidic skin and will pit jewelry very quickly and

We had someone at work like that. Any bare steel he touched on machinery would start to go rusty. He got the sack 12 months ago and now everything that people touch is back to normal. It was certainly something in his skin.

If my iPhone looked like that, I would just use some alcohol or something to remove the rest of the coating. If it's glass underneath then it should be safe.

A replacement phone is likely to be the same in time. This coating was a nice idea, but it's longevity is obviously in question.

So......

I go to the apple store because I had the same thing going on with my screen. But they claim it's just the oils from my fingers.... That cause it to look like that around the screen :/
